Chinese,as a logographic language,fundamentally differs from alphabetic languages like English.Previous neuroimaging studies have mainly focused on alphabetic languages,while the exploration of Chinese reading is still an emerging and fast-growing research field.Recently,a growing number of neuroimaging studies have explored the neural circuit of Chinese reading.Here,we summarize previous research on Chinese reading from a connectomic perspective.Converging evidence indicates that the left middle frontal gyrus is a specialized hub region that connects the ventral with dorsal pathways for Chinese reading.Notably,the orthography-to-phonology and orthography-to-semantics mapping,mainly processed in the ventral pathway,are more specific during Chinese reading.Besides,in addition to the left-lateralized language-related regions,reading pathways in the right hemisphere also play an important role in Chinese reading.Throughout,we comprehensively review prior findings and emphasize several challenging issues to be explored in future work.

The digital twin brain(DTB)computing model from brain-inspired computing research is an emerging artificial intelligence technique,which is realized by a computational modeling approach of hardware and software.It can achieve various cognitive abilities and their synergistic mechanisms in a manner similar to the human brain.Given that the task of the DTB is to simulate the functions of the human brain,comparing the similarities and differences between the two is crucial.However,the visualization study of the DTB is still under-researched.Moreover,the complexity of the datasets(multilevel spatiotemporal granularity and different types of comparison tasks)presents new challenges to the analysis and exploration of visualization.Therefore,in this study,we proposed DTBVis,a visual analytics system that supports comparison tasks for the DTB.DTBVis supports iterative explorations from different levels and at different granularities.Combined with automatic similarity recommendation,and high-dimensional exploration,DTBVis can assist experts in understanding the similarities and differences between the DTB and the human brain,thus helping them adjust their model and enhance its functionality.The highest level of DTBVis shows an overview of the datasets from the brain,which is used for comparison and exploration of the function and structure of the DTB and the human brain.The medium level is used for the comparison and exploration of a designated brain region.The low level can analyze a designated brain voxel.We worked closely with experts of brain science and held regular seminars with them.Feedback from the experts indicates that our approach helps them conduct comparative studies of the DTB and human brain and make modeling adjustments of the DTB through intuitive visual comparisons and interactive explorations.

Load balancing mechanism in technologies such as cloud computing has provided a huge opportunity for the development of large-scale projects. Although the conventional view is to build mechanisms that adopt a dynamic load balancing strategy, existing strategies cannot automatically scale platform(network) servers(nodes) to adapt for dynamic requests, but only guarantee load balancing for the pre-deployed nodes, thereby increasing resource consumption and decreasing networks’ efficiency. We contend that existing load balancing mechanisms are inadequate for deploying dynamic applications. In this regard, we first adopt both load balancing and cloud computing virtualization technologies to modularly design a load balancing mechanism that provides a dynamically auto-scalable solution for large-scale and dynamic computing scenarios. Furthermore, we adopt the proof-of-work consensus, for a novel use during the lifecycle of master nodes in case of system failure caused by a failed master node, to demonstrate a fault-tolerant load balancing mechanism. We theoretically evaluate the security requirement of our mechanism and analyze its performance. Experimental results show that the mechanism supports auto-scalability and has a better performance compared to existing mechanisms such as the ordinary cluster.

As the low-cost commercial product, writing inks(pen ink and Chinese ink) have attracted great attention to fabricate electrochemical electrodes for supercapacitors(SCs) and batteries. Due to the conductive nature deriving from graphitic carbon nanoparticles in ink and strong adhesion, ink can be easily coated onto support to enhance the conductivity, form a porous layer facilitating electrolyte ion diffusion, increase the specific surface area and function as binder and dispersant for other active materials. In this review,the beneficial features of pen ink and Chinese ink are summarized and how these features favor the electrochemical performance is discussed in details. And then, ways to coat ink onto support are described,giving a clear understanding of recent process in this area. Finally, the current challenges and outlook of ink-based electrode are discussed, aiming to offer some basic knowledge and promote wide application and future study of pen ink and Chinese ink in electrochemistry.

The International Workshop on Applications of Probability and Statistics to Biology(APSB)was successfully held in Shanghai,China,July 11-13,2019.The workshop was hosted by the Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-inspired Intelligence(ISTBI)at Fudan University,and in honor of the 80th birthday of Prof.Minping Qian of Peking University.Most of the twenty eight speakers were former students or close collaborators of Prof.Qian;and there were over eighty participants from all over China and United States.

Digital twin(DT)framework is introduced in the context of application for power grid online analysis.In the development process of a new power grid real-time online analysis system,an online analysis digital twin(OADT)has been implemented to realize the new online analysis architecture.The OADT approach is presented and its prominent features are discussed.The presentation,discussion,and performance testing are based on a large-scale grid network model(40K+buses),exported directly from the EMS system of an actual power grid.A plan to apply the OADT approach to digitize power grid dispatching rules is also outlined.

Experimental investigation for ultra-precision cutting of nickel based superalloy with the assistance of magnetic field

Nickel based superalloy is an important material because of its excellent properties under high temperatures.However,it is a difficult-to-machine material due to its low thermal conductivity,which can cause undesired localized high temperatures in the processing area.In this study,magnetic field-assisted end face turning experiments of nickel-based superalloy is carried out under the assistance of external magnetic fields of different strengths formed by permanent magnets.The experiment results show that,compared with ordinary machining,the chip morphology is improved,the oscillation of cutting force F_(c),F_(a),and Ffare significantly reduced by 90%,88%,and 78%,and the surface roughness Ra is improved from 23 to 13 nm,the P-V value of the fan-shaped area of the machined surface is reduced,and hardness and ductility are improved after the magnetic field is applied.The experiment results indicate that the application of a magnetic field is an efficient and convenient approach to improve the cutting performance of nickel based superalloy.

Eggshell-loaded CoFe_(2)O_(4) catalyst was synthesized via a convenient hydrothermal method during our work,then the surface morphology and elemental composition of the composites were systematically investigated.Performance of CoFe_(2)O_(4)/eggshell-activated peroxymonosulfate(PMS)system was evaluated by selecting florfenicol(FF)as the model pollutant,and effects of operating parameters and water matrices on the FF removal efficiency in this system were investigated.In addition,main radicals involved in FF degradation were identified by EPR tests and radical quenching experiments,and possible mechanism was proposed.The reduction of toxicity during FF degradation was confirmed,and in combination with HP-LC tests,it was found that dehalogenation and defluorination were effectively carried out during FF degradation.In addition,the prepared CoFe_(2)O_(4)polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)membrane effectively improved the stability of the material and reduced the precipitation of metals.

Imaging genetics is an emerging field aimed at identifying and characterizing genetic variants that influence measures derived from anatomical or functional brain images, which are in turn related to brain-related illnesses or fundamental cognitive, emotional and behavioral processes, and are affected by environmental factors. Here we review the recent evolution of statistical approaches and outstanding challenges in imaging genetics, with a focus on population-based imaging genetic association studies. We show the trend in imaging genetics from candidate approaches to pure discovery science, and from univariate to multivariate analyses. We also discuss future directions and prospects of imaging genetics for ultimately helping understand the genetic and environmental underpinnings of various neuropsychiatric disorders and turning basic science into clinical strategies.
