Impacts of oak deforestation and rainfed cultivation on soil redistribution processes across hillslopes using ^(137)Cs techniques

Background:As one of the main components of land-use change,deforestation is considered the greatest threat to global environmental diversity with possible irreversible environmental ***,one example could be the impacts of land-use changes from oak forests into agricultural ecosystems,which may have detrimental impacts on soil mobilization across ***,to date,scarce studies are assessing these impacts at different slope positions and soil depths,shedding light on key geomorphological ***:In this research,the Caesium-137(^(137)Cs)technique was applied to evaluate soil redistribution and soil erosion rates due to the effects of these above-mentioned land-use *** achieve this goal,we select a representative area in the Lordegan district,central Iran.^(137)Cs depth distribution profiles were established in four different hillslope positions after converting natural oak forests to rainfed *** each hillslope,soil samples from three depths(0–10,10–20,and 20–50 cm)and in four different slope positions(summit,shoulder,backslope,and footslope)were taken in three transects of about 20m away from each *** activity of ^(137)Cs was determined in all the soil samples(72 soil samples)by a gamma *** addition,some physicochemical properties and the magnetic susceptibility(MS)of soil samples were ***:Erosion rates reached 51.1 t·ha^(−1)·yr^(−1) in rainfed farming,whereas in the natural forest,the erosion rate was 9.3 t·ha^(−1)·yr^(−1).Magnetic susceptibility was considerably lower in the cultivated land(χhf=43.5×10^(−8)m^(3)·kg^(−1))than in the natural forest(χhf=55.1×10^(−8)m^(3)·kg^(−1)).The lower soil erosion rate in the natural forest land indicated significantly higher MS in all landform positions except at the summit one,compared to that in the rainfed farming *** shoulder and summit positions were the most erodible hillslope positions in the natural forest and rainfed farming,res

Endomycorrhizal Fungi and <i>Opuntia ficus-indica</i>Seed Germination on a Lunar Regolith Simulant

Endomycorrhizal fungi play an important role in the survival of plants on poor soils. Planting seeds into lunar soil at a lunar colony will be a challenge for seeds of any plant. The seeds will need a special microbial “tool kit” that will help them germinate and the young seedlings establish themselves. In this study, seeds of the prickly pear cactus, Opuntia ficus-indica, were chosen to examine the presence of fungus spores in the soil, inside the seeds and after germination in the rhizosphere, roots and other tissues of the young seedlings. The nutrient poor lunar regolith simulant JSC-1A was used as autoclaved or untreated growth medium. The mycorrhizal fungus Trichoderma viride was predominantly identified on the roots of new seedlings. This fungus also demonstrated the strongest effect on the germination rate of the seeds in comparison with other fungi isolated from the rhizosphere of Opuntia plants. T. viride was not detected within seeds and also not within seedlings, besides the root tips, whereas an arbuscular mycorrhizal Glomus species was seed-borne and present throughout most of the seedling. A close association between T. viride and a Glomus species associated with O. ficus-indica is demonstrated through light microscopic and electron microscopic images of the outside and inside root tips of the seedlings.

Organic Reserves in ropical Grasses under Grazing

Inadequate management in recent times has been considered the main factor contributing to pasture degradation. A major reason for this is related to gross errors of grazing management as a consequence of the lack of knowledge of ecophysiological limits of forage. This review aimed to approach the importance of organic reserves for grasses under grazing. Therefore, the predominant effect of animal grazing is the reduction of leaf area which impacts on carbohydrate and nitrogen reserves and consequently the growth of tillers, leaves and roots. Grass growth after defoliation is related to organic reserves and rate of photosynthesis. The latter is affected by the level of canopy light interception of and by the reminiscent leaf area index. When grazing management is carried out with respect to the physiological limits of grass growth, the rate of dry matter accumulation will be quick and constant. In this aspect, grazing management consists of seeking an efficient balance between plant growth and consumption which will reflect on animal productivity. Therefore, a balance point among frequency and intensity of defoliation must be found to achieve greater animal production concerning the ecophysiological limits of the forage plants. So the challenge will be to find a balance between frequency and intensity of grazing to achieve greater production of animals respecting the eco-physiological limits of forage plants for each forage grass individually.

A comparative study of the morphometry of sperm head components in cattle, sheep, and pigs with a computer-assisted fluorescence method

The aim of this study was to compare the sperm nuclear and acrosomal morphometry of three species of domestic artiodactyls; cattle （Bos taurus）, sheep （Ovis aries）, and pigs （Sus scrofa）. Semen smears of twenty ejaculates from each species were fixed and labeled with a propidium iodide-Pisum sativum agglutinin （PI/PSA） combination. Digital images of the sperm nucleus, acrosome, and whole sperm head were captured and analyzed. The use of the PI/PSA combination and CASA-Morph fluorescence-based method allowed the capture, morphometric analysis, and differentiation of most sperm nuclei, acrosomes and whole heads, and the assessment of acrosomal integrity with a high precision in the three species studied. For the size of the head and nuclear area, the relationship between the three species may be summarized as bull 〉 ram 〉 boar. However, for the other morphometric parameters （length, width, and perimeter）, there were differences in the relationships between species for sperm nuclei and whole sperm heads. Bull sperm acrosomes were clearly smaller than those in the other species studied and covered a smaller proportion of the sperm head. The acrosomal morphology, small in the bull, large and broad in the sheep, and large, long, and with a pronounced equatorial segment curve in the boar, was species-characteristic. It was concluded that there are clear variations in the size and shape of the sperm head components between the three species studied, the acrosome being the structure showing the most variability, allowing a clear distinction of the spermatozoa of each species.

