Despite their simplicity,monolayer cell cultures are not able to accurately predict drug behavior in vivo due to their inability to accurately mimic cell-cell and cell-matrix *** contrast,cell spheroids are able to reproduce these interactions and thus would be a viable tool for testing drug ***,the generation of homogenous and reproducible cell spheroids on a large scale is a labor intensive and slow process compared to monolayer cell ***,we present a droplet-based microfluidic device for the automated,large-scale generation of homogenous cell spheroids in a uniform *** the microfluidic system,the size of the spheroids can be tuned to between 100 and 130μm with generation frequencies of 70 *** demonstrated the photothermal therapy(PTT)application of brain tumor spheroids generated by the microfluidic device using a reduced graphene oxide-branched polyethyleneimine-polyethylene glycol(rGO-BPEI-PEG)nanocomposite as the PTT ***,we generated uniformly sized neural stem cell(NSC)-derived neurospheres in the droplet-based microfluidic *** also confirmed that the neurites were regulated by ***,this droplet-based microfluidic device could be a powerful tool for photothermal therapy and drug screening applications.

The Dangjo chili pepper(DJ)has been reported to contain various compounds withα-glucosidase inhibitory ***,the hypoglycemic effect of DJ and the active ingredients responsible have not been fully ***,the current study aimed to examine DJ as a novelα-glucosidase inhibitor for the prevention of *** identification of metabolites and the assessment ofα-glucosidase inhibitory activity was conducted in three chili pepper *** uptake inhibition by DJ ethanol extract(DJE)was evaluated in Caco-2 ***,an oral carbohydrate tolerance test was performed in C57BL/6 mice.A total of 18 metabolites were identified in Dangjo,Green,and Cucumber chili *** these,quercitrin was one the most abundant flavonoid in *** DJ showed the highest inhibition ofα-glucosidase activity against both maltose and sucrose compared to other *** addition,isoorientin,quercitrin,and DJE had similar inhibitory activities for both *** uptake was significantly inhibited in the DJE group compared to the control *** mice were orally administered freeze-dried DJ at 150 and 300 mg/kg body weight(B.W.),and blood glucose levels were *** glucose loading,both groups had significantly reduced blood glucose concentration compared to the control group(p=0.001).Under maltose loading,the blood glucose concentration was decreased in the 150 mg/kg *** compared to the control group(p=0.025).These results indicate that Dangjo chili pepper has the potential to function as a postprandial hypoglycemic agent by inhibiting theα-glucosidase activity.

We report on the microstructure and the strengthening mechanisms of additively manufactured parts fabricated by directed energy deposition of Ti-6Al-4V(Ti64)powders blended with yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ)*** specimens showed refined microstructures as compared to bare as-deposited Ti64,where theαand columnar priorβgrain sizes decreased with increasing YSZ *** YSZ nanoparticles decomposed during the deposition process and led to the formation of yttrium oxide and some excess oxygen in the Ti64 *** decrease in the sizes of the priorβgrains could be attributed to the increasing amount of dissolved oxygen and yttrium,which promoted constitutional ***,the reduction in the size of theαgrains could be ascribed to a shift of the onset of theβ→α+βtransformation to a higher temperature and shorter time with increasing concentration of dissolved ***,the contributions of the underlying strengthening mechanisms for the as-deposited specimens were quantitatively determined.

Wearable technology requires high-performance sensors with properties such as small size,flexibility,and wireless ***,sensitivity,and tunability are crucial sensor properties;stretchability and sensitivity ensure user comfort and accurate sensing performance,while tunability is essential for implementing sensors in diverse applications with different ranges of *** this study,we developed a high performance kirigami piezoelectric strain *** finite element analysis,the sensing performance was evaluated,and the kirigami patterns were *** electromechanical properties of sensors with four different kirigami patterns were analyzed.A sensor voltage measurement circuit was also designed,amplifying the output voltage 86.5 times by improving measurement accuracy.A piezoelectric kirigami sensor was constructed with a sensitivity of 9.86 V/cm^(2) and a stretchability of 320.8%,higher than those of previously reported kirigami piezoelectric strain ***,the fabricated sensor was successfully applied in a haptic glove for playing musical instruments.

