BACKGROUND Melioidosis,an infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei(***),occurs endemically in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia and is a serious opportunistic infection associated with a high mortality *** SUMMARY A 58-year-old woman presented with scattered erythema on the skin of her limbs,followed by fever and *** was isolated successively from the patient’s urine,blood,and *** resonance imaging showed abscess formation involving the right forehead and the right frontal ***,abscess resection and drainage were *** patient showed no signs of relapse after 4 months of follow-up visits *** We present here a unique case of multi-systemic melioidosis that occurs in nonendemic regions in a patient who had no recent travel ***,it is critical to enhance awareness of melioidosis in non-endemic regions.

The effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma(PRP)for the treatment of Achilles tendon disorders still needs to be evaluated through a series of prospective studies,but genomic analysis can reveal the existence of complementary PRP treatment *** on the 96 platelet activation-related genes in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG)database,we performed Gene Ontology functional enrichment analysis and KEGG enrichment analysis,pathway correlation analysis,and enrichment mapping to determine the enrichment results of the gene set enrichment analysis and found that the cAMP signalling pathway may be the key to enhancing the effectiveness of PRP *** cAMP signalling pathway interacts with the Rap1 signalling pathway and cGMPPKG signalling pathway to mediate the entire pathophy-siological process of Achilles tendon ***,ADCY1-9 may be the key to the activation of the cAMP signalling *** based on the data in the Gene Expression Omnibus database,it was found that ADCY4 and ADCY7 may be the players that play a major role,associated with the STAT4-ADCY4-LAMA5 axis and the GRbeta-ADCY7-SEMA3C axis,which is expected to be a complementary target for enhancing the efficacy of PRP in the treatment of Achilles tendon disease.

Objective Brain metastases significantly impact the clinical course of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).This study aimed to examine the age-related incidence,demographics,and survival of patients with HCC and brain *** Data of HCC patients from 2010 to 2015 in the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results(SEER)Registry were screened for the presence of brain *** were stratified by age and *** logistic and Cox regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with brain metastases and those with overall survival(OS)and liver cancer-specific survival(CSS),*** A total of 141 HCC patients presenting with brain metastases were identified,accounting for 0.35% of all HCC patients and 2.37% of patients with metastatic *** all HCC patients,the incidence rate was the highest among patients aged 30-49 years old(0.47%).Ethnicity was not associated with the presence of brain metastases at the time of HCC ***,African-American patients presented with a significantly lower disease-specific survival[median time:1 month;interquartile range(IQR):0-3.0 months].Initial lung or bone metastasis was independently associated with an increased risk of the presence of brain metastases[odds ratio(OR):12.62,95% confidence interval(CI):8.40-18.97]but was not associated with a worse OS or CSS among those with brain *** This study identified the age-related incidence and risk factors of brain metastases in HCC *** results may contribute to the consideration of brain screening among patients with initial metastatic HCC with lung or bone metastases,and influence the counseling of this patient population regarding their prognosis.

Background There is no appropriate tool to predict recombinant human growth hormone(rhGH)response before therapy initiation in short-stature children in late *** current study aimed to explore the associations between magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)stages of the knee growth plates and rhGH response in short-stature children in late *** In this prospective cohort study,short-stature children in late puberty were treated with rhGH and followed up for 6 *** proposed a novel knee MRI staging system according to the growth plate states of distal femurs or proximal tibias and divided the participants into three groups:unclosed growth plate group,marginally closed growth plate group,and nearly closed growth plate *** primary outcomes were height gain and growth velocity(GV),which were assessed three months *** Fifty participants were enrolled,including 23 boys and 27 *** and height gain after 6 months of rhGH therapy decreased successively in the three groups with an increased degree of growth plate fusion,especially when grouped by proximal tibias(GV_(1-3 mon)from 9.38 to 6.08 to 4.56 cm/year,GV_(4-6 mon)from 6.75 to 4.92 to 3.25 cm/year,and height gain from 4.03 to 2.75 to 1.95 cm,all P<0.001).Moreover,the MRI stages of growth plates independently served as a significant variable for GV and height gain after therapy,especially when grouped by proximal tibias(all P<0.01).Conclusion The MRI staging method is expected to be an effective tool for predicting rhGH response before therapy initiation in short-stature children in late puberty.

NiTiCu-based shape memory alloys have been considered as ideal materials for solid-state refrigeration due to their superb cycling stability for elastocaloric ***,the embrittlement and deterioration caused by secondary phase and coarse grains restrict their applications,and it is still challenging since the geometric components are ***,bulk NiTiCuCo parts with excellent forming quality were fabricated by laser powder bed fusion(LPBF)*** as-fabricated alloy exhibits refined three-phases hierarchical microcomposite formed based on the rapid cooling mode of LPBF,composed of intricate dendritic Ti2Ni–NiTi composite and nano Ti2Cu embedded inside the *** configuration endows far superior elastocaloric stability compared to the as-cast *** low fatigue stems from the strong elastic coupling between the interphases with reversible martensite transformation,revealed by in-situ synchrotron high-energy x-ray *** fabrication of NiTiCuCo alloy via LPBF fills the bill of complex geometric structures for elastocaloric NiTiCu *** understanding of interphase micro-coupling could provide the guide for designing LPBF fabricated shape memory-based composites,enabling their applications for special demands on other functionalities.

