Development of machine learning-based models to predict 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease:a prospective cohort study

Background Previous prediction algorithms for cardiovascular diseases(CVD)were established using risk factors retrieved largely based on empirical clinical knowledge.This study sought to identify predictors among a comprehensive variable space,and then employ machine learning(ML)algorithms to develop a novel CVD risk prediction model.Methods From a longitudinal population-based cohort of UK Biobank,this study included 473611 CVD-free participants aged between 37 and 73 years old.We implemented an ML-based data-driven pipeline to identify predictors from 645 candidate variables covering a comprehensive range of health-related factors and assessed multiple ML classifiers to establish a risk prediction model on 10-year incident CVD.The model was validated through a leave-one center-out cross-validation.Results During a median follow-up of 12.2 years,31466 participants developed CVD within 10 years after baseline visits.A novel UK Biobank CVD risk prediction(UKCRP)model was established that comprised 10 predictors including age,sex,medication of cholesterol and blood pressure,cholesterol ratio(total/high-density lipoprotein),systolic blood pressure,previous angina or heart disease,number of medications taken,cystatin C,chest pain and pack-years of smoking.Our model obtained satisfied discriminative performance with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)of 0.762±0.010 that outperformed multiple existing clinical models,and it was well-calibrated with a Brier Score of 0.057±0.006.Further,the UKCRP can obtain comparable performance for myocardial infarction(AUC 0.774±0.011)and ischaemic stroke(AUC 0.730±0.020),but inferior performance for haemorrhagic stroke(AUC 0.644±0.026).Conclusion ML-based classification models can learn expressive representations from potential high-risked CVD participants who may benefit from earlier clinical decisions.

教师数字素养是应对数字化变革、推动教育数字化转型和实现数字化战略计划的关键所在。本研究为探讨学校数字化支持如何有效提升教师数字素养,对我国东部省市1002名中小学教师进行了调查,构建了教师信息技术效能感和以学生为中心的教学信念在学校数字化支持和教师数字素养之间发挥中介作用的路径模型。结果显示,学校数字化支持对教师数字素养无显著的直接影响效应,教师信息技术效能感和以学生为中心的教学信念在学校数字化支持和教师数字素养之间分别发挥显著的正向中介作用,并同时发挥链式中介效应。为了提升教师数字素养,亟需从学校和教师个人层面协同施力,通过资源支持的充分保障、教师技术效能感的提升和教学信念的转型,助力教师实现数字素养水平的优化升级。

为了分析水体中浮游生物群落的时空变化特征,对2018年11月—2019年12月南水北调天津干线箱涵输水的浮游生物群落进行调查。在天津干线沿线设置了5个监测点,共鉴定到浮游植物4门38属。其中绿藻17属,占总属类数的44.7%,而硅藻对浮游植物密度的贡献最大。曲壳藻(Achnanthes)与桥弯藻(Cymbella)为全年出现次数最多的浮游植物优势属;浮游动物中桡足类1属1种、枝角类5属7种、轮虫11属13种,优势种为汤匙华哲水蚤(Sinocalanus dorrii)。另外,基于浮游生物群落结构、丰度、多样性综合指数等对天津干线总体水质进行了评价,判断出其总体营养状态处于贫-中营养型,污染程度属于寡污-中污型。同时分析了水体中浮游生物群落的时空变化特征,并对造成变化的原因进行了讨论。

AWells-Riley/based COVID-19 infectiousrisk assessment model combining both short rangeandroom scale effects

There is growing evidence of the high transmission potential of COVID-19 through virus-laden aerosols.Because aerosols are inhaled in various concentrations,an overall assessment of transmission risks at different indoor scales is crucial.However,a comprehensive risk assessment method that evaluates the direct link between short-range and room-scale zones is stl lacking.In this paper,a risk assessment model combining both short-range and room-scale effects is developed to obtain effective reproduction number in confined indoor environments,called Turbulent Jet Wells Riley(TJWR)model.Combined with the viral load data and aerosol generation data of different human respiratory activities,the Monte Carlo simulation method is applied to calculate the quanta emission rate,which further provides the input parameters of the TJWR model.Three known outbreaks(Hangzhou banquet hall X,Guangzhou restaurant Y,and Hong Kong restaurant Z,China)are chosen to validate the TJWR model.Results show that the TJWR model is more efficient than the original Wells-Riley model.The average relative error of the TJWR model ranges between 9%and 44%,while for the Wells-Riley model,it ranges between 57%and 78%.The TJWR model also proves that infection risk assessments using the well-mixed assumption can systematically underestimate the transmission risk for those close to the source.Additionally,there is a significant positive linear correlation between the total number of exposed individuals at the short-range and the effective reproduction number.This newly developed TJWR model has great potential for rapid and real-time overall airborne transmission risk assessment in buildings and cities.

