The Amazon basin has experienced an extreme drought that started in the austral summer of 2022-23 and extends into 2024. This drought started earlier than other previous droughts. Although some rain fell during the austral summer, totals remained below average. Higher temperatures during austral winter and spring 2023, which affected most of Central South America, then aggravated drought conditions. This coincided with an intense El Niño and abnormally warm tropical North Atlantic Ocean temperatures since mid-2023. Decreased rainfall across the Amazon basin, negative anomalies in evapotranspiration (derived from latent heat) and soil moisture indicators, as well as increased temperatures during the dry-to-wet transition season, September-October-November (SON) 2023, combined to delay the onset of the wet season in the hydrological year 2023-24 by nearly two months and caused it to be uncharacteristically weak. SON 2023 registered a precipitation deficit of the order of 50 to 100 mm/month, and temperatures +3˚C higher than usual in Amazonia, leading to reduced evapotranspiration and soil moisture indicators. These processes, in turn, determined an exceptionally late onset and a lengthening of the dry season, affecting the 2023-2024 hydrological year. These changes were aggravated by a heat wave from June to December 2023. Drought-heat compound events and their consequences are the most critical natural threats to society. River levels reached record lows, or dried up completely, affecting Amazonian ecosystems. Increased risk of wildfires is another concern exacerbated by these conditions.

The Gravitational Potential and the Gravitational Force According to the Correct Reissner-Nordstrøm, Kerr and Kerr-Newman Metrics

In a recent article, we have corrected the traditional derivation of the Schwarzschild metric, thus obtaining the formulation of the correct Schwarzschild metric, which is different from the traditional Schwarzschild metric. Then, in another article by starting from this correct Schwarzschild metric, we have corrected also the Reissner-Nordstrøm, Kerr and Kerr-Newman metrics. On the other hand, in a third article, always by starting from this correct Schwarzschild metric, we have obtained the formulas of the correct gravitational potential and of the correct gravitational force in the case described by this metric. Now, in this article, by starting from these correct Reissner-Nordstrøm, Kerr and Kerr-Newman metrics and proceeding in a manner analogous to this third article, we obtain the formulas of the correct gravitational potential and of the correct gravitational force in the cases described by these metrics. Moreover, we analyze these correct results and their consequences. Finally, we propose some possible crucial experiments between the commonly accepted theory and the same theory corrected according to this article.

Role of Helicobacter pylori infection and the risk of cholelithiasis

This article aims to deepen the understanding of the role of Helicobacter pylori(***)infection in the development of cholelithiasis,initiated by the article by Yao et al,who investigated the potential link between *** infection and the development of cholelithiasis through a multicenter retrospective study on an Asian population of over 70000 *** also performed a compre-hensive analysis of previously published studies on *** and cholelithiasis,finding a positive association therein[odds ratio(OR)=1.103,P=0.049].Patients positive for *** also had lower levels of total and direct bilirubin,but higher levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol compared to uninfected patients(P<0.05).Cohort studies have confirmed that *** is a risk factor for cholelithiasis(P<0.0001),and aggregate analyses of case-control and cross-sectional studies have shown a positive association between *** and cholelithiasis in Asia(OR=1.599,P=0.034),but not in Europe(OR=1.277,P=0.246).Moreover,*** appears to be related to a higher ratio of choledocho-lithiasis/cholecystolithiasis(OR=3.321,P=0.033).The authors conclude that *** infection is positively correlated with cholelithiasis,particularly with the choledocholithiasis phenotype,especially in Asia,and it is potentially related to bilirubin and cholesterol metabolism.

Thermal and Electrical Modelling of a CPV/T System Varying Its Configuration

In this paper, the main aim is the performances modelling from the electrical and thermal point of view of a concentrating photovoltaic and thermal(CPV/T) system in order to evaluate the primary energy and economic savings respect to a traditional system, when the same energy loads are satisfied. This study is realized by both varying the CPV/T system configuration and considering two different users. In particular, the point-focus(PF), and linear focus(LF) configurations of the CPV/T system are considered in order to match the residential user and hotel energy loads. The CPV/T system is sized adopting as input data: the Direct Normal Irradiance(DNI) modelled by an artificial neural network and the users' energy demands. In these hypotheses, the performances of the PF and LF systems are evaluated and then compared for the two users located in Southern Italy, in terms of electrical and thermal energy production, cells number, space occupied, energy and economic savings and CO2 emissions avoided. Finally, the PF system shows a lower simple pay-back and a higher primary energy saving, while the space occupied by a LF system results to be lower respect to the PF configuration.

