Division and Characteristics of Shale Parasequences in the Upper Fourth Member of the Shahejie Formation, Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China

Shale parasequence analysis is an important part of sequence stratigraphy sudies. This paper proposed a systematic research method for analyzing shale parasequences including their delineation, division, characteristics and origins. The division method is established on the basis of lithofacies. Multi-method analysis and mutual verification were implemented by using auxiliary indicators（such as mineral compositions, geochemical indicators and wavelet values）. A typical shale parasequence comprises a lower interval of deepening water-depth and an upper interval of shallowing water-depth（e.g., a shale parasequence including a high-total organic carbon（TOC） shale-low-TOC limy shale）. Abrupt increases in pyrite content, TOC value, relative hydrocarbon generation potential（（S1＋S2）/TOC）, and wavelet values are indicative of parasequence boundaries. The proposed research method was applied to study the upper fourth member of the Shahejie Formation in the Dongying depression, Bohai Bay Basin. Results show that there were seven types of parasequences developed. A singular and a dual structured parasequences were identified. Three factors controlling the development of the shale parasequences were identified including relative lake level change, terrestrial input and transgression. The development of high-TOC（〉2%） shale parasequences was mainly controlled by biological and chemical sedimentation. The low-TOC（〈2%） shale parasequences were mainly deposited by chemical sedimentation. The diversities of shale parasequences were caused by four major controlling factors including climate, relative lake level change, terrestrial input and emergency（e.g., transgression）.

Sedimentary Characterization of the Upper Paleozoic Coal-Bearing Tight Sand Strata, Daniudi Gas Field, Ordos Basin, China

The coal-bearing strata of the Upper Paleozoic（from the Taiyuan Formation to the lower member of the Shanxi Formation） are the most important units that have high gas production in the Daniudi gas field, which is a typical tight-sandstone reservoir with high heterogeneity in the Ordos Basin, China. Based on an integrated investigation of well logs, cores, SEM and 3-D seismic data, we delineated the sedimentary facies of the coal-bearing strata and divided the succession into sequenced stratigraphic units of different depositional systems. A sedimentary hiatus was documented for the first time in the study area and forms the sequence boundary between the Lower Pennsylvanian Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation（Ct1） and the Upper Pennsylvanian Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation（Ct2）. The coal-bearing strata in Ct1 are indicative of a barrier coastal deposition system. Tidal channels are identified by their fine-grained, cross-stratified character. The sands in the tidal channels are well sorted, and the quartz content is above 95%. The coalbed located beside the sandstone is thought to be a lagoon. Gas-bearing, coarse-grained sandstone in the coal-bearing strata spanning from the Ct2 to the lower members of the Shanxi Formation（P1s） is interpreted as a fluvial-dominated braided delta that is divided into four third-order sequences. The coal-bearing strata are composed of sandstone, mudstone and coalbed from base to top in each sequence. Braided-river deposits form the lowstand system tract（LST） within each sequence. A shelf and lake depositional environment containing dark gray mudstone forms the transgressive systems tract（TST）. The highstand systems tract（HST） deposits form the swamp coalbed in each sequence.

Formation Mechanisms of Rudstones and Their Effects on Reservoir Quality in the Shulu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China

Based on observations made on cores and cuttings from several wells in the lowermost part of the third member of the Shahejie Formation, several rock types, specifically clast-supported rudstone, matrix-supported rudstone, mixed-source rudstone, calcisiltite/calcarenite, massive calci- lutite and laminated calcilutite, have been identified in the Shulu sag. According to the sedimentary structures and distribution characteristics of these rocks, the carbonate breccias fall into two cate- gories, based on their origins： one formed by fan-delta channel sedimentation, whereas the other formed by earthquake-induced slump fan deposition. Clast-supported rudstone and matrix- supported rudstone are the main lithologies deposited by braided rivers in the fan delta plain and front, of which the pore space is mainly dissolution pores within gravels and tectonic fissures. Clast- supported rudstone, matrix-supported rudstone and mixed-source rudstone are the main lithologies of the earthquake-induced slump fans. These carbonate breccias developed along with soft-sediment deformation structures, which are interpreted as seismites and are widely distributed in the sag, in which intercrystalline pores, intergranular pores and fissures created from diagenetic shrinkage are developed. The two kinds of rudstones have different reservoir characteristics and oil/gas testing re- suits. The rudstones generated in the fan delta have higher porosity and permeability, as well as bet- ter oil/gas testing results. Thus, they are key targets for petroleum exploration.