Enhanced and asymmetric signatures of hybridization at climatic margins: Evidence from closely related dioecious fig species

Hybridization plays a significant role in biological evolution. However, it is not clear whether ecological contingency differentially influences likelihood of hybridization, particularly at ecological margins where parental species may exhibit reduced fitnesses. Moreover, it is unknown whether future ecosystem change will increase the prevalence of hybridization. Ficus heterostyla and F. squamosa are closely related species co-distributed from southern Thailand to southwest China where hybridization, yielding viable seeds, has been documented. As a robust test of ecological factors driving hybridization, we investigated spatial hybridization signatures based on nuclear microsatellites from extensive population sampling across a widespread contact range. Both species showed high population differentiation and strong patterns of isolation by distance. Admixture estimates exposed asymmetric interspecific gene flow.Signatures of hybridization increase significantly towards higher latitude zones, peaking at the northern climatic margins. Geographic variation in reproductive phenology combined with ecologically challenging marginal habitats may promote this phenomenon. Our work is a first systematic evaluation of such patterns in a comprehensive, latitudinally-based clinal context, and indicates that tendency to hybridize appears strongly influenced by environmental conditions. Moreover, that future climate change scenarios will likely alter and possibly augment cases of hybridization at ecosystem scales.

Sparse Modal Decomposition Method Addressing Underdetermined Vortex-Induced Vibration Reconstruction Problem for Marine Risers

When investigating the vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of marine risers,extrapolating the dynamic response on the entire length based on limited sensor measurements is a crucial step in both laboratory experiments and fatigue monitoring of real risers.The problem is conventionally solved using the modal decomposition method,based on the principle that the response can be approximated by a weighted sum of limited vibration modes.However,the method is not valid when the problem is underdetermined,i.e.,the number of unknown mode weights is more than the number of known measurements.This study proposed a sparse modal decomposition method based on the compressed sensing theory and the Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit(Co Sa MP)algorithm,exploiting the sparsity of VIV in the modal space.In the validation study based on high-order VIV experiment data,the proposed method successfully reconstructed the response using only seven acceleration measurements when the conventional methods failed.A primary advantage of the proposed method is that it offers a completely data-driven approach for the underdetermined VIV reconstruction problem,which is more favorable than existing model-dependent solutions for many practical applications such as riser structural health monitoring.

Trace elements in magmatic and hydrothermal quartz:Implications on the genesis of the Xingluokeng Tungsten Deposit,South China

The Xingluokeng deposit is the largest gran-ite-related tungsten deposit within the Wuyi metallogenic belt in South China.The Xingluokeng intrusion primarily consists of porphyritic biotite granite,biotite granite,andfine-grained granite.The deposit is represented by veinlet-disseminated mineralization with K-feldspathization and biotitization,alongside quartz-vein mineralization with gre-isenization and sericitization.This study investigates in-situ analyses of quartz compositions from both the intrusion and hydrothermal veinlets and veins.Trace element correlations indicate that trivalent Al^(3+)and Fe^(3+)replace Si^(4+)within the quartz lattice,with monovalent cations(such as Li^(+),Na^(+),and K^(+))primarily serving as charge compensators.Low Ge/Al ratios(<0.013)of quartz from granites suggest a mag-matic origin.The low Al/Ti and Ge/Ti ratios,accompanied by high Ti contents in quartz,suggest that the porphyritic biotite granite and biotite granite are characterized by rela-tively low levels of differentiation and high crystallization temperatures.In contrast,thefine-grained granite exhibits a higher degree of fractionation,lower crystallization tem-peratures,and a closer association with tungsten miner-alization.Ti contents in quartz from quartz veins indicate Qz-Ⅰformed at temperatures above 400°C,while Qz-Ⅱto Qz-Ⅴformed at temperatures below 350°C.Variations in different generations of quartz,as indicated by Al content and(Al+Fe)/(Li+Na+K)ratio,suggest that Qz-Ⅰprecipi-tated from a less acidicfluid with a stable pH,whereas Qz-Ⅱto Qz-Ⅴoriginated from a more acidicfluid with notable pH variations.Consequently,alkaline alteration and acidic alteration supplied the essential Ca and Fe for the precipita-tion of scheelite and wolframite,respectively,highlighting a critical mechanism in tungsten mineralization at the Xin-gluokeng deposit.

