Meta-analysis on the epidemiology of gastroesophageal reflux disease in China

BACKGROUND No large-scale epidemiological survey on the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)in China has been conducted.China has a large population and a complex geographical environment.It is important to understand the prevalence and spatial distribution of GERD in China.AIM To explore the prevalence and the spatial,temporal,and population distributions of GERD in the natural Chinese population.METHODS We searched Chinese and English databases for literature on the prevalence of GERD in the natural Chinese population.The prevalence of GERD was pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis model.Subgroup analysis was performed according to time,region,and population.We used ArcGIS software to draw statistical maps and trend analysis charts.Spatial autocorrelation analysis was carried out using Geoda software.Spearman correlation analysis was used to assess the spatial distribution relationship between GERD and upper digestive tract tumours.RESULTS Altogether,70 studies involving 276014 individuals from 24 provinces of China were included.The overall pooled prevalence of GERD was 8.7%(95%CI:7.5%-9.9%)in China's Mainland.Over the past two decades,the prevalence of GERD in China has increased from 6.0%to 10.6%.GERD was more common in people aged 40-60,with body mass index≥24,and of Uygur ethnicity.The prevalence was higher in the west and east than in the centre,and there may be a local spatial autocorrelation between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the southeast.GERD was correlated with gastric(r=0.421,P=0.041)and oesophageal tumours(r=0.511,P=0.011)in spatial distribution.CONCLUSION GERD is becoming common in China.The prevalence differs by region and population.The development of appropriate strategies for the prevention and treatment of GERD is needed.

A review of surface roughness measurements based on laser speckle method

Surface roughness is commonly used to characterize material microstructure during processing,and accurate measurement of surface roughness is the premise and foundation of machining.Therefore,online non-destructive measurement of surface roughness based on the laser speckle method has become a hot issue in recent research.The improvements in surface roughness measurements based on the laser speckle method are systematically reviewed.Theory of speckle formation is introduced.The statistical properties of the speckle patterns including first-order statistical properties and second-order statistical properties are directly related to surface roughness.Surface roughness measurements based on the laser speckle method are roughly divided into the speckle contrast method,speckle correlation method,and fractal method.The three methods are described in detail,and an extensive comparison among all the methods is presented.The recent progresses and application of surface roughness measurements are reviewed.Finally,surface roughness measurements based on the laser speckle method are prospected and summarized.

Curcumin Inhibits Lipopolysaccharide-lnduced Mucin 5AC Hypersecretion and Airway Inflammation via Nuclear Factor Erythroid 2-Related Factor 2

Background： Excess mucus production is an important pathophysiological feature of chronic inflammatory airway diseases. Effective therapies are currently lacking. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects ofcurcumin （CUR） on lipopolysaccharide （LPS）-induced mucus secretion and inflammation, and explored the underlying mechanism in vivo and in vitro. Methods： For the in vitro study, human bronchial epithelial （NCI-H292） cells were pretreated with CUR or vehicle for 30 min, and then exposed to LPS for 24 h. Next, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 （Nrf2） was knocked down with Nrf2 small interfering RNA （siRNA） to confirm the specific role of Nrf2 in mucin regulation of CUR in NCI-H292 cells. In vivo, C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to three groups （n = 7 for each group）： control group, LPS group, and LPS ＋ CUR group. Mice in LPS and LPS ＋ CUR group were injected with saline or CUR （50 mg/kg） intraperitoneally 2 h before intratracheal instillation with LPS （ 100 μg/ml） for 7 days. Cell lysate and lung tissue were obtained to measured Mucin 5AC （MUC5AC） and Nrf2 mRNA and protein expression by a real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid （BALF） was collected to enumerate total cells and neutrophils. HistopathologicaI changes of the lung were observed. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Student＇s t-test was used when two groups were compared. Results： CUR significantly decreased the expression ofMUC5AC mRNA and protein in NCI-H292 cells exposed to LPS. This effect was dose dependent （2.424 ± 0.318 vs. 7.169 ± 1.785, t = 4.534, and 1.060 ± 0.197 vs. 2.340 ± 0.209, t = 7.716; both P 〈 0.05, respectively） and accompanied by increased mRNA and protein expression of Nrf2 （1.952 ± 0.340 vs. 1.142 ± 0.176, t = -3.661, and 2.010 ± 0.209 vs. 1.089 ±0. 132, t = -6.453; both P 〈 0.05, respectively）. Coinheritance of OLFM2 and SIX6 variants in a Chinese family with juvenile-onset primary open-angle glaucoma: A case report

