In the minimum degree vertex deletion problem,we are given a graph,a distinguished vertex in the graph,and an integer κ,and the question is whether we can delete at most κ vertices from the graph so that the distinguished vertex has the unique minimum degree.The maximum degree vertex deletion problem is defined analogously but here we want the distinguished vertex to have the unique maximum degree.It is known that both problems areΨ-hard and fixed-parameter intractable with respect to some natural parameters.In this paper,we study the(parameterized)complexity of these two problems restricted to split graphs,p-degenerate graphs,and planar graphs.Our study provides a comprehensive complexity landscape of the two problems restricted to these special graphs.

Receptor-like kinases(RLKs)are a large group of plant-specific transmembrane proteins mainly acting as receptors or co-receptors of various extracellular signals.They usually turn extracellular signals into intracellular responses via altering gene expression profiles.However,recent studies confirmed that many RLKs can physically interact with diverse membrane-localized transport proteins and regulate their activities for speedy responses in limited tissues or cells.In this minireview,we highlight recent discoveries regarding how RLKs can work with membrane transport proteins collaboratively and thereby trigger cellular responses in a precise and rapid manner.It is anticipated that such regulation broadly presents in plants and more examples will be gradually revealed when in-depth analyses are conducted for the functions of RLKs.

With the advancement of micro machining technology,the high-heat-flux removal from miniature electronic devices and components has become an attractive topic.Flow boiling in micro-channels is an optimal form of heat transfer and has been widely employed in high-heat-flux cooling applications.This comprehensively-reviewed article focused on the available recent literatures of experimental investigation regarding the flow boiling heat transfer and unstable behaviors of the fluid with lower boiling point in micro-channels.The thermal-fluid characteristics and potential heat transfer mechanisms of low-boiling-point fluids flow boiling in different narrow passages were summarized and discussed.The literatures regarding the pressure drop and occurrence of the unstable phenomena existing in two-phase flow boiling process were also discussed.The emphasis was given to the heat transfer enhancement methods as well as instability elimination,and various methods such as modification of surface and channel flow geometries were considered.Some future researches in the field of micro-scale flow boiling were suggested.

Plant intracellular nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat(NLR)receptors with an N-terminal Toll/Interleukin-1 recep-tor(TIR)domain detect pathogen effectors to produce TIR-catalyzed signaling molecules for activation of plant immunity.Plant immune signaling by TIR-containing NLR(TNL)proteins converges on Enhanced Disease Suscepti-bility 1(EDS1)and its direct partners Phytoalexin Deficient 4(PAD4)or Senescence-Associated Gene 101(SAG101).TNL signaling also require helper NLRs N requirement gene 1(NRG1)and activated disease resistance 1(ADR1).In two recent remarkable papers published in Science,the authors show that the TIR-containing proteins catalyze and produce two types of signaling molecules,ADPr-ATP/diADPR and pRib-AMP/ADP.Importantly,they demonstrate that EDS1-SAG101 and EDS1-PAD4 modules are the receptor complexes for ADPr-ATP/diADPRp and Rib-AMP/ADP,respec-tively,which allosterically promote EDS1-SAG101 interaction with NRG1 and EDS1-PAD4 interaction with ADR1.Thus,two different small molecules catalyzed by TIR-containing proteins selectively activate the downstream two distinct branches of EDS1-mediated immune signalings.These breakthrough studies significantly advance our understanding of TNL downstream signaling pathway.

Mars exploration has become a hot spot in recent years and is still advancing rapidly. However, Mars has massive dust storms that may cover many areas of the planet and last for weeks or even months. The local/global dust storms are so influential that they can significantly reduce visibility, and thereby the images captured by the cameras on the Mars rover are degraded severely. This work presents an unsupervised Martian dust storm removal network via disentangled representation learning(DRL). The core idea of the DRL framework is to use the content encoder and dust storm encoder to disentangle the degraded images into content features(on domain-invariant space) and dust storm features(on domain-specific space). The dust storm features carry the full dust storm-relevant prior knowledge from the dust storm images. The “cleaned” content features can be effectively decoded to generate more natural, faithful, clear images.The primary advantages of this framework are twofold. First, it is among the first to perform unsupervised training in Martian dust storm removal with a single image, avoiding the synthetic data requirements. Second, the model can implicitly learn the dust storm-relevant prior knowledge from the real-world dust storm data sets, avoiding the design of the complicated handcrafted priors. Extensive experiments demonstrate the DRL framework’s effectiveness and show the promising performance of our network for Martian dust storm removal.