Hydrogen economy based on electrochemical water splitting exemplified one of the most promising means for overcoming the rapid consumption of fossil fuels and the serious deterioration of global climate.The development of earth-abundant,efficient,and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)plays a vital role in the commercialization of water electrolysis.Regard,the self-supported electrode with unique nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide(N-rGO)nanoflakes and WS_(2) hierarchical nanoflower that were grown directly on carbon cloth(CC)substrate(WS_(2)/N-rGO/CC)was successfully synthesized using a facile dual-step hydrothermal approach.The as-synthesized 50%1T/2H-WS_(2)/N-rGO/CC(WGC),which possessed high metallic 1T phase of 57%not only efficiently exposed more active sites and accelerated mass/charge diffusion,but also endowed excellent structural lustiness,robust stability,and durability at a high current density.As a result,the 50%WGC exhibited lower overpotentials and Tafel slopes of 21.13 mV(29.55 mV∙dec^(-1))and 80.35 mV(137.02 mV∙dec^(-1))as compared to 20%Pt-C/CC,respectively for catalyzing acidic and alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions.Pivotally,the as-synthesized 50%WGC also depicted long-term stability for more than 8 h in the high-current-density regions(100 and 220 mA∙cm^(-2)).In brief,this work reveals a self-supported electrode as an extraordinary alternative to Pt-based catalysts for HER in a wide pH range,while paving a facile strategy to develop advanced electrocatalysts with abundant heterointerfaces for practical applications in energy-saving hydrogen production.

Knockout of a rice K5.2 gene increases Ca accumulation in the grain

Rice is a staple food for half of the world’s population,but it is a poor dietary source of calcium(Ca)due to the low concentration.It is an important issue to boost Ca concentration in this grain to improve Ca deficiency risk,but the mechanisms underlying Ca accumulation are poorly understood.Here,we obtained a rice(Oryza sativa)mutant with high shoot Ca accumulation.The mutant exhibited 26%-53% higher Ca in shoots than did wild-type rice(WT)at different Ca supplies.Ca concentration in the xylem sap was 36% higher in the mutant than in the WT.There was no difference in agronomic traits between the WT and mutant,but the mutant showed 25% higher Ca in the polished grain compared with the WT.Map-based cloning combined with a complementation test revealed that the mutant phenotype was caused by an 18-bp deletion of a gene,OsK5.2,belonging to the Shaker-like K+channel family.OsK5.2 was highly expressed in the mature region of the roots and its expression in the roots was not affected by Ca levels,but upregulated by low K.Immunostaining showed that OsK5.2 was mainly expressed in the pericycle of the roots.Taken together,our results revealed a novel role for OsK5.2 in Ca translocation in rice,and will be a good target for Ca biofortification in rice.

Hemorrhagic transformation in patients with large-artery atherosclerotic stroke is associated with the gut microbiota and lipopolysaccharide

Hemorrhagic transformation is a major complication of large-artery atheroscle rotic stroke(a major ischemic stro ke subtype)that wo rsens outcomes and increases mortality.Disruption of the gut microbiota is an important feature of stroke,and some specific bacteria and bacterial metabolites may contribute to hemorrhagic transformation pathogenesis.We aimed to investigate the relationship between the gut microbiota and hemorrhagic transformation in largearte ry atheroscle rotic stro ke.An observational retrospective study was conducted.From May 2020 to September 2021,blood and fecal samples were obtained upon admission from 32 patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke and not undergoing intravenous thrombolysis or endovascular thrombectomy,as well as 16 healthy controls.Patients with stro ke who developed hemorrhagic transfo rmation(n=15)were compared to those who did not develop hemorrhagic transformation(n=17)and with healthy controls.The gut microbiota was assessed through 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid sequencing.We also examined key components of the lipopolysaccharide pathway:lipopolysaccharide,lipopolysaccharide-binding protein,and soluble CD14.We observed that bacterial diversity was decreased in both the hemorrhagic transformation and non-hemorrhagic transfo rmation group compared with the healthy controls.The patients with ischemic stro ke who developed hemorrhagic transfo rmation exhibited altered gut micro biota composition,in particular an increase in the relative abundance and dive rsity of members belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family.Plasma lipopolysaccharide and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein levels were higher in the hemorrhagic transformation group compared with the non-hemorrhagic transfo rmation group.lipopolysaccharide,lipopolysaccharide-binding protein,and soluble CD14 concentrations were associated with increased abundance of Enterobacte riaceae.Next,the role of the gut microbiota in hemorrhagic transformation was evaluated using an experimental stroke rat model.In this model,t
