Impact of socioeconomic and health-related factors on consumption of homeopathic and natural remedies in Spain in 2006, 2011 and 2017

Objective: Complementary and alternative medicine use and type of use may be influenced by sociodemographic and economic determinants through which we could identify characteristics of patients with greater trend to use it. This paper aims to describe the changes in the consumption of homeopathic and natural remedies in Spain for three time points in order to discern changes in rate of consumption, associated factors and whether their use has been affected by a period of economic ***: This study utilized 2006, 2011 and 2017 cross-sectional data from the Spanish National Health Survey, a nationally representative survey of the population aged more than 15 years old and resident in Spain. Independent bivariate and multivariate descriptive analyses for each of the 3 years studied were ***: The rate of consumption of both homeopathic and natural remedies has decreased over the periods studied. In spite of this decrease, the consumer profile appears to remain stable over the three periods. The sociodemographic factors associated with their consumption were being female, being 30–64 years old, being separated/divorced, having higher education qualifications, being employed and belonging to a higher social class. psychiatric morbidity, chronic health problems such as pain, mental health problems or malignant tumors, and absence of major cardiovascular events were the clinical factors ***: It can be concluded that beyond the economic situation, the use of homeopathic and natural remedies obeys to the needs of the patients related to their state of health and the response they receive from the health system. It may be that women have different needs and expectations of the healthcare system and, given this breach of expectations, seek remedy to alleviate their needs outside the system and conventional medicine.

The hair follicle is a biological oscillator that alternates growth,regression,and rest phases driven by the sequential activation of the proliferation differentiation programs of resident stem cell *** activation of hair follicle stem cell niches and subsequent entry into the growing phase is mainly regulated by Wnt/β-catenin signalling,while regression and resting phases are mainly regulated by Tgf-β/Bmp/Smad activity.A major question still unresolved is the nature of the molecular switch that dictates the coordinated transition between both signalling *** we have focused on the role of Endoglin(Eng),a key co-receptor for members of the Tgf-β/Bmp family of growth *** an Eng haploinsufficient mouse model,we report that Eng is required to maintain a correct follicle cycling pattern and for an adequate stimulation of hair follicle stem cell *** further report thatβ-catenin binds to the Eng promoter depending on Bmp ***,we show thatβ-catenin interacts with Smad4 in a Bmp/Eng-dependent context and both proteins act synergistically to activate Eng promoter *** observations point to the existence of a growth/rest switching mechanism in the hair follicle that is based on an Eng-dependent feedback cross-talk between Wnt/β-catenin and Bmp/Smad signals.

AIM: To investigate the responses of TT virus (TTV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) to a long-term lamivudine ***: Sixteen patients infected with both TTV and HBV were treated with lamivudine 100 mg daily for 30 months. Blood samples were drawn at the beginning of the therapy and subsequently at month 3, 6, 9, 12 and *** TTV was quantified by real time pCR and serum HBV was detected by hybridization assay and nested polymerase chain ***: TTV infection was detected in 100 % of HBV-infected patients. Loss of serum TTV DNA after one year of treatment occurred in 1/16 (6 %) patients. At the end of therapy, TTV DNA was positive in 94 % of them. The decline of HBV viremia was evident at 3 months after therapy and the response rate was 31%, 44 %, 63 %, 50 % and 50 %at month 3, 6, 9, 12 and 30, ***: TTV replication is not sensitive to lamivudine and is highly prevalent in HBV-infected patients.

