Study on the local time asymmetry of the Earth's ring currents based on multiple low-Earth-orbit satellite magnetic observations

The azimuthal morphology of Earth's ring currents has consistently shown asymmetry during extreme space weather events at low latitudes,particularly during geomagnetic storms.A dawn-dusk pattern has been detected during the storm main phase through near-Earth and in-situ magnetic *** asymmetry is believed to arise from asymmetric solar windmagnetosphere coupling and is linked to the closure of the ring *** evidence has confirmed the existence of asymmetric ring currents during quiet times and the storm recovery *** phenomenon may be closely related to the evolution of ring currents,including plasma injection and decay *** this study,the local time asymmetry of the ring current is estimated using data from low-Earth-orbit Swarm and Macao Science Satellite-1(MSS-1)*** harmonics models are developed to quantify the magnetic field of ring currents through external Gauss coefficients during both quiet periods and the storm recovery *** features of dawn-dusk asymmetry are observed in various cases in different months.(1)The maximum difference in magnetic value across local time ranges from 3 to 10 nT,showing relative invariance compared with various Sym-H levels.(2)Stronger magnetic signals are detected at the premidnight sector during quiet times and at the afternoon sector during the storm recovery phase.(3)Magnetic perturbations remain at a lower level during the postmidnight and morning *** the pattern of local time asymmetry differs between quiet times and the recovery phase,dawn-dusk asymmetry remains the most pronounced feature,affecting the trapping and loss of charged particles in the inner *** Swarm and MSS-1 magnetic observations can enable convenient monitoring of the detailed azimuthal local time effects of the ring current at various disturbance levels in the future.

A future constellation of at least four geomagnetic satellites(designated Macao Scientific Satellite-1(MSS-1)and Macao Scientific Satellite-2(MSS-2))was recently proposed,to continue high-quality geomagnetic observations in the post-Swarm period,focusing especially on collecting data that will provide a global,three-dimensional survey of the geomagnetic *** this paper,we present a simulation of two years of orbits(2020.01.01-2022.01.01)of two satellites(tentatively denoted as MSS-2)that are constellated in elliptical(200×5,300 km)low-perigee *** comparing error variances of Gauss coefficients,we investigate the sensitivity of lithospheric magnetic field modelling to data collected from various satellite orbits,including a near circular reference orbit of 300×350km,and elliptical orbit of 180×5,300 km,220×5,300 km,200×3,000 km and 200×1,500 *** find that in two years the two MSS-2 satellites can collect 35,000 observations at altitude below 250 km,data that will be useful in advancing the quality of lithospheric magnetic field modelling;this number of observations reflects the fact that only 4.5%of the flight time of these satellites will be below250 km(just 6.4%of their flight time below 300 km).By combining observations from the MSS-2 satellites’elliptical orbits of 200×5,300km with observations from a circular reference orbit,the variance of the geomagnetic model can be reduced by a factor of 285 at spherical harmonic degree n=200 and by a factor of 1,300 at n=*** planned lower perigee of their orbits allows the new satellites to collect data at unprecedentedly lower altitudes,thus dramatically improving the spatial resolution of satellite-derived lithospheric field models,(up to 80%at n=150).In addition,lowering the apogee increases the time interval during which the satellites fly at near-Earth altitudes,thus improving the model predictions at all spherical harmonic degrees(around 52%-62%at n=150).The upper limit of the expected improvement to t

The Euler angle estimation is a calibration method for vector data measured by the magnetometer on a *** is used to find the relative rotation between the coordinate system of the magnetometer and the satellite(usually determined by Star Imagers).Before launch of the low-orbit,low-inclination Macao Science Satellite-1(known as MSS-1),we simulated the estimation of Euler angles by using the magnetic measurements of the in-orbit Swarm and China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite(noted as CSES),with various data *** this study,11 data sets were designed to analyze the estimation results for the MSS-1 orbit by using a joint estimation method of the geomagnetic field model parameters and Euler *** the model results,we found that all the spatial power spectral lines showed behavior consistent with that of the CHAOS-7.8 model at low degrees(corresponding to large-scale magnetic signals).The spectra of models without global data coverage deviated much more(by a maximum of~10^(4) nT^(2))from those of the CHAOS-7.8 model at higher *** models with global data coverage and with various data combinations,the spectral lines were distributed ***,the models with accordant power spectral distributions demonstrated different Euler angle *** more vector data at higher latitudes were included,the estimated Euler angles varied monotonically in all three *** models with vector data in the same latitude range showed similar Euler angle results,regardless of whether the poleward scalar data were *** largest value difference was found between the models using vector data within±40°latitudes and those using vector data within±60°latitudes,which reached to~28″.Therefore,we concluded that the inversion of the spherical harmonic Gauss coefficients in our tests was mainly affected by the spatial coverage range of the data,whereas the estimation of Euler angles largely depended on the latitude range where the vector d

