Obesity is an important determinant of severity in newly defined metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease

Background: The recently proposed definition of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD) is based on the co-existence of hepatic steatosis with other metabolic disorders, including obesity and metabolic risk abnormalities such as hyperglycemia, high blood pressure and dyslipidemia. This study aimed to assess MAFLD severity according to the presence of metabolic abnormalities and obesity. Methods: Using transient elastography, hepatic steatosis and fibrosis severity were assessed by measuring the controlled attenuation parameter and liver stiffness measurement. A total of 1163 patients with MAFLD were categorized into the following four groups according to metabolic risk abnormalities and obesity presence: non-obese without metabolic risk abnormality group(Group 1;reference group);nonobese with metabolic risk abnormality group(Group 2);obese without metabolic risk abnormality group(Group 3);and obese with metabolic risk abnormality group(Group 4). A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine severe hepatic steatosis and fibrosis risk in each group in both unadjusted and adjusted models. Results: In the adjusted model, the odds ratios(ORs) [95% confidence interval(CI)] for severe hepatic steatosis in Groups 2, 3, and 4 were 1.07(0.61-1.88), 2.43(1.44-4.08), and 4.07(2.56-6.48), respectively( P trend < 0.001). For liver fibrosis, compared with Group 1, Group 2 showed no significant increases in OR, whereas Groups 3 and 4(obese groups) showed significant increases(OR = 4.70, 95% CI: 1.24-17.82 and OR = 6.43, 95% CI: 1.88-22.02, respectively). Conclusions: Obesity, rather than metabolic abnormality, is the principal determinant of severe hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in patients with MAFLD.

Cholecystectomy increases the risk of metabolic syndrome in the Korean population:a longitudinal cohort study

Background:Cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure to treat symptomatic gallstones;however,the long-term outcomes after cholecystectomy are ***,we aimed to investigate whether incident metabolic syndrome(MetS)is associated with cholecystectomy through a large,population-based,longitudinal ***:Subjects aged≥20 years who underwent cholecystectomy from 2010 to 2014(n=76,485)and controls(n=76,485),matched for age and sex,were identified from the Korean National Health Insurance *** proportional hazards analyses were performed to evaluate the association between cases and incident MetS,and hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals(CIs)were ***:A total of 152,970 patients were *** age was 52.47±12.76 years,and 50.65% of participants were *** the follow-up period,there were 38,979(25.48%)newly diagnosed MetS cases in the study *** risk of MetS in the cholecystectomy group was approximately 20% higher than that in the control group[adjusted odds ratio(OR),1.20;95%CI:1.17-1.23].In the fully adjusted models,the corresponding ORs for new-onset high waist circumference(WC),low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)levels,high triglycerides(TG)levels,high blood pressure(BP),and high blood glucose levels were 1.16(1.13-1.19),1.19(1.16-1.22),1.25(1.22-1.28),1.27(1.23-1.31),and 1.21(1.18-1.24),*** was an independent risk factor of incident MetS,after adjusting for potential confounding *** the subgroup analyses,the cholecystectomy group had a higher risk of MetS than the control group in subjects without hypertension or dyslipidemia,***:In this large,population-based study,cholecystectomy was associated with an increased risk of developing MetS,independent of other confounding ***,careful monitoring of metabolic variables and long-term follow-up are required to evaluate MetS risk after cholecystectomy.

Bee venom(BV),one of the most commonly encountered types of animal venom,consists of a mixture of chemical agents that cause allergic reactions in the human body.⑴BV therapy,in which BV is exploited for medicinal purposes,is available worldwide,mainly used in Asia,Eastern Europe,and South America.(2)BV therapy has been applied to treat a diverse set of diseases including various musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism,arthralgia,chronic recalcitrant neuralgia,(3-5)Parkinson's disease,(6,7)postherpetic neuralgia,(8)and morphea.(9)Although the therapeutic utility of BV has been demonstrated,extensive studies regarding the safety of BV as a therapeutic agent have identified potential side effects,ranging from minor skin reactions that typically resolve over several days to severe life-threatening immune responses such as anaphylaxis.

Healthy, natural, efficient and tunable lighting: four-package white LEDs for optimizing the circadian effect, color quality and vision performance

To date,most current reports on the development and optimization of artificial lighting sources have focused on the energy performance levels and limited color qualities of white light-emitting diodes(LEDs).However,these properties are insufficient in terms of representing all performance levels required when adjusting white LEDs for healthy and smart ***,we introduce essential and advanced figures of merit pertaining to circadian performance as well as vision performance and color *** compare all possible properties of commercialized artificial lighting,daylight and four-package white LEDs which consist of long-wavelength pass dichroic filter(LPDF)-capped,phosphor-converted red,amber and green LEDs(pc-LEDs)and a blue *** show that these tunable four-package white LEDs produce a tunable circadian effect for melatonin suppression/secretion,a high color quality for color perception/reproduction,high efficiency for energy savings and tunable figures of merit for the smart LED lighting market.

Sargassum horneri extracts loaded nanostructured lipid carriers:Preparation,physicochemical properties,and in vitro antioxidant activity studies

This study tried to establish optimal conditions for Sargassum horneri extracts loaded nanostructured lipid carriers(SHE-NLCs).Therefore,we observed various physicochemical analyzes,sugar and phenolic contents,and anti-oxidants while storing the SHE-NLCs for 28 days at different SHE addition amounts(0%-0.5%)and storage temperatures(25 and 65℃).All SHE-NLCs stored at 25℃ showed a small hydrodynamic diameter(20.1-25.4 nm)and high encapsulation efficiency(64.1%-89.3%)for 28 *** the amount of SHE increased,the pH and electrical conductivity of SHE-NLCs significantly decreased and increased,respectively(p<0.05).Also,at 25℃,prevented a sharp decrease in the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of SHE-NLCs as the storage period increased compared to 65℃.SHE 0.25%loaded NLCs can stably maintain the formulation structure for 28 days at room temperature while being an amount sufficiently containing the functionality of SHE.

