Quality of life after three kinds of esophagectomy for cancer

AIM： TO evaluate quality of life （QOL） following Ivor Lewis, left transthoracic, and combined thoracoscopic/ laparoscopic esophagectomy in patients with esopha- geal cancer. METHODS： Ninety patients with esophageal cancer were assigned to Ivor Lewis （/7 = 30）, combined thora- coscopic/laparoscopic （n = 30）, and left transthoracic （n = 30） esophagectomy groups. The QOL-core 30 questionnaire and the supplemental QOL-esophageal module 18 questionnaire for patients with esophageal cancer, both developed by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, were used to evaluate patients＇ QOL from 1 wk before to 24 wk after surgery. RESULTS： A total of 324 questionnaires were collect- ed from 90 patients, 36 postoperative questionnaires were not completed because patients could not be contacted for follow-up visits. QOL declined markedly in all patients at 1 wk postoperatively： preoperative and 1-wk postoperative global QOL scores in the Ivor Lewis, combined thoracoscopic/laparoscopic, and left transthoracic groups were 80.8 ± 9.3 vs 32.0 ± 16.1 （P 〈 0.001）, 81.1±9.0 vs 53.3 ± 11.5 （P 〈 0.001）, and 83.6 ± 11.2 vs 46.4 ± 11.3 （P 〈 0.001）, respectively. Thereafter, QOL recovered gradually in all patients. Patients who underwent Ivor Lewis esophagectomy showed the most pronounced decline in QOL; global scores were lower in this group than in the combined thoracoscopic/laparoscopic （P 〈 0.001） and left trans- thoracic （P 〈 0.001） groups at 1 wk postoperatively and was not restored to the preoperative level at 24 wk postoperatively. QOL declined least in patients under- going combined thoracoscopic/laparoscopic esopha- gectomy, and most indices had recovered to preopera- tive levels at 24 wk postoperatively. In the Ivor Lewis and combined thoracoscopic/laparoscopic groups, pain and physical function scores were 78.9 ± 18.5 vs 57.8 ± 19.9 （P 〈 0.001） and 59.3 ± 16.1 vs 70.2 ± 19.2 （P = 0.02）, respectively, at 1 wk postoperatively and 26.1 ± 28.6 vs 9.5 ± 15.6 （P =

We analyze the existence and stability of two kinds of self-trapped spatially localized gap modes,gap solitons and truncated nonlinear Bloch waves,in one-and two-dimensional optical or matter-wave media with self-focusing nonlinearity,supported by a combination of linear and nonlinear periodic lattice *** former is found to be stable once placed inside a single well of the nonlinear lattice,it is unstable *** to the case with constant self-focusing nonlinearity,where the latter solution is always unstable,here,we demonstrate that it nevertheless can be stabilized by the nonlinear lattice since the model under consideration combines the unique properties of both the linear and nonlinear *** practical possibilities for experimental realization of the predicted solutions are also discussed.

Influence of laterite nickel ore on extracting iron from Bayer red mud by carbothermal smelting reduction

In view of the difficulty of extracting iron from Bayer red mud,a new idea of adding laterite nickel ore into red mud was proposed to prepare a high value-added *** this,the influences of laterite nickel ore on thermodynamic reaction,slagging and smelting reduction of extracting iron from red mud were *** results indicated that the product of extracting iron from red mud(R100)was changed with the addition of laterite nickel ore(R70L30).The slag of R100 was strongly basic,while the R70L30 was weakly acidic with composition closer to the ideal blast furnace *** metal recovery of R100 was 75.16%and that of R70L30 was 94.05%.At the same temperature,the slag viscosity of R70L30 was significantly lower than that of R100,which proved that laterite nickel ore can adjust the basicity,reduce melting point of slag and improve metal *** Fe,Ni and Cr in red mud and laterite nickel ore can be reduced sufficiently,a low Ni–Cr alloy cast iron can be directly prepared.

4,5-Dibromo-1-methyl-2-trichloroacetylpyrrole Ⅰ, prepared by the reaction of 1-methyl-2-trichloroacetylpyrrole with Br2 in 98.6 % yield, was condensed with methyl L-2-amino-3- phenylpropanoate to afford methyl 2-（4,5-dibromo-1-methylpyrrole-2-carboxmido）-3-phenylpropanoate Ⅱ in 90.8% yield. Crystal data for Ⅰ： monoclinic system, space group P21/c with a = 8.595（3）, b = 10.900（4）, c = 12.321（5） ,A°,β = 92.292（7）°, V = 1153.4（8）A°^3, Dc = 2.213 g/cm^3, F（000） = 728, CTH4Br2Cl3NO, Mr = 384.28, λ = 0.71073 A°, μ（MoKa） = 7.688 mm^-1, Z = 4, R = 0.0338 and wR2 = 0.0840 for 1963 observed reflections with I 〉 2a（I）. Crystal data for Ⅱ： monoclinic system, space group P21 with a = 4.886（2）, b = 15.921（8）, c = 11.635（6） A°,β = 101.803（9）°, V = 885.9（7） A°^3, Dc = 1.665 g/cm^3, F（000） = 440, C16H16Br2N2O3, Mr = 444.13, λ = 0.71073 A°, μ（MoKa） = 4.590 mm^-1, Z = 2, R = 0.0335 and wR2 = 0.0837 for 3191 observed reflections with I 〉 2σ（I）. Synthesis and Crystal Structure of 3-(Pyrrole-2′-carboxamido)propanoic Acid·(1/2)H_(2)O

