Inheritance of social dominance is associated with global sperm DNA methylation in inbred male mice

Dominance relationships between males and their associated traits are usually heritable and have implications for sexual selection in animals.In particular,social dominance and its related male pheromones are heritable in inbred mice;thus,we wondered whether epigenetic changes due to altered levels of DNA methylation determine inheritance.Here,we used C57BL/6 male mice to establish a social dominance-subordination relationship through chronic dyadic encounters,and this relationship and pheromone covariation occurred in their offspring,indicative of heritability.Through transcriptome sequencing and whole-genome DNA methylation profiling of the sperm of both generations,we found that differential methylation of many genes was induced by social dominance-subordination in sires and could be passed on to the offspring.These methylated genes were mainly related to growth and development processes,neurodevelopment,and cellular transportation.The expression of the genes with similar functions in whole-genome methylation/bisulfite sequencing was also differentiated by social dominance-subordination,as revealed by RNA-seq.In particular,the gene Dennd1a,which regulates neural signaling,was differentially methylated and expressed in the sperm and medial prefrontal cortex in paired males before and after dominance-subordination establishment,suggesting the potential epigenetic control and inheritance of social dominance-related aggression.We suggest that social dominance might be passed on to male offspring through sperm DNA methylation and that the differences could potentially affect male competition in offspring by affecting the development of thenervous system.

Specific Ion Effects on the Enzymatic Degradation of Polyester Films

Soil environment on earth contains a variety of ions,which are expected to play a vital role in the biodegradation of plastics discarded in the environment.In this work,poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)(PBAT)is employed as a model biodegradable plastic to study the specific ion effects on the enzymatic degradation of polyester plastics.The results show that the specific ion effects on the enzymatic degradation rate of the PBAT films and on the catalytic rate constant for the enzymatic hydrolysis of the ester bonds are strongly dependent on temperature and ionic strength.Both the enzymatic degradation rate and catalytic rate constant decrease following the trends Na^(+)>K^(+)>Ca^(2+)and Cl^(-)>SO_(4)^(2-)>NO_(3)^(-)for cations and anions,respectively,indicating that the ion-specific enzymatic degradation of the PBAT films is closely correlated with the specific ion effects on enzymatic hydrolysis of the ester bonds.Our study shows that the specific ion effects on the enzyme activity can be understood by taking into account the ion-specific cation-anion interaction,ionic dispersion force,salting-out effect and salting-in effect.This study of specific ion effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis of the ester bonds and the resultant enzymatic degradation of the PBAT films would offer us a new clue to develop new biodegradable,environmentally friendly synthetic plastics.

Genetic boundary and gene flow between 2 parapatric subspecies of brown rats

Two parapatric Rattus norvegicus subspecies,R.n.humiliatus(RNH)and R.n.caraco(RNC),are classified accordi ng to morphological diverge nee and are mainly distributed in North and Northeast China.Here,we aimed to explore the population genetic structure,genetic boundary,and gene flow in these rats using 16 microsatellite loci.Structure analysis and principal component an alysis revealed 3 ancestral clusters.We found that the in termediate cluster exhibited higher genetic diversity and a lower in breeding coefficie nt tha n the other 2 clusters.The genetic differentiation between the 3 clusters was significant but weak,with a higher FST value being observed betwee n the clusters on both sides.The subspecies bou ndary inf erred from microsatellite markers may indicate the existence of an admixture or hybridization area covering Liaoning,Inner Mongolia,and Jilin Provinces,rather than corresponding to the administrative provincial boundaries between Liaoning and Jilin.The RNH and RNC subspecies presented moderate gene exchange and an asymmetric bidirectional gene flow pattern,with higher gene flow from the RNH subspecies to the RNC subspecies,constraining speciation.Such genetic characteristics might be explained by biological processes such as dispersal ability,mate choice,and dynamic lineage boundaries.

Synthesis of substitutional hexaboride of lanthanum and cerium La_(1-x)Ce_(x)B_(6) via aluminothermic reduction

Rare-earth hexaborides(REB_(6))are vital raw materials for cathode materials and high temperature structural ceramics that are widely applied as high-frequency electron tubes and ceramics adaptive for extreme environment,respectively.In this work,single phase substitutional solid solution REB_(6)(LaB_(6),La_(0.75)Ce_(0.25)B_(6).La_(0.5)Ce_(0.5)B_(6),La_(0.25)Ce_(0.75)B_(6) and CeB_(6))powders were prepared with the raw materials of La_(2)O_(3),CeO_(2),B_(4)C and Al powders,after calcining at 1773 K for 4 h and the following alkaline leaching.All substitutional solid solution products have homogeneous distributions of La and Ce in particles.Through microscopic morphology analysis,it is discovered that the formation of solid solution is beneficial for reducing the particle size of product,relative to LaB_(6) and CeB_(6).Moreover,Al flux plays an important role in decarbonizing reaction,and C contents of all products are below 0.4 wt%.

With the commercialization of fifth generation networks worldwide,research into sixth generation(6G)networks has been launched to meet the demands for high data rates and low latency for future services.A wireless propagation channel is the transmission medium to transfer information between the transmitter and the receiver.Moreover,channel properties determine the ultimate performance limit of wireless communication systems.Thus,conducting channel research is a prerequisite to designing 6G wireless communication systems.In this paper,we first introduce several emerging technologies and applications for 6G,such as terahertz communication,industrial Internet of Things,space-air-ground integrated network,and machine learning,and point out the developing trends of 6G channel models.Then,we give a review of channel measurements and models for the technologies and applications.Finally,the outlook for 6G channel measurements and models is discussed.