Comparative Analysis of Sequence Characteristics among Different Superimposed Stages of the Chelif Basin,Algeria

Superimposed basins were investigated with respect to tectonic evolution, sediment deposition and petroleum characteristics within a single superposition stage generally. The comparative study was seldom seen. Sequence characteristics were compared for two different superimposed stages - an expanding rifting stage and a depression-foreland transition stage - in the Chelif Basin during the Miocene in this paper. A model and mechanism for sequence evolution of superimposed basins in different dynamic situations are discussed with respect to sequence similarities and differences. The compared characters include sequence thickness, sequence boundaries and system tracts, as well as sediment deposition within sequences and sequence development patterns. Finally, some typical features of sequence development concomitant with changes of superimposed stages in the Chelif Basin are discussed.

Characteristics of Milankovitch Cycles in the Mid-Permian Liangshan and Qixia Formations of the Sichuan Basin——Examples from Well-Long17 and Well-Wujia1

The Liangshan and Qixia formations in the Sichuan Basin of central China were formed in the earlier middle Permian. Based on outcrop observation of the Changjianggou section at Shangsi, Guangyuan region and 3 rd -order sequence division in typical drillings, one-dimensional spectrum analysis has been used to choose the better curve between the natural gamma ray spectrometry log（ln （Th/K）） in Well-Long17 and the gamma ray log（GR） in Well-Wujia1, respectively, for identifying Milankovitch cycles in Sequence PSQ1 which comprises the Liangshan and Qixia formations, and then to identify the variation in the Milankovitch cycle sequences. On this basis, the system tract and 4 th -order sequence interfaces in Sequence PSQ1 were found via two-dimensional spectral analysis and digital filtering. Finally, a high-frequency sequence division program was established. Among these cycles, long eccentricity （413.0 ka） and short eccentricity （123.0 ka） are the most unambiguous, and they are separately the major control factors in forming 4 th -order （parasequence sets） and 5 th -order （parasequences） sequences, with the average thicknesses corresponding to the main cycles being 11.47 m and 3.32 m in Well-Long17, and 14.21 m and 3.79 m in Well-Wujia1, respectively. In other words, the deposition rate in the beach subfacies is faster than that of the inner ramp facies. The ln（Th/K） curve is more sensitive than the GR as the index of relatively ancient water depth in carbonate deposition. One-dimensional spectrum analysis of ln（Th/K） curve could distinguish the Milankovitch cycle sequences that arose from the Precession cycle （20.90 ka）, with a much higher credibility. Sequence PSQ1 in Well-Long17 contains 10 4 th -order sequences, and the growth span of Sequence PSQ1 consisting of the Liangshan and Qixia formations is about 4.13 Ma. The Paleozoic Wufeng-Longmaxi shale is one of the main horizons for shale gas exploration in Sichuan Basin. Outcrop, core and thin section observations, X-ray diffraction analysis, trace element geochemistry and other methods have been used to understand the sedimentary characteristics and identify hydrocarbon source rocks in suitable sedimentary paleoenvironments in the Wufeng-Longmaxi shale in northern Guizhou Province. The thickness of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation ranges from 20 to 200 m and it was mainly deposited on a deep-water shelf. The TOC content is high, up to 5.75%. The main non-organic minerals are detrital quartz and clay minerals, with a little plagioclase feldspar, potassium feldspar, calcite, dolomite and pyrite. There is also biogenic microcrystalline quartz. Six lithofacies have been identified： siliceous shale, clay shale, calcareous shale, silty shale, carbonaceous shale, and muddy siltstone. Using biological Ba, V/（V＋Ni）, TOC, V/Cr, B, Sr/Ba and other indicators, we estimate primary productivity, redox conditions and paleosalinity and show that the early stage of Wufeng-Longmaxi deposition occurred under strong anoxic conditions, high paleosalinity and yielded a high TOC content and an excellent potential shale gas source. The anoxic environment was destroyed at the late stages of Wufeng-Longmaxi deposition, the TOC content decreased, so that it is likely to be a high quality source rock. Organic pores acted as the key reservoir space in the shales, and the pores are mainly mesopose, with most pore diameters less than 20 nm. The siliceous shale has high TOC content and brittle mineral（quartz） content making it an important exploration target for shale oil and gas exploration.

