Field-observation for an anticyclonic mesoscale eddy consisted of twelve gliders and sixty-two expendable probes in the northern South China Sea during summer 2017

An intensive field observation experiment using 12 Chinese gliders equipped with conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensors and 62 expendable CTD probes (XCTDs) was performed to investigate the 3-D structure and time evolution of an anticyclonic eddy in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). The observed results showed that the anticyclonic eddy had a horizontal radius of about 80 km at surface and a vertical depth of impact of more than 1000 m. The largest temperature and salinity anomalies compared with the averaged values of the temperature and salinity profiles were 3.5°C and 0.4 psu at 120 m depth, respectively. Combined analysis of altimeter sea level and water mass properties indicated that the anticyclonic eddy was shed from the Kuroshio loop current. The vertical axis of the anticyclonic eddy tilted from surface to the observed maximum depth (1000 m) along its translation direction against the 2000 m isobath. The center of the anticyclonic eddy remained in the region east of Dongsha Island for more than half a month. During this time, the long axis direction of the eddy changed from across the slope to along the slope. Then, the eddy moved southward along the 2000 m isobaths. Both the geostrophic current and temperature distribution revealed that the eddy intensity weakened during the observation period gradually. These observations indicated strong interaction between the anticyclonic eddy and the slope topography of Dongsha Island.

Upper turbulent mixing in the interior and surrounding areas of an anticyclonic eddy in the northern South China Sea(SCS)was estimated from underwater glider data(May 2015)in the present study,using the Gregg-HenyeyPolzin parameterization and the Thorpe-scale method.The observations revealed a clear asymmetrical spatial pattern of turbulent mixing in the anticyclonic eddy area.Enhanced diffusivity(in the order of 10–3 m2/s)was found at the posterior edge of the anticyclonic mesoscale eddy;on the anterior side,diffusivity was one order of magnitude lower on average.This asymmetrical pattern was highly correlated with the eddy kinetic energy.Higher shear variance on the posterior side,which is conducive to the triggering of shear instability,may be the main mechanism for the elevated diffusivity.In addition,the generation and growth of sub-mesoscale motions that are fed by mesoscale eddies on their posterior side may also promote the occurrence of strong mixing in the studied region.The results of this study help improve our knowledge regarding turbulent mixing in the northern SCS.

SST fronts at the mesoscale eddy edge(ME fronts)were investigated from 2007–2017 in the northern South China Sea(NSCS)based on an automatic method using satellite sea level anomaly(SLA)and SST data.The relative probabilities between the number of anticyclonic/cyclonic ME fronts(AEF/CEF)and the number of anticyclones/cyclones reached 20%.The northeastern and southwestern parts of these anticyclones had more fronts than the northwestern and southeastern parts,although CEFs were nearly equally distributed in all directions.The number of ME fronts had remarkable seasonal variations,while the eddy kinetic energy(EKE)showed no seasonal variations.The total EKE at the ME fronts was three times of that within the MEs,and it was much stronger in AEFs than in CEFs.The interannual variability in the number of ME fronts and EKE had no significant correlation with the El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)index.Possible mechanisms of ME fronts were discussed,but the contributions of mesoscale eddies to SST fronts need to be quantified in future studies.

With increasing global shortage of fresh water resources,many countries are prioritizing desalination as a means of utilizing abundantly available seawater resources.Integrated energy efficiency evaluation is a scientific method for the quantitative analysis of energy efficiency based on multiple indicators and is very useful for investment,construction,and scientific decision-making for desalination projects.In this paper,the energy efficiency evaluation of the micro energy network (MEN) of desalination for multi-source and multi-load is studied,and the basic idea of comprehensive energy efficiency evaluation is analyzed.The process includes the use of a MEN model to establish an integrated energy efficiency evaluation index system,taking into consideration energy,equipment,economic,environmental,and social factors.A combined evaluation method considering subjective and objective comprehensive weights for multi-source multi-load desalination MENs is proposed to evaluate the energy efficiency of desalination and from multiple perspectives.

