Effect of solution condition on hydroxyapatite formation in evaluating bioactivity of B2O3 containing 45S5 bioactive glasses

In vitro evaluation of anti-acetylcholinesterase and free radical scavenging potential of leaf extracts of some selected medicinal plants

Objective: To evaluate the phytochemical present in various solvent extracts from leaves of Ocimum sanctum(L.), Swertia chirayita(L.), Butea monosperma(Lam.) and Stevia rebaudiana(Bert.) as well as antioxidant and anticholinergic activities employing different in vitro models. Methods: Total phenol content of diethyl ether, chloroform and methanolic extracts obtained from leaves of different medicinal plants was determined by Folin-Ciocalteau's spectrophotometric method. Moreover, antioxidant and anticholinergic studies were conducted by four different in vitro methods which included diphenyl picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging, 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbezoline-6-sulphonic acid), reducing activity by ferrous reduced antioxidant power and anti-acetylcholinesterase assay, in order to ensure pharmacological potential of the plants. Results: The methanolic leaf extract of Ocimum sanctum showed the highest total phenol content which was(21.13±1.04) GAE/g DW and antioxidant activities compared to other plants with the IC50 value of 40.43 μg/mL in diphenyl picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay and 53.5 μg/mL in 2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbezoline-6-sulphonic acid) assay as well as metal ion reduced by(78.22±0.38) TE/g DW in ferrous reduced antioxidant power assay. The inhibition percentage of the anti-acetylcholinesterase assay was(94.22±0.26)%. Conclusions: The results of our current study show that Ocimum sanctum leaf is the most significant source of phytochemicals that possesses antioxidant and anticholinergic properties. However, further investigation on isolation and characterization of active compound which is responsible for the pharmacological potential is needed.

Green roofs have become a common method to increase water retention on-site in urban ***,the long-term water quality of runoff from green roofs is poorly *** study evaluated the water quality of stormwater runoff from a regular(non-vegetated)roof,a green roof installed 6 months previously,and a green roof installed 6 years ago in Portland,*** of runoff were taken during every rain event for 10 months,and analyzed for total phosphorus(TP),phosphate(PO_(4)^(3-)),total nitrogen(TN),nitrate(NO_(3)^(-)),ammonia(NH_(3)),copper(Cu),and zinc(Zn).Runoff from the green roofs had higher concentrations of TP and PO_(4)^(3-)and lower concentrations of Zn compared to the regular *** TP concentrations from the 6-year old roof and 6-month old roof were 6.3 and 14.6 times higher,respectively,than concentrations from the regular roof,and average PO_(4)^(3-)concentrations from the 6-year old roof and 6-month old roof were 13.5 and 26.6 times higher,respectively,compared to the regular *** from the 6-month old green roof had higher concentrations of TP and PO_(4)^(3-)than the 6-year old green roof during the wet season,but lower concentrations during the dry *** 6-month old green roof installations where receiving waters are sensitive or impaired may need additional treatment methods to reduce phosphorus *** green roofs age,water retention decreases and phosphorus leaching increases during the dry season.

DNA recovery and analysis from skeletal material in modern forensic contexts

The generation of a DNA profile from skeletal remains is an important part of the identifica-tion process in both mass disaster and unidentified person cases. Since bones and teeth are often the only biological materials remaining after exposure to environmental conditions, intense heat, certain traumatic events and in cases where a significant amount of time has passed since the death of the individual, the ability to purify large quantities of informative DNA from these hard tissues would be beneficial. Since sampling the hard tissues for gen-etic analysis is a destructive process, it is important to understand those environmental and intrinsic factors that contribute to DNA preservation. This will serve as a brief introduction to these topics, since skeletal sampling strategies and molecular taphonomy have been dis-cussed in depth elsewhere. Additionally advances in skeletal DNA extraction and analysis will be discussed. Currently there is great variation in the DNA isolation methods used by laboratories to purify DNA from the hard tissues;however, a standardized set of short tan-dem repeat (STR) loci is analyzed by many US laboratories to allow for comparisons across samples and jurisdictions. Recent advances have allowed for the generation of DNA profiles from smaller quantities of template DNA and have expanded the number of loci analyzed for greater discriminatory power and predictions regarding the geographic ancestry and phenotype of the individual. Finally, utilizing databases and expanding the number of com-parison samples will be discussed in light of their role in the identification process.

