Morphometric and kinematic sperm subpopulations in split ejaculates of normozoospermic men

This study was designed to analyze the sperm kinematic and morphometric subpopulations in the different fractions of the ejaculate in normozoospermic men. Ejaculates from eight normozoospermic men were collected by masturbation in three fractions after 3-5 days of sexual abstinence. Analyses of sperm motility by computer-assisted sperm analysis （CAsA-Mot）, and of sperm morphometry by computer-assisted sperm morphometry analysis （CAsA-Morph） using fluorescence were performed. Clustering and discriminant procedures were performed to identify sperm subpopulations in the kinematic and morphometric data obtained. Clustering procedures resulted in the classification of spermatozoa into three kinematic subpopulations （slow with low ALH [35.6% of all motile spermatozoa], with circular trajectories [32.0%], and rapid with high ALH [32.4%]）, and three morphometric subpopulations （large-round [33.9% of all spermatozoa], elongated [32.0%], and small [34.10%]）. The distribution of kinematic sperm subpopulations was different among ejaculate fractions （P 〈 0.001）, with higher percentages of spermatozoa exhibiting slow movements with low ALH in the second and third portions, and with a more homogeneous distribution of kinematic sperm subpopulations in the first portion. The distribution of morphometric sperm subpopulations was also different among ejaculate fractions （P〈 0.001）, with more elongated spermatozoa in the first, and of small spermatozoa in the third, portion. It is concluded that important variations in the distribution of kinematic and morphometric sperm subpopulations exist between ejaculate fractions, with possible functional implications.

Pharmacogenomics in colorectal cancer: The first step for individualized-therapy

Interindividual differences in the toxicity and response to anticancer therapies are currently observed in practically all available treatment regimens. A goal of cancer therapy is to predict patient response and toxicity to drugs in order to facilitate the individualization of patient treatment. Identification of subgroups of patients that differ in their prognosis and response to treatment could help to identify the best available drug therapy according the genetic profile. several mechanisms have been suggested to contribute to chemo-therapeutic drug resistance: amplification or overexpression of membrane transporters, changes in cellular proteins involved in detoxification or in DNA repair, apoptosis and activation of oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is regarded as intrinsically resistant to chemotherapy. several molecular markers predictive of CRC therapy have been included during the last decade but their results in different studies complicate their application in practical clinical. The simultaneous testing of multiple markers predictive of response could help to identify more accurately the true role of these polymorphisms in CRC therapy. This review analyzes the role of genetic variants in genes involved in the action mechanisms of the drugs used at present in colorectal cancer.

Caatinga is a typical biome of Brazil's semiarid regions and subject to climate *** is needed on the relation of its features to climate *** study analyzed the infl uence of rainfall and its irregularities in open and dense woody Caatinga *** curves were generated by means of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)time profiles in the Grota do Angico Conservation Unit study area in sergipe *** data from 2000 to 2018 were collected and phenological curves generated using various estimate methods that produced the following variables:[start of season,end of season,peak of season position,length of season,mean growing season and maximum seasonal].Rainfall showed a standard intra-annual behavior,with inter-annual variations related to irregularities infl uencing Caatinga *** Caatinga vegetation had higher values of NDVI in all periods,even in anomalous years compared to open Caatinga,in addition to having longer leaf coverage over the year,with an anticipated start and a more extended seasonal *** analysis of the rainfall regime made it possible to assess its infl uence on the Caatinga and phenological profiles proved to be fundamental to understand periods of physiological change of open and dense *** results indicate that dense Caatinga maintains physiological activity longer,which may be associated with greater moisture maintenance in a semiarid *** addition,because it has a greater leaf cover for longer periods,the soil may be preserved and maintain its characteristics longer,reducing the effects of *** results may be associated with the type of forest management and conservation in this *** total or partial suppression of individual remnants of Caatinga should be avoided,since the most open areas have lower photosynthetic capacity,affected to a considerable extent from the effects of adverse climatic ***,open Caatinga has a reduced cap

FedIDs:a federated cloud storage architecture and satellite image delivery service for building dependable geospatial platforms

Earth observation satellites produce large amounts of images/data that not only must be processed and preserved in reliable geospatial platforms but also efficiently disseminated among partners/researchers for creating derivative products through collaborative *** can face up this challenge in a cost-effective manner by using cloud ***,outages and violations of integrity/confidentiality associated to this technology could *** article presents FedIDs,a suite of cloud-based components for building dependable geospatial *** Fed component enables organizations to build shared geospatial data infrastructure through federation of independent cloud resources to withstand outages,whereas IDs avoids violations of integrity/confidentiality of images/data in sharing information and collaboration workflows.A FedIDs prototype,deployed in spain and Mexico,was evaluated through a study case based on a satellite imagery captured by a Mexican antenna and another based on a satellite imagery of a European observation *** acquisition,storage and sharing of images among users of the federation,the exchange of images between Mexican and spanish sites and outage scenarios were *** evaluation revealed the feasibility,reliability and efficiency of FedIDs,in comparison with available solutions,in terms of performance,storage consume and integrity/confidentiality when sharing images/data in collaborative scenarios.