BACKGROUND Juvenile-onset primary open-angle glaucoma(JOAG),characterized by severe elevation of intraocular pressure and optic neuropathy prior to the age of 40,is a rare subtype of primary open-angle glaucoma.Several genetic mutations have been associated with JOAG.CASE SUMMARY The proband patient was a young male,diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma at the age of 27.The patient and his unaffected parents who have been excluded from classic genetic mutations for primary open-angle glaucoma were included to explore for other possible genetic variants through whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis.In this trio,we found two heterozygous variants inherited from the parents in the proband:c.281G>A,p.Arg94His in OLFM2 and c.177C>G,p.Ile59Met in SIX6.Both genetic mutations are predicted through bioinformatics analysis to replace evolutionary conserved amino acids,therefore rendering a pathogenic effect on proteins.In contrast,very low frequencies for these genetic mutations were recorded in most common control databases.CONCLUSION This is the first report on coinherited mutations of OLFM2 and SIX6 in a JOAG family,which shows the complexity of JOAG inheritance.Large-scale clinical screening and molecular functional investigations on these coinherited mutations are imperative to improve our understanding of the development of JOAG.

To the Editor: Posner-Schlossmann syndrome (PSS), also known as glaucomatocyclitic crisis, is characterized by acute, unilateral, recurrent attacks of ocular hypertension, mild non-granulomatous anterior uveitis (AU), and spontaneous recovery. However, the etiology of this disease is unknown. Many mechanisms have been proposed including viral infection, autoimmune, autonomic dysregulation, allergic conditions and vascular endothelial dysfunction.[1] Topical anti-hypertensives and anti-inflammatory medications are typically prescribed to combat this disease. Repeated attacks may lead to longterm glaucomatous optic nerve damage over 5–10 years after the first episode. Because the pathophysiology is not completely understood, treatment and prevention of recurrences has proven to be difficult.

Primary acinic cell carcinoma of the breast: A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND In the current World Health Organization classification,acinic cell carcinoma(AcCC)of the breast is considered a rare histological subtype of triple-negative breast cancer.Because of the few reports in the literature,data concerning clinical outcomes are limited.Here,we report a case of AcCC of the breast in a 48-year-old woman.A 48-year-old woman with a mass in her right breast came to our hospital for further diagnosis.Mammography and an ultrasound(US)scan showed a mass in the upper inner side of the right breast.She then underwent surgery to resect the mass in her right breast.Postoperative pathological examination revealed that the tumor had abundant acinar-like structures formed by tumor cells with prominent eosinophilic granules in the cytoplasm,consistent with acinar cell carcinoma.The results of immunohistochemical analysis supported the diagnosis of breast acinar cell carcinoma.Two months later,she underwent breast-conserving surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy.The pTNM stage was T2N0M0.After surgery,the patient received 30 radiotherapy sessions.The patient was followed up for a period of one year,and no recurrence was found.AcCC of the breast is a rare type of malignant tumor.Because it is usually asym-ptomatic and can be detected by imaging studies,routine breast US or mamm-ograms are important.However,there are no characteristic diagnostic imaging findings or clinical manifestations,so immunohistochemical examination is critical for an accurate diagnosis of AcCC of the breast.