Acute pancreatitis during pregnancy is a rare event,and can be associated with high maternal mortality and fetal *** disease is thought to be the most common causative factor of acute pancreatitis,but,in many cases,the cause remains *** report a case of a 36-year-old woman at 35 wk of gestation,who presented with severe pain confined to the upper abdomen and radiating to the *** patient was diagnosed with acute idiopathic pancreatitis,which was managed conservatively;she recovered within several days and then delivered a healthy *** it is important to consider acute pancreatitis when a pregnant woman presents with upper abdominal pain,nausea and vomiting in order to improve fetal and maternal outcomes for patients with acute pancreatitis.

In plane micro-supercapacitors that are miniaturized energy storage components have attracted significant attention due to their high power densities for various ubiquitous and sustainable device systems as well as their facile integration on various flexible/wearable *** implement the micro-supercapacitors in various practical applications that can accompany solid state or gel electrolyte and flexible substrates,ions must be readily transported to electrodes for achieving high power ***,we show large enhancement in electrochemical properties of flexible,inplane micro-supercapacitor using sharp-edged interdigitated electrode design,which was simply fabricated through direct laser scribing *** sharp-edged electrodes allowed strong electric field to be induced at the corners of the electrode fingers which led to the greater accumulation of ions near the surface of electrode,significantly enhancing the energy storage performance of *** electric field-enhanced in-plane micro-supercapacitor showed the volumetric energy density of 1.52 Wh L^(−1)and the excellent cyclability with capacitive retention of 95.4%after 20000 *** further showed various practicability of our sharp-edged design in micro-supercapacitors by showing circuit applicability,mechanical stability,and air *** results present an important pathway for designing electrodes in various energy storage devices.

Erythropoietin （EPO） and granulocyte colony- stimulating factor （G-CSF） are likely to play broad roles in the brain. We investigated the effects of combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF in hypoxic- ischemic brain injury during the acute, subacute, and chronic phases. A total of 79 C57BL/6 mice with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury were randomly assigned acute （days 1-5）, subacute （days 11-15）and chronic （days 28-32） groups. All of them were treated with G-CSF （250 μg/kg） and EPO （5 000 U/kg） or saline daily for 5 consecutive days. Behavioral assessments and immunohistochemistry for angiogenesis, neuro- genesis, and astrogliosis were performed with an 8-week follow-up. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 （HIF-1） was also measured by Western blot analysis. The results showed that the combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF in the acute phase significantly improved rotarod performance and forelimb-use symmetry compared to the other groups, while subacute EPO and G-CSF therapy exhibited a modest improvement compared with the chronic saline controls. The acute treatment significantly increased the density of CD31^＋（PECAM-1） and a-smooth muscle actin^＋ vessels in the frontal cortex and striatum, increased BrdU^＋/PSA- NCAM^＋ neurogenesis in the subventricular zone, and decreased astroglial density in the striatum. Furthermore, acute treatment significantly increased the HIF-1 expression in the cytosol and nucleus, whereas chronic treatment did not change the HIF-1 expression, consistent with the behavioral outcomes. These results indicate that the induction of HIF-1 expression by combination therapy with EPO and G-CSF synergistically enhances not only behavioral function but also neurogenesis and angiogenesis while decreasing the astroglial response in a time- dependent manner.

The fabrication of an internal diffraction grating with photoinduced refractive index modification in planar hybrid germanium-silica plates was demonstrated using low-density plasma formation excited by a high-intensity femtosecond (150 fs) Ti:sapphire laser (λp=790 nm).The refractive index modifications with diameters ranging from 400 nm to 3 μm were photoinduced after plasma formation occurred upon irradiation with peak intensities of more than 2×1013 W/*** graded refractive index profile was fabricated to be a symmetric around from the center of the point at which low-density plasma occurred.