Response of the upper ocean to tropical cyclone in the Northwest Pacific observed by gliders during fall 2018

The evolution of thermohaline structure at the upper ocean during three tropical cyclones(TCs)in the Northwest Pacific was studied in this study based on successive observation by two new-style underwater gliders during fall 2018.These remote-controllable gliders with CTD sensor enabled us to explore high frequency responses of temperature,salinity,mixed and barrier layers in the upper ocean to severe TCs in this area.Results showed that three significant cooling-to-warming and stratification destructing-to-reconstructing processes at the mixed layer occurred during the lives of three TCs.The maximal cooling of SST all reached≥0.5℃although TCs with different intensities had different minimal distances to the observed area.Under potential impacts of solar radiation,tide and inertial motions,the mixed layer depth possessed significant high-frequency fluctuations during TC periods.In addition,barrier layers appeared and vanished quickly during TCs,accompanied with varied temperature inversion processes.

With the rapid developme nt of the economy, the continu ously in creasing populati on, and ongoing climate change, the shortage of freshwater resources has become an increasingly important global problem. Seawater desalination tech no logy can effectively alleviate the pressure on freshwater supplies and has bee n in vestigated in many countries. However, the majority of existing projects focus on the research and development of desalination equipment and the use of new tech no logies and pay less atte ntion to the operation optimizati on of the desalinati on process. The micro energy n etwork (MEN) designed in this study is an efficient distributed energy supply system that can be used to simultaneously supply electricity, cooling, heating, and freshwater as photovoltaic power, wind power, combined heat and power (CHP), electric cooling and heating, and a seawater desalinati on device are in teg rated into the MEN. In this study, a model for operati on optimization of a MEN for seawater desalination was developed and the influences of the electric cooling and heating ratios and the operation optimization of the seawater desalination device were studied with the aim of minimizing the life cycle cost. Based on the results of this study, MENs can reduce the operation cost of desalination devices and improve the efficiency of renewable energy sources.

在对综合能源系统进行规划和运行决策的过程中,面临设备容量选取和运行策略优化的双重问题。为此以降低成本和碳排放为目标,提出电-热一体化综合能源系统容量与运行双层优化模型,其中容量配置模型采用多目标粒子群算法得到设备容量配置方案,运行调度模型以容量配置模型确定的配置方案作为约束条件,采用混合整数线性规划得到最优运行方案。在得到Pareto前沿解集后,利用基于熵权的优劣解距离法(technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution,TOPSIS)评价方法对方案进行评价。通过某园区综合能源系统进行算例验证,分析了多目标优化和单目标优化所得到的配置方案的不同特点,并通过对容量配置和运行方案的分析证明了模型的合理性和有效性。

This paper conducts comprehensive analysis about operational characteristics, market value, stakeholders, and operating modes of a megacity energy Internet. An innovating 'one platform, two centers, and multiple nodes' operation management model is proposed. The study provides an in-depth explanation of the new operation and management model of the connotation and logical relationship. Building a comprehensive energy service platform, developing an integrated energy dispatch center, a market trading service center, communication, and other parts of the system needed to achieve benefits for all parties is including in the discussion. The proposed new model of operation and management has important guiding significance and reference for the development and construction of energy Internets in megacities.

To analyze the influence of the chord length ratio and angle of attack on lift coefficients and explore the interaction mechanism between the two,we established a calculation model of the pressure distribution coefficient on the airfoil surface and lift coefficient of a dual-wing sail on the basis of the vortex panel method.Computational fluid dynamics was used in auxiliary calculation and analysis.Results revealed a reciprocal interference between the front-wing and rear-wing sails.The total lift coefficient of the dual-sail increased with an increase in the front sail chord length.The lift coefficient of the rear sail decreased with an increase in the front sail chord length or angle of attack.The front sail wake affected the pressure distribution on the upper and lower surfaces of the rear sail leading edge.