Locomotor adaptations in Plio-Pleistocene large carnivores from the Italian Peninsula： Palaeoecological implications

Mammalian carnivores are rarely considered for environmental reconstructions because they are extremely adaptable and their geographic range is usually large. However, the functional morphology of carnivore long bones can be indicative of locomotor behaviour as well as adaptation to specific kind of habitats. Here, different long bone ratios belonging to a subsample of extant large carnivores are used to infer palaeoecology of a comparative sample of Plio-Pleistocene fossils belonging to Italian paleo-communities. A multivariate long bone shape space reveals similarities between extant and fossil carnivores and multiple logistic regression models suggest that specific indices （the brachial and the Mt/F） can be applied to predict adaptations to grassland and tropical biomes. These functional indices exhibit also a phylogenetic signal to different degree. The brachial index is a significant predictor of adaptations to tropical biomes when phylogeny is taken into account, while Mt/F is not correlated anymore to habitat adaptations. However, the proportion of grassland-adapted carnivores in Italian paleo-communities exhibits a negative relationship with mean oxygen isotopic values, which are indicative of past climatic oscillations. As climate became more unstable during the Ice Ages, large carnivore guilds from the Italian peninsula were invaded by tropical/closed-adapted species. These species take advantage of the temperate forest cover that was more spread after 1.0 Ma than in the initial phase of the Quaternary （2.0 Ma） when the climate was more arid [Current Zoology 57 （3）： 269-283, 2011].

Gravitational and elastic energies stored in crustal volumes activate normal versus strike-slip and thrust seismogenic faults

Shallow crustal faults are passive features mobilized by the dissipation of the potential energy and the shear stress accumulated in the brittle volume surrounding ***,the stored energy in the volume differs from the tectonic setting,i.e.,it is mainly gravitational in extensional tectonic settings,whereas it is elastic in strike-slip and contractional tectonic *** extensional settings,below about 1 km,the horizontal tensile stress is overwhelmed by the confining pressure of the lithostatic load,and it becomes positive,***,there is no horizontal tension in extensional tectonic settings and the pro-gravity motion of the crustal volume is provided by the lithostatic load,which is the vertical maximum principal *** elastic energy is rather accumulated by the maximum horizontal principal stresses,i.e.,iso-gravity in transcurrent settings and counter-gravity in contractional tectonic *** different relation with the gravitational force in the different tectonic settings generates several relevant differences in the three main tectonic *** extensional tectonic settings,both in continental and oceanic rift zones generate normal fault-related earthquakes,i.e.,pro-gravity movements,or *** differ from the other tectonic setting because are marked by(i)lower energy and lower differential stress to activate faults with respect to strike-slip and contractional tectonics;(ii)lower maximum earthquake magnitude;(iii)a larger number of low magnitude earthquakes in extensional settings because the crust moves downward as soon as it can move,whereas contractional settings require larger accumulation of energy to move counter-gravity;(iv)consequently,the b-value of the Gutenberg-Richter is higher than 1 and the aftershocks are more numerous and last longer in extensional settings;(v)the downward motion of the hangingwall determines more diffuse cataclastic deformation with respect to the other tectonic s

Reliability based multiobjective optimization for design of structures subject to random vibrations

Based on a multiobjective approach whose objective function (OF) vector collects stochastic reliability performance and structural cost indices, a structural optimization criterion for mechanical systems subject to random vibrations is presented for supporting engineer’s design. This criterion differs from the most commonly used conventional optimum design criterion for random vibrating structure, which is based on minimizing displacement or acceleration variance of main structure responses, without considering explicitly required performances against failure. The proposed criterion can properly take into account the design-reliability required performances, and it becomes a more efficient support for structural engineering decision making. The multiobjective optimum (MOO) design of a tuned mass damper (TMD) has been developed in a typical seismic design problem, to control structural vibration induced on a multi-storey building structure excited by nonstationary base acceleration random process. A numerical example for a three-storey building is developed and a sensitivity analysis is carried out. The results are shown in a useful manner for TMD design decision support.

Multi-Scale Compliant Foot Designs and Fabrication for Use with a Spider-Inspired Climbing Robot

Climbing robots are of potential use for surveillance, inspection and exploration in different environments. In particular, the use of climbing robots for space exploration can allow scientists to explore environments too challenging for traditional wheeled designs. To adhere to surfaces, biomimetic dry adhesives based on gecko feet have been proposed. These biomimetic dry adhesives work by using multi-scale compliant mechanisms to make intimate contact with different surfaces and adhere by using Van der Waals forces. Fabrication of these adhesives has frequently been challenging however, due to the difficulty in combining macro, micro and nanoscale compliance. We present an all polymer foot design for use with a hexapod climbing robot and a fabrication method to improve reliability and yield. A high strength, low-modulus silicone, TC-5005, is used to form the foot base and microscale fibres in one piece by using a two part mold. A macroscale foot design is produced using a 3D printer to produce a base mold, while lithographic definition of microscale fibres in a thick photoresist forms the ＇hairs＇ of the polymer foot. The adhesion of the silicone fibres by themselves or attached to the macro foot is examined to determine best strategies for placement and removal of feet to maximize adhesion. Results demonstrate the successful integration of micro and macro compliant feet for use in climbing on a variety of surfaces.