Health risks of pest control and disinfection workers after the COVID-19 outbreak in South Korea

The exposure patterns of pest control and disinfection workers have changed after the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak,but the health risks of chemical exposure have not been *** identified these workers’chemical exposure patterns and risks before and after the COVID-19 *** used data conducted between 2018(pre-pandemic)and 2021(post-pandemic)from three-year cross-sectional surveys on pest control and disinfection *** and dermal exposure concentrations were estimated using equations based on a biocidal product risk assessment model from the Korean National Institute of Environmental *** non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of chemicals were calculated using the United States Environmental Protection Agency risk assessment *** found that the annual work frequency(50^(th)percentile)of foggers using disinfectants increased the most among all the work types,from 140 uses/year to 176 uses/year after the COVID-19 ***,all chemicals’non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks increased regardless of exposure *** the worst scenario(95^(th)percentile),the margin of exposure for citric acid,benzethonium chloride,benzyl-C12-16-alkyldimethyl chlorides,and sodium chlorite of inhalation exposure,and isopropyl alcohol and benzyl-C12-16-alkyldimethyl chlorides of dermal exposure were acceptable(>100)before the COVID-19outbreak but became unacceptable(10^(-6))before and after the COVID-19 outbreak but comparatively high after the COVID-19 ***,significantly more workers experienced health symptoms after the COVID-19outbreak(p<0.05),with the most common being muscle lethargy(31%),skin/face stinging(28.7%),and breath shortness/neck pain(24.1%).

With the rapid evolution of Internet of things(IoT),many edge devices require simultaneous connection in 5G communication *** afford massive data of IoT devices,multiple input multiple output non-orthogonal multiple access(MIMO-NOMA)method has been considered as a promising ***,there are numerous drawbacks due to error propagation and inter-user ***,proposed scheme aims to improve the reliability of the MIMO-NOMA system with digital beamforming and intracluster cooperative multi point(CoMP)to efficiently support IoT *** the conventional MIMO-NOMA system,user entities are grouped into *** diagonalization(BD)is applied to efficiently eliminate the inter-cluster interference of the MIMO-NOMA ***,since the channel path of the data stream from a single antenna to a single cluster doesn’t hold other cluster’s data,the system can’t fully utilize the selective subcarrier channel *** indicates that there can be better channel paths for a data stream at a certain subcarrier ***,proposed scheme allocates data streams to antennas adaptively considering selective channel ***,intra-cluster CoMP method is adjusted to enhance the reliability of the system in the *** simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves BER and throughput performance compared to the conventional MIMO-NOMA system.

Anti-cancer effect of ethylacetate fraction from Orostachys japonicus on HT-29 human colon cancer cells by induction of apoptosis through caspase-dependent signaling pathway

Objective: To investigate the anti-colon cancer effects of ethylacetate fraction from Orostachys japonicus(0. japonicus) on HT-29 cancer cells. Methods: The viability of HT-29 cells was assayed by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2 H-tetrazolium(MTS) method. Apoptosis induction and cell cycle inhibition were confirmed by fluorescein isothiocyanate and propidium iodide staining using flow *** changes in the nucleus were observed, using a fluorescence microscope with4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole(DAPI) nuclear staining. The expression levels of the upstream and downstream proteins involved in the anti-cancer mechanism were confirmed by Western blotting. Results: After treating HT-29 cells with different concentrations of ethylacetate fraction from O. japonicus, the viability of cells decreased in a concentration-dependent manner,while apoptosis induction and apoptotic body formation increased. Cell cycle analysis showed that the arrest occurred at the sub-G_1 and S phase. Among the upstream and downstream proteins involved in anti-cancer activity, the level of B cell lymphoma-2 decreased, and the bcl-2-associated x protein increased. The level of pro-caspase-3, pro-caspase-8, and pro-caspase-9 decreased, while the level of cleaved-caspase-3, cleaved-caspase-8, and cleaved-caspase-9 increased. Moreover, the phosphorylation, that is, activation of extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2, Jun-N-terminal kinase, and p38 increased. Conclusions: Combining the above results, it is thought that the survival of HT-29 cells is suppressed by ethylacetate fraction from0. japonicus through mitochondrial regulation-induced caspase cascade activation, induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

Design of 1 kbit antifuse one time programmable memory IP using dual program voltage

A 1 kbit antifuse one time programmable(OTP) memory IP,which is one of the non-volatile memory IPs,was designed and used for power management integrated circuits(ICs).A conventional antifuse OTP cell using a single positive program voltage(VPP) has a problem when applying a higher voltage than the breakdown voltage of the thin gate oxides and at the same time,securing the reliability of medium voltage(VM) devices that are thick gate transistors.A new antifuse OTP cell using a dual program voltage was proposed to prevent the possibility for failures in a qualification test or the yield *** the newly proposed cell,a stable sensing is secured from the post-program resistances of several ten thousand ohms or below due to the voltage higher than the hard breakdown voltage applied to the terminals of the *** layout size of the designed 1 kbit antifuse OTP memory IP with Dongbu HiTek's 0.18 μm Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS(BCD) process is 567.9 μm×205.135 μm and the post-program resistance of an antifuse is predicted to be several ten thousand ohms.