3-(Pyrrole-2?-carboxamido)propanoic acid I has been synthesized from the reaction of β-alanine methyl ester with 2-trichloroacetylpyrrole followed by saponifying and acidating in 85.4% yield, and the crystal structure of 3-(pyrrole-2?-carboxamido)propanoic acid· (1/2)H2O (C8H11N2O3.5, Mr = 191.19) was obtained and determined by X-ray diffraction method. The crystal is of monoclinic, space group C2/c with a = 19.010(4), b = 8.3515(17), c = 13.788(3) ?, β = 125.88(3)o, V = 1773.6(6) ?3, Z = 8, Dc = 1.432 g/cm3, λ = 0.71073 ?, μ(MoKα) = 0.114 mm?1 and F(000) = 768. The structure was refined to R = 0.0354 and wR = 0.0942 for 1642 observed reflections with I > 2σ(I). It is revealed that the title compound has one pyrrole ring and one propionic acid subchain linked by an amido bond at C(4), and there are 8 molecules of com- pound I and 4 crystal water molecules in each unit cell. The supramolecular layers are stabilized by the hydrogen bonds of N(2) H…O(2), N(1) H…O(4), O(4) H(1W)…O(2) and O(3) H…O(1).

The computation of compressible flows becomesmore challengingwhen the Mach number has different orders of *** the Mach number is of order one,modern shock capturing methods are able to capture shocks and other complex structures with high numerical ***,if theMach number is small,the acoustic waves lead to stiffness in time and excessively large numerical viscosity,thus demanding much smaller time step and mesh size than normally needed for incompressible flow *** this paper,we develop an all-speed asymptotic preserving(AP)numerical scheme for the compressible isentropic Euler and Navier-Stokes equations that is uniformly stable and accurate for all Mach *** idea is to split the system into two parts:one involves a slow,nonlinear and conservative hyperbolic system adequate for the use of modern shock capturing methods and the other a linear hyperbolic system which contains the stiff acoustic dynamics,to be solved *** implicit part is reformulated into a standard pressure Poisson projection system and thus possesses sufficient structure for efficient fast Fourier transform solution *** the zero Mach number limit,the scheme automatically becomes a projection method-like incompressible *** present numerical results in one and two dimensions in both compressible and incompressible regimes.

The effect of second phases on the deformation mechanism of as-cast, solution-treated and aged Mg-7Al-2Sn (AT72) alloys during surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) was investigated. Twinning was suppressed in the alloys containing second phases, which can provide nonuniform microstructures and phase boundaries as dislocation sources. Dynamic precipitation in AT72 alloys was studied during SMAT deformation as ***2Sn particles can dynamically precipitate on the surface of all AT72 alloys during SMAT process. The quantity of Mg2Sn particles in the as-cast alloy, which is determined by the initial quantity of second phases, is larger than that of T4 and T6 alloys after the SMAT process.

A Novel and Pleiotropic Factor SLENDER GRAIN3 Is Involved in Regulating Grain Size in Rice

Grain size is frequently selected during domestication and breeding. It influences the preferences of consumers, thus affecting the commercial value of rice. In present study, a mutant named as SLENDER GRAIN3(sg3) was identified from cultivar Zhenong 41(Oryza sativa L. ssp. indica) with ethyl methanesulfonate(EMS) treatment. Histological analysis showed that the slender grain of sg3 mutant resulted from increased cell division longitudinally and decreased cell division horizontally. Compared with the wild type Zhenong 41, starch granules in sg3 mutant were more closely packed, thus decreasing the chalkiness. Moreover, grain yield per plant in sg3 mutant was improved by 14%. By map-based cloning, SG3 was located on the long arm of chromosome 3 with a physical distance of 82 kb, and a 9-bp deletion in the 5′-UTR of LOC_Os03 g27110 was identified, which upregulated the expression level significantly. Moreover, a molecular marker for SG3 was developed to identify the grain size during the early generation breeding in rice. The novel factor SG3 regulated the grain size mainly through changing the cell division and the endosperm formation in rice.