Co-occurrence of Cell Lines, Basal Media and Supplementation in the Biomedical Research Literature

Purpose: The use of in vitro cell culture and experimentation is a cornerstone of biomedical research, however, more attention has recently been given to the potential consequences of using such artificial basal medias and undefined supplements. As a first step towards better understanding and measuring the impact these systems have on experimental results, we use text mining to capture typical research practices and trends around cell ***/methodology/approach: To measure the scale of in vitro cell culture use, we have analyzed a corpus of 94,695 research articles that appear in biomedical research journals published in ScienceDirect from 2000–2018. Central to our investigation is the observation that studies using cell culture describe conditions using the typical sentence structure of cell line, basal media, and supplemented compounds. Here we tag our corpus with a curated list of basal medias and the Cellosaurus ontology using the Aho-Corasick algorithm. We also processed the corpus with Stanford CoreNLP to find nouns that follow the basal media, in an attempt to identify supplements used. Findings: Interestingly, we find that researchers frequently use DMEM even if a cell line's vendor recommends less concentrated media. We see long-tailed distributions for the usage of media and cell lines, with DMEM and RPMI dominating the media, and HEK293, HEK293 T, and HeLa dominating cell lines used. Research limitations: Our analysis was restricted to documents in ScienceDirect, and our text mining method achieved high recall but low precision and mandated manual inspection of many *** implications: Our findings document current cell culture practices in the biomedical research community, which can be used as a resource for future experimental ***/value: No other work has taken a text mining approach to surveying cell culture practices in biomedical research.

Mass-transfer studies of solid-base catalyst-aided CO_(2) absorption and solid-acid catalyst-aided CO_(2) desorption for CO_(2) capture in a pilot plant using aqueous solutions of MEA and blends of MEA-MDEA and BEA-AMP

Mass-transfer studies of catalyst-aided CO_(2) absorption and desorption were performed in a full-cycle,bench-scale pilot plant to improve CO_(2) absorption using 5M MEA,5M MEA-2M MDEA and 2M BEA-2M AMP.A solid-base catalyst,K/MgO,and an acid catalyst,HZSM-5,were used to facilitate absorption and desorption,*** and desorption mass-transfer performance was presented in terms of the overall mass-transfer coefficient of the gas side(KGav)and liquid side(K_(L)a_(v)),*** non-catalytic runs,the highest K_(G)a_(V) and K_(L)a_(V) were 0.086 Kmol m^(3).*** and 0.7851 hr for 2M BEA-2M AMP *** results showed 38.7% KGav and 23.6% K_(L)a_(v) increase for 2M BEA-2M AMP with only HZSM-5 catalyst in desorber and a 95% K_(G)a_(V) and 45% K_(L)a_(V) increase for both K/MgO catalyst and HZSM-5 *** was attributed to the role of K/MgO in bonding loosely with CO_(2) and making it available for the amine reaction.

External stimuli controlled multiferroic charge-transfer crystals

Multiferroic charge-transfer crystals have drawn significant interest due to their simultaneous dipolar and spin ordering. Numerous theoretical and experimental studies have shown that the molecular stacking between donor and acceptor complexes plays an important role in tuning charge-transfer enabled multifunctionality. Herein, we show that the charge-transfer interactions can be controlled by the segregated stack, consisting of polythiophene donor- and fuUerene acceptor-based all-conjugated block copolymers. Room temperature magnetic field effects, ferroelectricity, and anisotropic magnetism are observed in charge-transfer crystals, which can be further controlled by photoexcitation and charge doping. Furthermore, the charge-transfer segregated stack crystals demonstrate external stimuli controlled polarization and magnetization, which opens up their multifunctional applications for all-organic multiferroics.

Large-diameter trees and deadwood correspond with belowground ectomycorrhizal fungal richness

Background: Large-diameter trees have an outsized influence on aboveground forest dynamics, composition, and structure. Although their influence on aboveground processes is well studied, their role in shaping belowground fungal communities is largely unknown. We sought to test if (i) fungal community spatial structure matched aboveground forest structure;(ii) fungal functional guilds exhibited differential associations to aboveground trees, snags, and deadwood;and (iii) that large-diameter trees and snags have a larger influence on fungal community richness than smaller-diameter trees. We used MiSeq sequencing of fungal communities collected from soils in a spatially intensive survey in a portion of Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah, USA. We used random forest models to explore the spatial structure of fungal communities as they relate to explicitly mapped trees and deadwood distributed across 1.15 ha of a 15.32-ha mapped subalpine forest. Results: We found 6,177 fungal amplicon sequence variants across 117 sequenced samples. Tree diameter, dead-wood presence, and tree species identity explained more than twice as much variation (38.7% vs. 10.4%) for ectomy-corrhizal composition and diversity than for the total or saprotrophic fungal communities. Species identity and dis-tance to the nearest large-diameter tree (≥ 40.2 cm) were better predictors of fungal richness than were the identity and distance to the nearest tree. Soil nutrients, topography, and tree species differentially influenced the composition and diversity of each fungal guild. Locally rare tree species had an outsized influence on fungal community richness. Conclusions: These results highlight that fungal guilds are differentially associated with the location, size, and species of aboveground trees. Large-diameter trees are implicated as drivers of belowground fungal diversity, particularly for ectomycorrhizal fungi.
