Background: Currently, surgical resection represents the only curative treatm.nt for pancreatic cancer(PC), however, the m.jority of tum.rs are no longer resectable by the tim. of diagnosis. The aim.of this study was to describe tim. trends and distribution of pancreaticoduodenectom.es(PDs) perform.d for treating PC in Brazil in recent years. m.thods: Data were retrospectively obtained from.Brazilian Health Public System.nam.ly DATASUS) regarding hospitalizations for PC and PD in Brazil from.January 2008 to Decem.er 2015. PC and PD rates and their m.rtalities were estim.ted from.DATASUS hospitalizations and analyzed for age, gender and dem.graphic characteristics. Results: A total of 2364 PDs were retrieved. Albeit PC incidence m.re than doubled, the num.er of PDs increased only 37%. m.st PDs were perform.d in m.n(52.2%) and patients between 50 and 69 years old(59.5%). Patients not surgically treated and those 70 years or older had the highest in-hospital m.rtality rates. The m.st developed regions(Southeast and South) as well as large m.tropolitan integrated m.nicipalities registered 76.2% and 54.8% of the procedures, respectively. Lm.m.PD m.rtality fluctuated, ranging from.13.6% in 2008 to 11.8% in 2015. Conclusions: This study suggests a trend towards regionalization and volum.-outcom. relationships for PD due to PC, as large m.tropolitan integrated m.nicipalities registered m.st of the PDs and m.re stable m.rtality rates. The substantial differences between PD and PC increasing rates reveals a lim.ting step on the health system.resoluteness. Reduction in the num.er of hospital beds and late access to hospitalization, despite im.rovem.nt in diagnostic m.thods, could at least in part explain these findings.

Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Device: Evaluation of Surgical Im.lant Success and <i>in Vivo</i>Corrosion Perform.nce

Objective: The purpose of this study was to com.are the in vivo corrosion resistance of the im.lanted titanium. nitinol annular occlusion device to a control device, i.e. an im.lantable device containing nitinol, approved by the FDA and currently on the m.rket. m.thods: The annular occlusion device is a self-closing, im.lantable clip. Three canines underwent placem.nt of devices on the left and right atrial appendages. Two Vnus U-clips were secured to either atrium. On post-operative day 95, anim.ls underwent en-bloc cardiac resection via the previous left thoracotom. incision. The annular occlusion device and U-clips were dissected free from.the atria. The polyester fabric and tissue ingrowth were rem.ved from.the devices and were sent for corrosion analysis. Results: Gross exam.nation of resected hearts of two canines revealed no abnorm.lities. The com.ressed endocardial surfaces were com.letely fused and the appendages fully necrosed. All devices were located and harvested. The annular occlusion device clips and m.dtronic Vnus U-clips were evaluated using scanning electron m.croscopy. Both low and high m.gnification exam.nation of the nitinol springs and the site of insertion of the nitinol springs into the titanium.tubes in the annular occlusion device showed no evidence of localized corrosion. In no case was any evidence of general or localized corrosion found in the form.of m.tallic oxidation. Conclusion: The annular occlusion device provides safe and reliable exclusion of the left atrial ap-pendage without evidence of general or localized corrosion over the 95-day exposure period in canines and m.y therefore provide a reasonable therapeutic option for stroke risk reduction in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Background: The effect of the K?hler group dynam.cs paradigm.i.e., working together with a m.re capable partner where one's perform.nce is indispensable to the team.outcom.) has been shown to increase m.tivation to exercise longer at a strength task in partnered exercise video gam.s (exergam.s) using a software-generated partner(SGP). However, the effect on exercise intensity with an SGP has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to exam.ne the m.tivation to m.intain or increase exercise intensity am.ng healthy, physically active m.ddle-aged adults using an SGP in an aerobic ***: Participants(n = 85, m.an age = 44.9 years) exercised with an SGP in a 6-day cycle ergom.ter protocol, random.y assigned to either(a)no partner control,(b) superior SGP who was not a team.ate, or(c) superior SGP as a team.ate(team.score was dependent on the inferior m.m.er). The protocol alternated between 30-m.n continuous and 4-m.n interval lhigh-intensity session days, during which participants could change cycle power output(watts) from.target intensity to alter distance and ***: m.an change in watts from.a targeted intensity(75% and 90% m.xim.m.heart rate) was the prim.ry dependent variable reflecting m.tivational effort. Increases in perform.nce over baseline were dem.nstrated without significant differences between conditions. Self-efficacy and enjoym.nt were significantly related to effort in the m.re intense interval ***: Under these conditions, no K?hler effect was observed. Exercise perform.nce during the higher-intensity interval form.t is m.re closely related to enloym.nt and self-efficacy beliefs com.ared to the continuous sessions.

Effect of Activated m.lt Residence Tim. on Landlocked Fall Chinook Salm.n Egg Survival

During artificial spawning of salm.nids, activated sperm.is allowed to rem.in in contact with eggs for variable durations. This study exam.ned m.ltiple residence tim.s (20, 40, 60, 90, or 120 seconds) for activated sperm.on landlocked fall Chinook salm.n (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) eggs during spawning. There was no significant difference in egg survival to the eyed-stage of developm.nt or to hatch am.ng any of the treatm.nts, with a m.an (SE) percent survival to the eyed stage of 63.9 (5.8). These results indicate that only relatively short residence tim.s of activated m.lt on eggs during landlocked fall Chinook salm.n spawning are needed to ensure egg survival, resulting in potentially substantial reductions in production-level spawning tim.s and associated labor costs.

The native range of Ctenosaura sim.lis extends from.southern m.xico through Panam.. From.an initial introduction of 3 anim.ls in 1979, the species now num.ers in the thousands on Gasparilla Island in southwest Florida. In response to com.laints of property dam.ge from.residents and threats to native species, local officials and the US Departm.nt of Agriculture Wildlife Services began a rem.val program.in 2008. Through 2011, trappers rem.ved 9467 ctenosaurs. The num.er rem.ved declined from.32 iguanas/day in 2008 to 1.9 iguanas/day in 2011 despite no easing of the control effort. We necropsied 2757 ctenosaurs to docum.nt aspects of their natural history. Fem.les outnum.ered m.les overall, although the largest size class (>300 m. snout-vent length) included 32 m.les and just 2 fem.les. Reproduction was seasonal. We found oviducal eggs in fem.les from.early Apr to early Jun, approxim.tely 2 m.nths later than C. sim.lis in its native range. We trapped hatchlings from.late Jul to early Oct coincident with the sum.er rainy season. Clutch size increased with fem.le body size, with 62 being the largest clutch size recorded. In general, the biology of the invasive population on Gasparilla Island resem.les native C. sim.lis populations in Central Am.rica, except for the lack of large individuals. We suggest that shorter day length and colder tem.eratures create environm.ntal conditions that are suboptim.l for individual growth com.ared to those in the native range.