CHAMP satellite data and ground-based magnetic observations are used and combined to map the lithospheric magnetic field over China by means of the revised spherical cap harmonic analysis(R-SHCA)modeling *** magnetic field is described to a spatial resolution of 150 km at the mean Earth’s radius,which represents a good compromise between the resolutions afforded by surface and satellite *** compare the magnetic anomalies modeled at the regional scale with composite regions containing large-scale of tectonic *** regions,including the Tarim Basin and the Tibetan Plateau,are correlated with regional magnetic anomalies at satellite altitude but contain a significant number of small-scale and complex magnetic structures at the mean Earth’s *** magnetic anomalies are globally consistent with the known geological features in China but also offer a way to delineate the contours of the geological blocks and to discuss the connection between magnetic anomalies and the heat flow distribution in this region.

Macao Science Satellite-1(MSS-1) is a two-star constellation mission sponsored jointly by the China National Space Administration(CNSA) and the Macau University of Science and Technology(MUST). The mission aims to explore the geomagnetic field and space particle radiation environment in low-inclination low Earth orbit. The satellite A of MSS-1(MSS-1A)carries the third-generation high-energy electron spectrometer(HES), developed by Peking University, to detect high-energy electrons. The HES sensor head utilizes a conventional ΔE-E silicon detector telescope, enabling measurements of high-energy electrons within a 45° cone angle field of view, ranging from 0.3 to 3.0 MeV. As a new generation of high-energy electron detectors(HEDs), the HES operates by default in the in-orbit multi-channel mode, allowing 128 segmented linear distributed energy bin counting measurements with a time resolution of 1 s. High energy resolution observations of high-energy electrons in the inner radiation belt by the HES onboard MSS-1A can help investigate the following questions: Do MeVelectrons exist in the inner radiation belt? What is the production mechanism of relativistic electrons in the inner radiation belt?

The Macao Science Satellite-1 is a two-satellite constellation specifically designed to study the geomagnetic field and particle radiation environment in low Earth orbit,particularly in the South Atlantic Anomaly region,with a low inclination *** of the two MSS-1 satellites carries a medium-energy electron spectrometer(MES).The MES sensor heads are based on pinhole imaging technology,which can simultaneously measure 50-600 keV electrons incident from nine directions with a field of view(FOV)of 180°×30°.The two MESs can realize the pitch angle coverage of medium energy electrons at most positions in the *** MSS-1 A/B MESs can realize direct observation of precipitating electrons and electrons near their loss *** can help to study the electron generation mechanism in the inner radiation belt and quantify the precipitation of magnetospheric energetic *** with the geomagnetic index,solar wind parameters,interplanetary magnetic field conditions,etc.,it can also help to build a dynamic evolution model of energetic electrons in the near-Earth space,to realize the early warning and prediction of space weather based on the observation data,which can provide safety for spacecraft and astronauts in the nearEarth space.

Ground-based magnetic observatory series are the main source of information for constructing time-dependent spherical harmonic geomagnetic field models from sub-annual to pluri-decadal time *** the reliability of such models requires accurate estimation of the data *** propose an analysis of observatory monthly means over the period 1930 to 2010,where we sequentially isolate(i) a stochastic regression for the main field at every site,performed in the framework of Gaussian processes,(ii) a local fit to annual and semiannual signals,(iii) a month by month estimate of global,large length-scale external and induced *** then estimate the unmodeled signal level(UMSL,which refers to the instrumental noise plus extra signals not captured by the above data treatment) from the standard deviation of the residuals to the sequential *** may be used to estimate data error covariances in future field modeling *** a function of the geomagnetic latitude,the UMSL is larger towards auroral regions and carries the temporal signature of solar *** the UMSL shows rather similar magnitudes in all three components in recent epochs(typically a few n T),a significant decrease is found in the downward component of the field around 1960,which correlates with the introduction of proton *** detail the geographic distribution of the periodic signals and confirm the variation of their amplitude at pluri-decadal time *** the spherical harmonic description of horizontal and vertical fields,we isolate the main patterns of the inducing field in *** are dominated by a zonal structure of degree 1(and to a lesser extent,of degree 3) in dipole *** nevertheless isolate secondary,non-zonal sources that are most active during the 1960 s and around 1990,periods of particularly large solar activity,denoting an unusual morphology of the inducing field.