BACKGROUND:Prompt pathogen identification can have a substantial impact on the optimization of antimicrobial treatment.The objective of the study was to assess the diagnostic value of next-generation sequencing(NGS)for identifying pathogen and its clinical impact on antimicrobial intervention in immunocompromised patients with suspected infections.METHODS:This was a retrospective study.Between January and August 2020,47 adult immunocompromised patients underwent NGS testing under the following clinical conditions:1)prolonged fever and negative conventional cultures;2)new-onset fever despite empiric antimicrobial treatment;and 3)afebrile with suspected infections on imaging.Clinical data,including conventional microbial test results and antimicrobial treatment before and after NGS,were collected.Data were analyzed according to documented changes in antimicrobial treatment(escalated,no change,or deescalated)after the NGS results.RESULTS:The median time from hospitalization to NGS sampling was 19 d.Clinically relevant pathogens were detected via NGS in 61.7% of patients(29/47),more than half of whom suffered from fungemia(n=17),resulting in an antimicrobial escalation in 53.2% of patients(25/47)and antimicrobial de-escalation in 0.2% of patients(1/47).Antimicrobial changes were mostly due to the identification of fastidious organisms such as Legionella,Pneumocystis jirovecii,and Candida.In the remaining three cases,NGS detected clinically relevant pathogens also detected by conventional cultures a few days later.The antimicrobial treatment was subsequently adjusted according to the susceptibility test results.Overall,NGS changed antimicrobial management in 55.3%(26/47)of patients,and conventional culture detected clinically relevant pathogens in 14.9% of the patients(7/47).CONCLUSION:With its rapid identification and high sensitivity,NGS could be a promising tool for identifying relevant pathogens and enabling rapid appropriate treatment in immunocompromised patients with suspected infections.

Background Few studies have investigated the effects of air pollutants on children with acute bronchitis.This study aimed to explore the acute effects of four air pollutants[fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5)),inhalable particulate matter(PM10),sulfur dioxide(SO_(2)),and nitrogen dioxide(NO_(2))]on the daily number of children admitted to the hospital for acute bronchitis in Sichuan Province,China.Methods The 49,975 records of hospitalized children with acute bronchitis from medical institutions in nine cities/prefectures,Sichuan Province,China,as well as the simultaneous meteorological data and air pollution data from 183 monitoring sites,were collected from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2018.A generalized additive model was adopted to analyze the exposure–response and lag effects of hospitalizations of children with acute bronchitis to air pollutants.Stratified analyses were conducted based on sex,age,and season.Results The single-pollutant model showed that a 10µg/m3 increase at lag07 of PM_(2.5),PM10,SO_(2),and NO_(2) corresponded to an increase of 1.23%[95%confidence interval(CI)0.21–2.26%],1.33%(95%CI 0.62–2.05%),23.52%(95%CI 11.52–36.81%),and 12.47%(95%CI 8.46–16.64%)in daily hospitalizations for children with acute bronchitis,respectively.Children aged 0–2 were more prone to PM_(2.5)(Plized for acute bronchitis.

An electrochemical thermal coupling model of lithium battery was established to study the heat generation characteristic in this study.The simulation results showed that the heat generation density of the battery increased with the discharge rate.With the discharge process,the heat generation density of the battery increased continuously.With 2.5C discharge rate,the heat generation density at the end of discharge was 1.82 times of that at the beginning of discharge.The heat generation density at different areas of the battery was not uniform and 46%of the total ohmic heat was generated near the electrode tabs.A cooling plate with variable mini-channels was designed to improve the temperature non-uniformity caused by the heat generation characteristic.A cooling plate with uniform mini-channels was designed for compared experiment.The experiments were conducted with deionized water and refrigerant R141b and carried out with 1.5C,2C and 2.5C discharge rates.Experimental results showed that the cooling plate with variable mini-channels had a better cooling performance in both single-phase and two-phase cooling conditions.

Fine-grained visual parsing, including fine-grained part segmentation and fine-grained object recognition, has attracted considerable critical attention due to its importance in many real-world applications, e.g., agriculture, remote sensing, and space technologies. Predominant research efforts tackle these fine-grained sub-tasks following different paradigms, while the inherent relations between these tasks are neglected. Moreover, given most of the research remains fragmented, we conduct an in-depth study of the advanced work from a new perspective of learning the part relationship. In this perspective, we first consolidate recent research and benchmark syntheses with new taxonomies. Based on this consolidation, we revisit the universal challenges in fine-grained part segmentation and recognition tasks and propose new solutions by part relationship learning for these important challenges. Furthermore, we conclude several promising lines of research in fine-grained visual parsing for future research.
