Large-diameter trees and deadwood correspond with belowground ectomycorrhizal fungal richness

Background: Large-diameter trees have an outsized influence on aboveground forest dynamics, composition, and structure. Although their influence on aboveground processes is well studied, their role in shaping belowground fungal communities is largely unknown. We sought to test if (i) fungal community spatial structure matched aboveground forest structure;(ii) fungal functional guilds exhibited differential associations to aboveground trees, snags, and deadwood;and (iii) that large-diameter trees and snags have a larger influence on fungal community richness than smaller-diameter trees. We used MiSeq sequencing of fungal communities collected from soils in a spatially intensive survey in a portion of Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah, USA. We used random forest models to explore the spatial structure of fungal communities as they relate to explicitly mapped trees and deadwood distributed across 1.15 ha of a 15.32-ha mapped subalpine forest. results: We found 6,177 fungal amplicon sequence variants across 117 sequenced samples. Tree diameter, dead-wood presence, and tree species identity explained more than twice as much variation (38.7% vs. 10.4%) for ectomy-corrhizal composition and diversity than for the total or saprotrophic fungal communities. Species identity and dis-tance to the nearest large-diameter tree (≥ 40.2 cm) were better predictors of fungal richness than were the identity and distance to the nearest tree. Soil nutrients, topography, and tree species differentially influenced the composition and diversity of each fungal guild. Locally rare tree species had an outsized influence on fungal community richness. Conclusions: These results highlight that fungal guilds are differentially associated with the location, size, and species of aboveground trees. Large-diameter trees are implicated as drivers of belowground fungal diversity, particularly for ectomycorrhizal fungi.

The relationship between oxidative degradation and ammonia emission of carbon capture amines based on their chemical structures

This work investigates the effect of chemical structural positioning of different functional groups in 29 amines covering primary,secondary and tertiary alkanolamines as well as multi-alkylamines and cyclic amines on both amine degradation and ammonia(NH_(3))emissions during post-combustion amine-based carbon dioxide *** results helped to elucidate possible relation-ships between degradation and emissions as related to the chemical structure of the *** results showed that longer alkyl chain lengths in multi-alkylamines caused a more drastic decrease in both degradation and NH_(3) emissions followed by secondary *** decrease in those activities for primary and tertiary alkanolamines as well as cyclic amines was low and more so for NH_(3) *** contrast,the increase in hydroxyl groups in secondary alkanolamines caused a drastic increase in degrad-ation and NH_(3) *** the other hand,having more hydroxyl groups in sterically hindered primary and tertiary alkanolamines caused a more drastic decrease in degradation and a smaller decrease in NH_(3) emissions due to the steric hindrance within their *** increase in the number of amino groups in an amine caused an increase in both degradation and NH_(3) emission rates because these provided the reactive sites for the formation of free *** effect was not as large in alkyl-cyclic amines as in multi-alkylamines due to the ability of the former to resist oxidative ***,branched alkyl groups between amino and hydroxyl groups more drastically increased both the degradation and NH_(3) emission activities than branched alkyl groups located at the nitrogen atom.

Vonoprazan-amoxicillin dual regimen with Saccharomyces boulardii as a rescue therapy for Helicobacter pylori:Current perspectives and implications

Yu et al’s study in the World Journal of Gastroenterology(2023)introduced a novel regimen of Vonoprazan-amoxicillin dual therapy combined with Saccharomyces boulardii(***)for the rescue therapy against Helicobacter pylori(***),a pathogen responsible for peptic ulcers and gastric *** is a potassium-competitive acid blocker renowned for its rapid and long-lasting acid suppression,which is minimally affected by *** to proton pump inhibitors,which bind irreversibly to cysteine residues in the H+/K+-ATPase pump,Vonoprazan competes with the K+ions,prevents the ions from binding to the pump and blocks acid *** with increasing antibiotic resistance,effects on the gut microbiota,patient compliance,and side effects have led to the advent of a dual regimen for *** studies suggested that *** plays a role in stabilizing the gut barrier which improves *** eradication *** an acceptable safety profile,the dual-adjunct regimen was effective regardless of prior treatment failure and antibiotic resistance profile,thereby strengthening the applicability in clinical ***,*** comes in various formulations and dosages,warranting further exploration into the optimal dosage for supplementation in rescue ***,larger,randomized,double-blinded controlled trials are warranted to confirm these promising results.

Hepatocellular Ballooning is Due to Highly Pronounced Glycogenosis Potentially Associated with Steatosis and Metabolic reprogramming

Background and Aims:Hepatocellular ballooning is a common finding in chronic liver disease,mainly characterized by rarefied cytoplasm that often contains Mallory-Denk bodies(MDB).Ballooning has mostly been attributed to degeneration but its striking resemblance to glycogenotic/steatotic changes characterizing preneoplastic hepatocellular lesions in animal models and chronic human liver diseases prompts the question whether ballooned hepatocytes(BH)are damaged cells on the path to death or rather viable cells,possibly involved in neoplastic ***:Using specimens from 96 cirrhotic human livers,BH characteristics were assessed for their glycogen/lipid stores,enzyme activities,and proto-oncogenic signaling cascades by enzyme-and immunohistochemical approaches with serial paraffin and cryostat ***:BH were present in 43.8%of cirrhotic *** pronounced excess glycogen storage of(glycogenosis)and/or lipids(steatosis)were characteristic,ground glass features and MDB were often *** glucose-6-phosphatase,increased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and altered immunoreactivity of enzymes involved in glycolysis,lipid metabolism,and cholesterol biosynthesis were ***,components of the insulin signaling cascade were upregulated along with insulin dependent glucose transporter glucose transporter 4 and the v-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homolog/mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway associated with de novo ***:BH are hallmarked by particularly pronounced glycogenosis with facultative steatosis,many of their features being reminiscent of metabolic aberrations documented in preneoplastic hepatocellular lesions in experimental animals and chronic human liver ***,BH are not damaged entities facing death but rather viable cells featuring metabolic reprogramming,indicative of a preneoplastic nature.