Life cycle and nymphal feeding of Besdolus ravizzarum （Plecoptera： Perlodidae）, a threatened stonefly

We have studied some aspects of Besdolus ravizzarum biology in the Apen- nines. This stonefly has a very localized distribution in southeastern France and northern Italy. This species is considered threatened. For this reason it is especially relevant to improve knowledge about its natural history, previously unknown. Despite the large size of nymphs, this species shows a univoltine life cycle. The growth is slow but uniform from October to April or May when the short flight period occurs. The analysis of the gut con- tents indicates this species is a predator, feeding mainly on Baetidae and Chironomidae. It is notable that the development of this carnivorous species through cold periods coincides with the season with higher richness and density of potential prey in Apennine streams. Further studies are needed to improve knowledge of the distribution of the species and to start planning effective conservation efforts.

Shear-flexural strength mechanical model for the design and assessment of reinforced concrete beams subjected to point or distributed loads

A mechanical model recently developed for the shear strength of slender reinforced concrete beams with and without shear reinforcement is presented and extended to elements with uniformly distributed loads, specially focusing on practical design and assessment in this paper. The shear strength is considered to be the sum of the shear transferred by the concrete compression chord, along the crack, due to residual tensile and frictional stresses, by the stirrups and, if they exist, by the longitudinal reinforcement. Based on the principles of structural mechanics simple expressions have been derived separately for each shear transfer action and for their interaction at ultimate limit state. The predictions of the model have been compared to those obtained by using the EC2, MC2010 and ACI 318-08 provisions and they fit very well the available experimental results from the recently published ACI-DAfStb databases of shear tests on slender reinforced concrete beams with and without stirrups. Finally, a detailed application example has been presented, obtaining each contributing component to the shear strength and the assumed shape and position of the critical crack.

AIM:To determine whether or not the use of antioxidant supplementation aids in the prevention of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography ***:A systematic review of randomized controlled trials(RCTs) was made to evaluate the preventive effect of prophylactic antioxidant supplementation in post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis(PEP).The inclusion criteria included:acute post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis in adults; randomized clinical trials with the use of any antioxidant as an intervention compared with placebo,to reduce *** outcome measure was the incidence and severity of *** RCTs involving 3110 patients since 1999 *** antioxidants used were selenite,β-carotene,and pentoxifylline(each one in one trial),N-acetylcysteine(NAC) in three trials,and allopurinol in six *** group of patients treated with NAC received different doses; either oral or intravenous,and allopurinol-treated patients received five different oral doses in two different administration *** results are expressed with raw numbers,proportions,as well as mean and standard *** incidence of pancreatitis between groups was analyzed with Pearson's χ2 test or Fisher's exact test(F).The main outcome is expressed as relative risks and 95%***:The incidence of pancreatitis in all antioxidant treatment groups was 8.6%,whereas it was 9.7% in the control *** antioxidants used were selenite,β-carotene,and pentoxifylline(each one in one trial),NAC in three trials,and allopurinol in six *** allopurinol trials,three different dosifications were used; two trials reported a low dosage(of less than 400 mg),two trials reported a moderate dose(600 mg) and the remaining two employed higher doses(more than 900 mg).Supplementation was not associated with a significant reduction in the incidence of PEP [relative risk(RR) = 0.93; 95%CI:0.82-1.06; P = 0.28].In addition,the incid

Role of minimally invasive surgery in complex adnexal tumours and ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common causes of cancerrelated death in women. Adnexal masses are frequently diagnosed during reproductive age and often require surgical removal. The risk of malignancy when dealing with a complex adnexal mass should be defned prior to surgery and several scoring systems may be useful for this purpose. Laparoscopic management of ovarian tumours allows a minimally invasive approach with respect to several oncological assumptions. In the last decade concerns have been raised regarding the risk of cyst rupture and tumour spillage as a con-sequence of the laparoscopic technique itself both in early and advanced stages of ovarian cancer. Although limited data have been reported in the literature on the use of minimally invasive techniques in ovarian cancer, the clear benefits of this approach must be balanced with the potential hazards in different clinical situations. Laparoscopic staging in borderline tumours and presumed early-stage ovarian cancer performed by a laparoscopic oncologist seems to be safe and effec-tive when compared to laparotomy. The precise role of laparoscopy in patients with more advanced cancer is still to be defned, and the risk of suboptimal surgery should never outweigh the potential benefits of mini-mally invasive surgery. Thus, a tailored prediction of optimal laparoscopic debulking is mandatory in these patients.