The Caatinga biome is an important ecosystem in the semi-arid region of *** has significantly degraded due to human activities and is currently a region undergoing ***,monitoring the variation in the Caatinga biome has become essential for its sustainable ***,traditional methods for estimating aboveground biomass(AGB)are time-consuming and *** sensing,such as optical and radar imaging,can estimate and correlate with ***,radar imaging is still a novelty to be applied in estimating the AGB of this biome,which is an area with little ***,this study aimed to use sentinel-1 images to estimate the AGB of the Caatinga biome in sergipe state(northeastern Brazil)and to verify its influencing *** sample plots(30 m×30 m)were selected,and the stems of individuals with a circumference at breast height(1.3 m above the ground)equal to or greater than 6.0 cm were measured,and the AGB through an allometric equation was *** sentinel-1 images from 3 different periods(green,intermediate,and dry periods)were used to consider the phenological conditions of the Caatinga *** the pre-processing and extraction of attributes(co-polarized VV(vertical transmit and vertical receive),cross-polarized VH(vertical transmit and horizontal receive),and band ratio VH/VV backscatter,radar vegetation index,dual polarization synthetic aperture radar(sAR)vegetation index(DPsVI),entropy(H),and alpha angle(α))were performed with sentinel’s Application *** attributes were used to estimate the AGB through simple and multiple linear regressions and evaluated by the coefficients of determination(R2),correlation(r),and root mean squared error(RMsE).The results showed that the attributes individually had little ability to estimate the AGB of the Caatinga biome in the three *** with multiple regression,we found that the intermediate period presented the equation with the best

Dear Editor, Polyorchidism refers to the presence of more than two testicles. Blasius described it for the first time in 1670 as an incidental finding in an autopsy, while Lane was the one who performed the first histological description of a supernumerary testis in 1895.1,2 Before imaging diagnosis techniques, this condition could only be verified under surgical exploration. Nowadays, current imaging techniques have increased the number of diagnosis of this anatomical variation. On the other hand, there is still a certain group of physicians who use histological analysis as the unioue way to diagnosis.

Toxicity and antifeedant activity of essential oils from three aromatic plants grown in Colombia against Euprosterna elaeasa and Acharia fusca(Lepidoptera:Limacodidae)

Objective:To determine the biological effects of essential oils(EOs) isolated from Cymbopogon iiardus,Cymbopogon Jlexuosus and Cvrnbopogon marlinii grown in Colombia against two Lepidoptera larvae,common pests in the oil ***:specimens were captured in the field and the antifeedant activity and dermal contact lethality of EOs were measured against Acharia fusca and Euprosterna elaeasa(Lepidoptera:***) at various concentrations 0.002-0.600 μL/cm^3 and 0.002-8 μL/g,***:All EOs exhibited strong antifeedant and toxicity activity toward Acharia fusca and Euprosterna elaeasa *** marlinii oil was llie most active againsl both pest insect species,although all tested EOs were better than the synthetic;repellent IR535 on both ***:Colombian EOs have potential for integrated pest management programs in the oil palm industry.

Innovative therapeutics for inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, which clinically present as one of two disorders, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Mainstays of drug treatments for IBD include aminosalicylates, corticosteroids and immunosuppressants such as azathioprine, methotrexate and cyclosporin. Advances in basic research of the pathophysiological process in IBD have been applied to generate a variety of new therapeutics targeting at different levels of the inflammatory processes. New therapies are classified as: (1) Anti-TNFα antibodies; (2) Recombinant cytokines; (3) selective adhesion blockade; (4) Growth factors; (5) Innate immunostimulation; (6) Nucleic acid based therapies; (7) Gene therapy; (8) Autologous bone-marrow transplantation; (9) Helminths and (10) Extracorporeal immunomodulation. All treatments have the potential to provide more effective and safe treatment for IBD.
