Submarine groundwater discharge enhances primary productivity in the Yellow Sea, China: Insight from the separation of fresh and recirculated components

Submarine groundwater discharge(SGD)is being increasingly recognized as a significant source of nutrient into coastal waters,and generally comprises two components:submarine fresh groundwater discharge(SFGD)and recirculated saline groundwater discharge(RSGD).The separate evaluation of SFGD and RSGD is extremely limited as compared to the conventional estimation of total SGD and associated nutrient fluxes,especially in marginal-scale *** this study,new high-resolution radium isotopes data in seawater and coastal groundwater enabled an estimation of SGD flux in a typical marginal sea of the Yellow *** establishing 226Ra and 228Ra mass balance models,we obtained the SGD-derived radium fluxes,and then estimated the SFGD and RSGD fluxes through a two end-member *** results showed that the total SGD flux into the Yellow Sea was equivalent to approximately 6.6 times the total freshwater discharge of surrounding rivers,and the SFGD flux accounted for only 5.2%–8.8%of the total *** the nutrient concentrations in coastal fresh and saline groundwater,we obtained the dissolved inorganic nutrient fluxes(mmol m^(-2) yr^(-1))to be 52–353 for nitrogen(DIN),0.21–1.4 for phosphorus(DIP),34–226 for silicon(DSi)via SFGD,and 69–262 for DIN,1.0–3.9 for DIP,70–368 for DSi via RSGD,with the sum of nutrient fluxes equaling to(1.8–9.3)-fold,(1.3–5.6)-fold and(2.0–9.5)-fold of the riverine *** to the conventional estimation of the total SGD flux,the nutrient fluxes derived from the separation of SFGD and RSGD were(1.6–2.1),(1.6–1.8)and(4.0–4.9)times lower for DIN,DIP and DSi,respectively,indicating that the estimates by separating SFGD and RSGD could be conservative and representative results of the Yellow ***,we suggested that SGD played an important role in nutrient sources among all the traditional nutrient inputs sources,providing 15%–48%,33%–68%and 14%–43%of the total DIN,DIP and DSi input fluxes into the Yellow Sea,and the high nutrien

Hydrophobic association hydrogels（HA-gels） with high mechanical strength were prepared by free radical micellar copolymerization in aqueous solutions of acrylamide（AM）, anion surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate（SDS） and a small amount of hydrophobic monomer octylphenol polyoxyethylene（7） acrylate（OP-7-AC）. We found that the molar ratio of SDS to OP-7-AC has a great effect on the tensile strength and other mechanical property parameters. The best ratio point R＇ was determined. On the basis of Mooney theory and statistical theory, the critical tensile ratios and critical tensile strengths of the hydrogels were obtained, elastic parameters C1 and C2 were calculated via uniaxial tensile equation and structural parameters, such as the effective network chain density and the averaged molecular weight of the chain between cross-linking points of all the hydrogels were evaluated. The results indicate that the variation of mechanical property parameters depends on the number of effective cross-linking points and the match degree of long and short chains.

Pan-genomics can encompass most of the genetic diversity of a species or population and has proved to be a powerful tool for studying genomic evolution and the origin and domestication of species,and for providing information for plant *** genomics has greatly progressed because of improvements in sequencing technologies and the rapid reduction of sequencing ***,pangenomics still presents many challenges,including computationally intensive assembly methods,high costs with large numbers of samples,ineffective integration of big data,and difficulty in applying it to downstream multi-omics analysis and breeding *** this review,we summarize the definition and recent achievements of plant pan-genomics,computational technologies used for pan-genome construction,and the applications of pan-genomes in plant genomics and molecular *** also discuss challenges and perspectives for future pan-genomics studies and provide a detailed pipeline for sample selection,genome assembly and annotation,structural variation identification,and construction and application of graph-based *** aim is to provide important guidance for plant pan-genome research and a better understanding of the genetic basis of genome evolution,crop domestication,and phenotypic diversity for future studies.

Conversion of cropland into agroforestry land versus naturally-restored grassland alters soil macro-faunal diversity and trophic structure in the semi-arid agro-pasture zone of northern China

Restoration of cropland(termed 'Farm') after abandonment including shrubs(termed 'Shrub'),trees(termed 'Tree') and natural grassland(termed 'Grass') has become a routine process aimed to improve land productivity and control desertification. During this restoration process, soil macro-faunal diversity, and trophic structure were investigated at four types of sites(Farm, Shrub, Tree, and Grass)during growing season in the semi-arid agro-pasture zone of northern China. Results indicated that the Staphylinidae family was found to dominate at the Grass, Shrub, and Tree sites, whiles larval Pyralidae individuals were found at the Grass site only. The density of the omnivores(i.e., Formicidae family) was significantly(P<0.05) greater at the Grass site than at the Tree and Farm sites. The total density and richness of predator and phytophages were found to be markedly(P<0.05) greater at the Grass site than at the Farm site. Meanwhile, we found the taxon richness of predators was significantly(P<0.05) higher at the Shrub site than at the Farm and Tree sites. Compared with the Farm and afforested Shrub/Tree sites,the Grass site had greater density, taxon richness, and Shannon index(P<0.05). In conclusion, natural restoration of abandoned croplands toward grassland was an effective strategy relative to artificial afforestation for improvement of soil biological diversity. Moreover, planting shrub is a preferable measure in abandoned croplands for land development in the semi-arid agro-pasture zone of northern China.