Surface wettability plays a significant role in reducing solid–liquid frictional resistance,especially the superhydrophilic/hydrophilic interface because of its excellent thermodynamic *** this work,poly(acrylic acid)-poly(acrylamide)(PAA–PAM)hydrogel coatings with different thicknesses were prepared in situ by polydopamine(PDA)-UV assisted surface catalytically initiated radical *** drag reduction performance of hydrogel surface was measured using a rotational rheometer by the plate–plate *** experimental results showed that the average drag reduction of hydrogel surface could reach up to about 56%in Couette flow,which was mainly due to the interfacial polymerization phenomenon that enhanced the ability of hydration layer to delay the momentum dissipation between fluid layers and the diffusion behavior of *** proposed drag reduction mechanism of hydrogel surface was expected to shed new light on hydrogel–liquid interface interaction and provide a new way for the development of steady-state drag reduction methods.

Ulcerative colitis(UC)is a recurrent inflammatory bowel disease that imposes a severe burden on families and *** recent years,exploiting the potential of marine bioactive peptides for the treatment of diseases has become a topic of intense research *** study revealed the mechanism underlying the protective effect of the dominant polypeptide PKKVV(Pro-Lys-Lys-Val-Val)of Rhopilema esculentum cnidoblasts against DSS-induced UC through a combined analysis of the metagenome and serum ***,the polypeptide composition of *** cnidoblasts was determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry(MALDI-TOF/TOF-MS).Molecular docking showed that the dominant peptide PKKVV could bind better with tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)than the original *** animal experiments suggested that PKKVV could modulate disorganized gut microorganisms in mice with UC;affect serum metabolites through the arachidonic acid,glycerophospholipid and linoleic acid metabolism pathways;and further alleviate UC *** study provides a reference for the comprehensive development of marine bioactive substances and nonpharmaceutical treatments for UC.

The jiangchuan Biota from the jiucheng Member(Mb.)of the Dengying Formation(Fm.),discovered in jiangchuan,eastern Yunnan,China,is marked by copious macrofossils at the apex of the Ediacaran *** fauna features benthic algae with varied holdfasts and other fossils of indeterminate taxonomic affinity and is compositionally unique compared to the Shibantan and Gaojiashan biotas of the Dengying *** the Miaohe and Wenghui biotas of the Doushantuo Fm.,elsewhere in *** novel benthic saccular macroalgal fossil,named here Houjiashania yuxiensis *** ***.,from the jiangchuan Biota is based on fossils that are sausage-shaped,elongate,tubular,ranging from 0.3 to 4 cm in length,and up to 0.8 cm in *** terminus is blunt and rounded to an obtuse angle,the other is bent with a spread-out surface resembling a holdfast,suggesting a three-dimensional ***,stipe-shaped outgrowths,likely vestiges of sessile saccular life forms,are prevalent in macroalgal fossils of analogous size and shape,as well as present brown algae Scytosiphonaceae,such as Colpomenia and *** new findings augment the diversity of benthic algae,such as those known from the Early Neoproterozoic Longfengshan Biota in North *** benthic algal macrofossils in the jiucheng *** to knowledge of Late Ediacaran metaphyte diversification and offer more clues about the evolutionary positioning of primitive *** co-occurrence of numerous planktonic and benthic multicellular algae and planktonic microbes might have facilitated ecologically the more extensive later Cambrian explosion evidenced by the Chengjiang Biota in Yunnan.

Chromate[Cr(VI)]contamination in groundwater is a global environmental *** elemental sulfur-based biotechnologies for Cr(VI)removal depend heavily on the synthesis of dissolved organic carbon to fuel heterotrophic Cr(VI)reduction,a bottleneck in the remediation *** we show an alternative approach by leveraging sulfur-disproportionating bacteria(SDB)inherent to groundwater ecosystems,offering a novel and efficient Cr(VI)removal *** implemented SDB within a sulfur-packed bed reactor for treating Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater,achieving a notable removal rate of 6.19 mg L^(-1) h^(-1) under oligotrophic *** identified the chemical reduction of Cr(VI)via sulfide,produced through sulfur disproportionation,as a key mechanism,alongside microbial Cr(VI)reduction within the sulfur-based ***-centric metagenomic analysis revealed a symbiotic relationship among SDB,sulfur-oxidizing,and chromate-reducing bacteria within the reactor,suggesting that Cr(VI)detoxification by these microbial communities enhances the sulfurdisproportionation *** research highlights the significance of sulfur disproportionation in the cryptic sulfur cycle in Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater and proposes its practical application in groundwater remediation efforts.