Anti-osteosarcoma trimodal synergistic therapy using NiFe-LDH and MXene nanocomposite for enhanced biocompatibility and efficacy

Osteosarcoma is usually resistant to immunotherapy and,thus primarily relies on surgical resection and high-dosage chemotherapy.Unfortunately,less invasive or toxic therapies such as photothermal therapy(PTT)and chemodynamic therapy(CDT)generally failed to show satisfactory outcomes.Adequate multimodal therapies with proper safety profiles may provide better solutions for osteosarcoma.Herein,a simple nanocomposite that synergistically combines CDT,PTT,and chemotherapy for osteosarcoma treatment was fabricated.In this composite,small 2D Ni Fe-LDH flakes were processed into 3D hollow nanospheres via template methods to encapsulate 5-Fluorouracil(5-FU)with high loading capacity.The nanospheres were then adsorbed onto larger 2D Ti3C2MXene monolayers and finally shielded by bovine serum albumin(BSA)to form 5-FU@Ni Fe-LDH/Ti3C2/BSA nanoplatforms(5NiTiB).Both in vitro and in vivo data demonstrated that the 5-FU induced chemotherapy,Ni Fe-LDH driven chemodynamic effects,and MXene-based photothermal killing collectively exhibited a synergistic“all-in-one”anti-tumor effect.5NiTiB improved tumor suppression rate fromminimizing side effects.Moreover,the composite is simple to produce,enabling the fine-tuning of dosages to suit different requirements.Thus,the platform is versatile and efficient,with potential for further development.

Psychological interventions for depression in children and adolescents:A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND Depression has gradually become a common psychological disorder among children and adolescents.Depression in children and adolescents affects their physical and mental development.Psychotherapy is considered to be one of the main treatment options for depressed children and adolescents.However,our understanding of the global performance and progress of psychological interventions for depression in children and adolescents(PIDCA)research is limited.AIM To identify collaborative research networks in this field and explore the current research status and hotspots through bibliometrics.METHODS Articles and reviews related to PIDCA from January 2010 to April 2023 were identified from the Web of Science Core Collection database.The Charticulator website,CiteSpace and VOSviewer software were used to visualize the trends in publications and citations,the collaborative research networks(countries,institutions,and authors),and the current research status and hotspots.RESULTS Until April 16,2023,1482 publications were identified.The number of documents published each year and citations had increased rapidly in this field.The United States had the highest productivity in this field.The most prolific institution was the University of London.Pim Cuijpers was the most prolific author.In the context of research related to PIDCA,both reference co-citation analysis and keywords co-occurrence analysis identified 10 research hotspots,including thirdwave cognitive behavior therapy,short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy,cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy,family element in psychotherapy,modular treatment,mobile-health,emotion-regulation-based transdiagnostic intervention program,dementia risk in later life,predictors of the efficacy of psychological intervention,and risks of psychological intervention.CONCLUSION This bibliometric study provides a comprehensive overview of PIDCA from 2010 to present.Psychological intervention characterized as psychological-process-focused,short,family-involved,modular,inte

The role of innate immunity in diabetic nephropathy and their therapeutic consequences

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is an enduring condition that leads to inflammation and affects a substantial number of individuals with diabetes worldwide. A gradual reduction in glomerular filtration and emergence of proteins in the urine are typical aspects of DN, ultimately resulting in renal failure. Mounting evidence suggests that immunological and inflammatory factors are crucial for the development of DN. Therefore, the activation of innate immunity by resident renal and immune cells is critical for initiating and perpetuating inflammation. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are an important group of receptors that identify patterns and activate immune responses and inflammation. Meanwhile, inflammatory responses in the liver, pancreatic islets, and kidneys involve inflammasomes and chemokines that generate pro-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, the activation of the complement cascade can be triggered by glycated proteins. This review highlights recent findings elucidating how the innate immune system contributes to tissue fibrosis and organ dysfunction, ultimately leading to renal failure. This review also discusses innovative approaches that can be utilized to modulate the innate immune responses in DN for therapeutic purposes.