Fenton or photocatalytic degradations of organic contaminants are recognized as promising approaches to address the increasing environmental pollution ***,we develop the effective synergistic catalysis reaction of Fenton and photocatalysis based on a loofah sponge-like Fe_(2)O_(x)/C nanocomposite,which exhibits excellent nitrobenzene photocatalytic degradation *** is noted that Fe2O3 nanoparticles with surface Fe^(2+) species were encapsulated with an ultrathin carbon layer(denoted as Fe_(2)O_(x)/C)via a supramolecular self-sacrificing template and following thermal treatment *** experimental results indicated that the thin layer carbon coating not only inhibited the Fe iron leaching from the Fe_(2)O_(x)but also prompted the separation and transferring of electrons–hole *** introduction of Fe_(2)O_(x)/C enables the Fenton reaction to induce a rapid Fe^(2+)/Fe^(3+)cycle,and meanwhile,together with the photocatalytic reaction to produce continuous active substances for the subsequent degradation catalytic reaction without successive H2O2,resulting in the inexpensive and the effective photocatalytic *** a result,100%nitrobenzene(100 mg/L)was degraded and 97%of the organic carbon was mineralized in 90 min using the Fe_(2)O_(x)/C(0.1 g/L)at a low H_(2)O_(2) dosage(0.50 mM),under air mass(AM)1.5 *** calculations confirmed that the Fe_(2)O_(x)/C-600 with thin carbon layer promoted the dissociation of H2O2 and the·OH *** synergistic catalysis of this work may provide new ideas for low-cost and more efficient treatment of pollutants.

Ozone(O3)is widely used in drinking water disinfection and wastewater ***,when applied to bromide-containing water,ozone induces the formation of bromate,which is *** previous study found±at graphene oxide(GO)can enhance the degradation efficiency of micropollutants during ***,in this study,GO was found to promote bromate formation during ozonation of bromide-containing waters,with bromate yields from the O3/GO process more than twice those obtained using ozone *** promoted bromate formation was attributed to increased hydroxyl radical production,as confirmed by the significant reduction(almost 75%)in bromate yield after adding t-butanol(TBA).Cerium oxide(less tfian 5 mg/L)supported on reduced GO(xCeO2/RGO)significantly inhibited bromate formation during ozonation compared with reduced GO alone,and the optimal Ce atomic percentage(x)was determined to be 0.36%,achieving an inhibition rate of approximately 73%.Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)spectra indicated the transformation of GO into RGO after hydrothermal treatment,and transmission electron microscope(TEM)results showed that CeO2 nanoparticles were well dispersed on the RGO *** X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)spectra results demonstrated that the Ce^3+/Ce^4+ratio in xCeO2/RGO was almost 3-4 times higher than that in pure CeO2,which might be attributed to the charge transfer effect from GO to ***,Ce+on thexCeO2/RGO surface could quench Br-and BrO-to further inhibit bromate ***,0.36CeO2/RGO could also enhance the degradation efficiency of N,N-diethyl-zn-toluamide(DEET)in synthetic and reclaimed water during ozonation.

Submarine groundwater discharge(SGD)plays a major role as a conveyor of metals to coastal ***,the seasonal change of metal fluxes derived through SGD is ***,we evaluated the behaviours and fluxes of trace metals(Mn,Fe,Ba,Pb,U,Cr,Zn,Cu)in an estuary under different seasonal *** behaviours of trace metals revealed that SGD was the source of Mn(3.51 mmol/(m^(2)·d)),Fe(0.174 mmol/(m^(2)·d))and Ba(0.024 mmol/(m^(2)·d)),but the Cu sink(−0.55μmol/(m^(2)·d))and other metals exhibited a seasonal source‒sink *** seasonal variation of dissolved organic matter and the fresh groundwater proportion in subterranean estuaries may have an important effect on metals fluxes especially for the Fe,Mn and *** result shows that the single seasonal metal fluxes estimation applied to the annual scale will cause a large deviation,up to 3.6 times for Fe,5.5 times for Mn,and 15 times for ***,the influence of seasonal fluctuations on SGDderived metal fluxes cannot be ignored,and our findings will be important for comprehending the metal budget and cycle in nearshore environment.