The Silurian Longmaxi Shale (SLS) is the target for shale gas exploration and exploitation in the southeastern Sichuan *** on detailed description of cores and outcrops,analysis of Gamma Ray (GR) logs,thin sections and mineralogical data,the SLS can be subdivided into six lithofacies:(1) clayey shale,(2) siliceous calcareous shale,(3) siliceous dolomitic shale,(4) silty-clayey interlaminated shale,(5) muddy siltstone,and (6) graptolite *** facies associations are recognized in the study area,i.e.,inner shelf,outer shelf,and bathyal plain (including turbidite) *** shelf and bathyal plain facies dominate the lower interval of the SLS,while inner shelf facies dominates the upper part of the *** thickness of the black shale in the northern part of the study area is the greatest,where siliceous calcareous shale,siliceous dolomitic shale,and graptolite shale are *** three kinds of shale are rich in total organic carbon (TOC) content and brittle minerals,which is favourable for the accumulation of shale gas and its future exploitation.

Classification of Hydrocarbon-Bearing Fine-Grained Sedimentary Rocks

Fine-grained sedimentary rocks are defined as rocks which mainly compose of fine grains（〈62.5 μm）. The detailed studies on these rocks have revealed the need of a more unified, comprehensive and inclusive classification. The study focuses on fine-grained rocks has turned from the differences of inorganic mineral components to the significance of organic matter and microorganisms. The proposed classification is based on mineral composition, and it is noted that organic matters have been taken as a very important parameter in this classification scheme. Thus, four parameters, the TOC content, silica（quartz plus feldspars）, clay minerals and carbonate minerals, are considered to divide the fine-grained sedimentary rocks into eight categories, and the further classification within every category is refined depending on subordinate mineral composition. The nomenclature consists of a root name preceded by a primary adjective. The root names reflect mineral constituent of the rock, including low organic（TOC〈2%）, middle organic（2%4%） claystone, siliceous mudstone, limestone, and mixed mudstone. Primary adjectives convey structure and organic content information, including massive or limanited. The lithofacies are closely related to the reservoir storage space, porosity, permeability, hydrocarbon potential and shale oil/gas sweet spot, and are the key factor for the shale oil and gas exploration. The classification helps to systematically and practicably describe variability within fine-grained sedimentary rocks, what＇s more, it helps to guide the hydrocarbon exploration.

Sedimentary hydrodynamic study of sand bodies in the upper subsection of the 4th Member of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation in the eastern Dongying Depression, China

Petroleum is produced from a beach-bar sand reservoir in the upper subsection of the 4th member of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation （Es4s） in the eastern Dongying Depression,penetrated by many wells in the Guangli-Qingnan area and this subsection still has further exploration *** drilling and logging data,we analyzed the sand body types,emphasizing the sedimentary characteristics of the beach-bar sand *** these data with the concepts of lacustrine and oceanic hydrodynamics,we explain the formation and distribution of the beach-bar sands in the eastern Dongying *** connectivity between beach-bar sand bodies within each individual hydrodynamic zone is better than that between sand bodies in any two adjacent *** tempestite sand bodies developed in this area are characterized by typical storm deposits and are located at the bottoms of the beachbar sand *** grade upward to normal shore and shallow-lacustrine beaches and *** also propose a new simple method to estimate the paleo-water depth using the thicknesses of the bar sand bodies in parasequences combined with the principle of hydrodynamic *** on the distribution of the beach-bar sands in parasequence set 3,we infer that the paleo-wind direction was from the north with an average paleo-wind force of 6 when the major beach-bar sand bodies formed.
