To condemn a conglomerate merger for the foreclosure effect of post-merger activities, one should examine the anticipated conduct against the same liability rules under the law of agreement and the law of abuse of dominance as if the conduct has been materialized Given the inherent uncertainty of pre-merger assessment, it requires a high standard of proof to satisfy the adjudicator that the merger in question would lead to anticompetitive effect in all the circumstances. Conglomerate merger, which will reinforce market concentration or increase entry barriers, should be stringently scrutinized. Saying so, the pro-efficiency effects of conglomerate merger are appreciated One shouM not take it for granted that agglomeration will be restrained through conglomerate merger control.

Combined chemical analyses and biological measurements were utilized to investigate potential toxicological effects and possible mechanisms involved in risk assessment of rare earth elements （REEs） on Viciafaba L. seedlings, which were hydroponically cultivated and exposed to various concentrations of lanthanum （La） for 15 days. The results showed that La contents in both the solution and roots increased with the increase of extraneous La, contributing to hormetic dose responses of superoxide dismutase （SOD）, catalase （CAT）, guaiacol peroxidase （GPX）, ascorbate peroxidase （APX） and endoprotease （EP） isozymes activities, and HSP 70 production enhanced at low doses but suppressed at higher doses of La. These physiological responses constituted antioxidant and detoxification systems against La-induced oxidative stress. The elevated La levels also contributed to oxidatively modified proteins, which were most responsible for subsequent cell death and growth retardation of the roots. By combination of hormetic and traditional threshold dose levels, the threshold dose range was deduced to be 108-195 μg La/g dry weight in the roots, corresponding to 0.90-3.12 mg/L of soluble La in the culture solution. It suggests that persistent applications of REEs may lead to potential ecological risk in the environment.

Background Previous studies have shown evidence of health-related risk behaviors among women who have sex with women （WSW）, such as sex with men, multiple bisexual partners, and drug use. Women who have sex with women have also been known to avoid routine physical examinations and conceal their same-sex history from physicians, which can affect their ability to receive an accurate diagnosis and treatment. No previous research has targeted women who have sex with women in China. We sought to describe women who have sex with women in China and explore risk factors for their reproductive tract infections （RTI）/sexually transmitted infections （STI）. Methods Participants were recruited through outreach in venues and online for a cross-sectional study. Data were collected using interviews and laboratory tests. Results We recruited 224 women who have sex with women. In the year preceding their participation in the study, 92% （206/224） of women reported sexual relations with women. The RTI rates were： gonorrhea （15.8%）, chlamydia （3.5%）, syphilis （0.5%）, bacterial vaginosis （14.4%）, hepatitis B virus （HBV）（0.9%）, hepatitis C virus （HCV）（0.5%）, and candidiasis （6.9%）. No HIV or herpes simplex virus （HSV） positive cases were detected. Factors associated with gonorrhea infection were non-Beijing local residency （odds ratio （OR）=2.1, 95% confidence interval （C/）： 1.2-3.8） and genital-genital contact （OR=3.1, 95% CI： 1.3-7.2）; factors associated with curable STI （excluding bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, HBV and HCV） were non-Beijing local residency （OR=1.9; 95% CI： 1.2-3.0） and bleeding during or after sex （OR=18.1; 95% CI： 5.2-62.6）; and the factor associated with RTI （including all the infections tested） was bleeding during or after sex （OR=37.8, 95% CI： 11.2-127.4）. Conclusions Behaviors that may cause RTI/STI exist among Chinese women who have sex with women. Researchers should consider these behaviors when planninq correspondin.q prevention and interventions.

A COMPARISON OF EASTERN AND WESTERN HONG KONG PHYTOPLANKTON FROM WEEKLY SAMPLES (1997-1999)

Weekly phytoplankton samples were taken from western Hong Kong (Lamma) from Jan. 1997 to Dec. 1999 and from Port Shelter in Eastern Hong Kong from January 1998 to December 1999. During that time diatom blooms occurred repeatedly at both sites but never in synchrony. One species would bloom at one site and then weeks later it or another species would bloom at the other site; while the 1998 red tide of the mucus producing dinoflagellate Gymnodinium mikimotoi occurred at both sites. It first occurred at the Port Shelter site in March and did not appear at the Lamma site until April. With the single exception of this species, no other dinoflagellate reached bloom concentrations at the Lamma site. In addition, dinoflagellate abundance at the Lamma site was significantly lower (P <0.05) than that at the Port Shelter site. This was correlated with a significantly higher turbidity (i.e. low Secchi transparency) and higher turbulence (stronger currents) at the Lamma site. Annual variation in surface temperature correlated with total surface phytoplankton abundance at both our sample sites. Phytoplankton abundance increased in spring as water temperatures warmed. In fall, as surface water temperatures began to decline and the monsoon rains became less frequent there was a reduction in phytoplankton abundance associated with the reduction in temperature and light. Because so many variables co-occur with temperature (e.g. the amount of rainfall, light intensity and light duration etc.) it is not possible to cite temperature as the causal factor associated weth controlling phytoplankton abundance at our two sample sites. Our data support the rather controversial notion that percentage-wise, there are relatively more harmful bloom forming species in nutrient-rich coastal waters than there are in the world’s oceans. 16% of the dinoflagellate species and 10.3% of the diatom species observed at our two sample sites were classed as harmful.