Several ectoparasites parasitise nestlings decreasing their body condition,growth and *** minimise any loss of fitness due to ectoparasites,birds have developed a wide variety of defence mechanisms,potentially including hatching *** to the Tasty Chick Hypothesis(TCH),the cost of parasitism would be reduced if ectoparasites tend to eat on less immunocompetent nestlings,typically the last-hatched chick in asynchronously hatched broods,as they are in poor body *** predictions of the TCH are that immune capacity is lower in smaller nestlings than in larger ones and that parasites should provoke a more negative effect on smaller ***,we test these predictions in a population of Blue Tits(Cyanistes caeruleus)whose broods are parasitised by Hen Fleas(Ceratophyllus gallinae)and Blowflies(protocalliphora azurea).We recorded the presence of both ectoparasites and analysed the immunocompetence(number of leucocytes per 10,000 erythrocytes and cutaneous immune response to phytohaemagglutinin)and body condition of smaller and larger nestlings within individual *** leucocyte count was higher in smaller nestlings than in larger ones,whereas the cutaneous immune response did not differ between smaller and larger *** nestlings,but not larger nestlings,had lower body mass when fleas were ***,by contrast,had no detectable negative effect on ***,our findings provide partial support to the *** immune capacity in smaller nestlings than in larger ones was not supported,but Hen Fleas seemed to negatively impact on smaller nestlings more than on larger ones.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and the safety of azathioprine (AZA) and buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) bylocalized application into HepG2 tumor in ***: Different hepatoma and colon carcinoma cell lines (HepG2, HuH7, Chang liver, LoVo, RKO, SW-48, SW-480) were grown in minimal essencial medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum and 1% antibiotic/antimycotic solution and maintained in a humidified 37 ℃ incubator with 5% CO2. These cells were pretreated with BSO for 24 h and then with AZA for different times. We examined the effects of this combination on some proteins and on cellular death. We also studied the eff icacy and the safety of AZA (6 mg/kg per day) and BSO (90 mg/kg per day) in HepG2 tumor growth in vivo using athymic mice. We measured safety by serological markers such as aminotransferases and creatine ***: The in vitro studies revealed a new mechanism of action for the AZA plus BSO combination in the cancer cells compared with other thiopurines (6-mercaptopurine, 6-methylmercaptopurine, 6-thioguanine and 6-methylthioguanine) in combination with BSO. The cytotoxic effect of AZA plus BSO in HepG2 cells resulted from necroptosis induction in a mitochondrial-dependent manner. From kinetic studies we suggest that glutathione (GSH) depletion stimulates c-Jun amino-terminal kinase and Bax translocation in HepG2 cells with subsequent deregulation of mitochondria (cytochrome c release, loss of membrane potential), and proteolysis activation leading to loss of membrane integrity, release of lactate dehydrogenase and DNA degradation. Some of this biochemical and cellular changes could be reversed by N-acetylcysteine (a GSH replenisher). In vivo studies showed that HepG2 tumor growth was inhibited when AZA was combined with ***: Our studies suggest that a combination of AZA plus BSO could be useful for localizedtreatment of hepatocellular carcinoma as in the currently used transarterial chemoembolization method.

BACKGROUND Research concerning postoperative outcomes of confirmed coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)patients revealed unfavorable postoperative results with increased morbidity,pulmonary complications and *** reports have suggested that COVID-19 is associated with more aggressive presentation of acute *** aim of the present study is to describe the perioperative assessment and postoperative outcomes of ten patients with confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection with concomitant acute cholecystitis who underwent *** SUMMARY We report a total of 10 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients with concomitant acute cholecystitis that underwent *** patients were males,the mean age was 47.1 *** patients had moderate acute cholecystitis,and one patient had severe acute *** patients were treated with urgent/early laparoscopic *** the parkland grading scale,two patients received a parkland grade of 3,two patients received a parkland grade of 4,and six patients received a parkland grade of *** patients required a bail-out *** patients developed biliary leakage and required endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with biliary *** surgery,five patients developed acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)and required intensive care unit(ICU)*** patient died after cholecystectomy due to ARDS *** mean total length of stay(LOS)was 18.2 *** histopathology demonstrated transmural necrosis(n=5),vessel obliteration with ischemia(n=3),perforation(n=3),and acute peritonitis(n=10).CONCLUSION COVID-19 patients with acute cholecystitis had difficult cholecystectomies,high rates of ICU admission,and a prolonged LOS.