New insight into foregut functions of xenobiotic detoxification in the cockroach Periplaneta americana

The physiological functions of insect foregut,especially in xenobiotic detox ification,are scarcely reported because of unimportance in appearance and insufficient molecular information.The cockroach Periplaneta americana,an entomological model organism,provides perfect material to study physiological functions of foregut tissue due to its architectuxal feature.Through Illumina sequencing of foregut tissue from P.amer icana individuals (control)or insects treated with cycloxaprid,as a novel neonicotinoid insecticide,54 193 166 clean reads were obtained and further assembled into 53 853 unigenes with an average length of 366 bp.Furthermore,the number of unigenes involved in xenobiofic detoxification was analyzed,mainly including 70 cytochrome P450s,12 glutathione S-transferases (GSTs),seven carboxylesterases (CarEs)and seven adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette (ABC)transporters.Compared to control,the expression of 22 xenobiotic detoxification unigenes was up-regulated after cycloxaprid application, mainly containing 18 P450s,one GST,two CarEs and one ABC adenosine triphosphate transporter,indicating that the oxidation-reduction was the major reactive process to cy cloxaprid application.Through quantitative real-time polymerase chitin reaction analysis, the expression of selected unigenes (six P450s,one GST and one CarE.)was up-regulated at least two-fold following cycloxaprid treatment,and was generally in agreement with transcriptome data.Compared to the previous midgut transcriptome of P.americana,it looks like the expressive abundance of the xenobiotic detoxification unigenes might be important factors to the detoxifying fimctional differences between foregut and midgut.In conclusion,insect foregut would also play important roles in the physiological processes related to xenobiotic detoxification.

Continuous purification and culture of rat type 1 and type 2 alveolar epithelial cells by magnetic cell sorting

Purpose:The incidence of acute lung injury(ALI)in severe trauma patients is 48%and the mortality rate following acute respiratory distress syndrome evolved from ALI is up to 68.5%.Alveolar epithelial type 1 cells(AEC1 s)and type 2 cells(AEC2s)are the key cells in the repair of injured lungs as well as fetal lung development.Therefore,the purification and culture of AECls and AEC2s play an important role in the research of repair and regeneration of lung tissue.Methods:Sprague-Dawley rats(3-4 weeks,120-150 g)were purchased for experiment.Dispase and DNase I were jointly used to digest lung tissue to obtain a single-cell suspension of whole lung cells,and then magnetic bead cell sorting was performed to isolate Tla positive cells as AECls from the single-cell suspension by using polyclonal rabbit anti-Tla(a specific AECls membrane protein)antibodies combined with anti-rabbit IgG microbeads.Afterwards,alveolar epithelial cell membrane marker protein EpCAM was designed as a key label to sort AEC2s from the remaining Tla-neg cells by another positive immunomagnetic selection using monoclonal mouse anti-EpCAM antibodies and anti-mouse IgG microbeads.Cell purity was identified by immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry.Resii沾••The purity of AECls and AEC2s was 88.3%±3.8%and 92.6%±2.7%,respectively.The cell growth was observed as follows:AECls stretched within the 12-16 h,but the cells proliferated slowly;while AEC2s began to stretch after 24 h and proliferated rapidly from the 2nd day and began to differentiate after 3 days.Conclusion:AECls and AEC2s sorted by this method have high purity and good viability.Therefore,our method provides a new approach for the isolation and culture of AECls and AEC2s as well as a new strategy for the research of lung repair and regeneration.

Let Y_(t) be an autoregressive process with order one,i.e.,Y_(t)=μ+ϕnY_(t-1)+εt,where fεtg is a heavy tailed general GARCH noise with tail indexα.Letϕn be the least squares estimator(LSE)ofϕn.Forμ=0 andαzhang and Ling(2015)thatϕn is inconsistent when Y_(t) is stationary(i.e.,ϕn.,ϕzhang(2010)showed thatϕn is still consistent with convergence rate n when Y_(t) is a unit-root process(i.e.,ϕn=1)and fεtg is a GARCH(1,1)noise.There is a gap between the stationary and nonstationary cases.In this paper,two important issues will be considered:(1)what about the nearly unit root case?(2)When canϕbe estimated consistently by the LSE?We show that whenϕn=1-c/n,then bϕn converges to a functional of stable process with convergence rate n.Further,we show that if limn!1 kn(1-ϕn)=c for a positive constant c,then kn(ϕn-ϕ)converges to a functional of two stable variables with tail indexα/2,which means thatϕn can be estimated consistently only when kn!1.

Community structure, dispersal ability and functional profiling of microbiome existing in fat body and ovary of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens

The endosymbionts play vital roles in growth, development and reproduction in insects. Yeast-like endosymbionts (YLSs) have been well studied in Nilaparvata lugens (N. lugens), but little is known about the tissue-specific bacterial microbiomes, especially on the microbial intersection among internal tissues. Here, the correlation of microbial composition, structure, dispersal ability and functional profiling were illuminated in two tissues, the fat body and ovary in N. lugens. A total of 11 phyla and 105 genera were captured from all samples;Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the most predominant and accounted for more than 99% in all samples. However, the relative abundance ofFirmicutes and Proteobacteria was significantly different in ovary and fat body through Fisher's Least Significant Difference test. Microbial diversity but not the richness index in the two tissues exhibited significant difference. Furthermore, the microbial community structure of the ovary and fat body were primarily determined by tissue quality. Firmicutes showed strong dispersal ability between ovary and fat body based on the quantitative null model assessing, indicating the frequent interaction of these microbiomes in the two tissues. In addition, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways of microbial participation were delineated. The ten most abundant pathways counted for over 46% of the annotation and were shared between the two tissues, mainly containing Energy Metabolism and Amino Acid Metabolism/Biosynthesis. The results will provide insights into the correlation of microbial community structure between ovary and fat body of N. lugens.
