Alendronate disturbs femoral growth due to changes during immunolocalization of transforming growth factor-β1 and bone morphogenetic protein-2 in epiphyseal plate

Increasing pancreatic cancer is not paralleled by pancreaticoduodenectomy volumes in Brazil:A time trend analysis

Background: Currently, surgical resection represents the only curative treatment for pancreatic cancer(PC), however, the majority of tumors are no longer resectable by the time of diagnosis. The aim of this study was to describe time trends and distribution of pancreaticoduodenectomies(PDs) performed for treating PC in Brazil in recent years. Methods: Data were retrospectively obtained from Brazilian Health Public System(namely DATASUS) regarding hospitalizations for PC and PD in Brazil from January 2008 to december 2015. PC and PD rates and their mortalities were estimated from DATASUS hospitalizations and analyzed for age, gender and demographic characteristics. Results: A total of 2364 PDs were retrieved. Albeit PC incidence more than doubled, the number of PDs increased only 37%. Most PDs were performed in men(52.2%) and patients between 50 and 69 years old(59.5%). Patients not surgically treated and those 70 years or older had the highest in-hospital mortality rates. The most developed regions(Southeast and South) as well as large metropolitan integrated municipalities registered 76.2% and 54.8% of the procedures, respectively. LMIM PD mortality fluctuated, ranging from 13.6% in 2008 to 11.8% in 2015. Conclusions: This study suggests a trend towards regionalization and volume-outcome relationships for PD due to PC, as large metropolitan integrated municipalities registered most of the PDs and more stable mortality rates. The substantial differences between PD and PC increasing rates reveals a limiting step on the health system resoluteness. Reduction in the number of hospital beds and late access to hospitalization, despite improvement in diagnostic methods, could at least in part explain these findings.

Black soldier fly larvae in broiler diets improve broiler performance and modulate the immune system

Non-conventional feed ingredients are receiving more interest in their ability to increase farming effi-ciency,sustainability and animal *** objective of this study was to determine the optimal rate of inclusion level of the full-fat black soldier fly larvae(BSFL)in broiler diets and to evaluate their impact on performance,nutrient digestibility,and the immune system(blood cells and intraepithelial lymphocytes).A total of 400 male day-old Ross 308 broilers were randomly assigned to 5 treatment groups with 8 replicates *** inclusion levels of full-fat BSFL were investigated across starter(0,2.5%,5%,7.5%and 10%),grower and finisher diets(0,5%,10%,15%and 20%).All diets were formulated based on digestible amino acid values according to the Aviagen(2016)recommendations.A polynomial regression at different degrees was performed to analyse broiler performance parameters(body weight,body weight gain,feed intake,and feed conversion ratio),nutrient digestibility,and blood cell *** lymphocyte population data was analysed performing univariate linear *** the entire experimental period(from 2 to 42 d),BSFL inclusion levels decreased the feed conversion ratio by 10%in broilers that received 20%BSFL in their diets(Pdecreased linearly by 47.7%and 35.9%,respectively,with up to 20%BSFL inclusion(Pdecrease in CD3+T lymphocytes and a 9.7-fold decrease of CD3+CD8+intestinal cytotoxic T lymphocytes occurred in broilers fed 20%BSFL compared to the control *** findings suggest that the inclusion of BSFL can improve broiler performance and potentially reduce immune response energy expenditure in birds fed 20%BSFL for 42 d.

Evaluation of Some New Wine Grape Cultivars under S^o Francisco Valley Conditions

This study aimed to evaluate the performance and characteristics of the grapes as subsidies to the recommendation of new wine grape cultivars for the S^o Francisco Valley. An experiment was carried out in Petrolina, Pernambuco state, during four seasons in 2014 and 2015 and the treatments were represented by 10 cultivars and three breeding selections： Grenache, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Syrah for red wines and Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and breeding selections 46, 14 and 47 for white wines. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replicates and two useful plants per plot. The following variables were evaluated： sprouting, bud fertility rate, Ravaz index, production, number of clusters, weight, length and width of cluster, weight and volume of 100 berries, soluble solids and titratable acidity. A better balance between production and vigour was obtained in Grenache, Merlot and Tempranillo cultivars, presenting values of 7.56, 6.50 and 5.93, respectively, for Ravaz index. Grenache, Chenin Blanc and Tempranillo were the most productive cultivars with average yields estimated at 10.4, 8.7 and 8.4 ton/ha/season. Selection 14 had longer, wider and less compact clusters, which can reduce clusters rottenness. The percentage of sprouting ranged from 38.13% in selection 14 to 77.6% in cv. Chenin Blanc. The average index of bud fertility was 0.79 cluster/bud, with no significant differences among cultivars. Greater potential for sugar accumulation was found in the selections 14, 46 and 47, while the titratable acidity ranged from 0.63% in cv. Merlot to 0.89% in selection 47. Grenache and Tempranillo have showed potential to obtain adequate yield and balanced vines, while Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabemet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot presented low yield being necessary to select clones more productive and well adapted to the tropical conditions. Protein phosphorylation is a well-established post-translational mechanism that regulates protein functions and metabolic *** is known that several plant mitochondrial proteins are phosphorylated in a reversible ***,the identities of the protein kinases/phosphatases involved in this mech-anism and their roles in the regulation of the tricarboxylic acid(TCA)cycle remain *** this study,we isolated and characterized plants lacking two mitochondrially targeted phosphatases(Sal2 and PP2c63)along with pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase(PDK),Protein-protein interaction analysis,quantitative phos-phoproteomics,and enzymatic analyses revealed that PDK specifically regulates pyruvate dehydrogenase complex(PDC),while PP2c63 nonspecifically regulates *** recombinant PP2c63 and Sal2 proteins were added to mitochondria isolated from mutant plants,protein-protein interaction and enzymatic analyses showed that PP2c63 directly phosphorylates and modulates the activity of PDC,while Sal2 only indirectly affects TCA cycle *** of steady-state metabolite levels and fluxes in the mutant lines further revealed that these phosphatases regulate flux through the TCA cycle,and that altered metabolism in the sa/2 pp2c63 double mutant compromises plant *** results are discussed in the context of current models of the control of respiration in plants.

Orthotophic Liver Transplantation in Giant Hepatic Hemangioma: A Case Report and Literature Review

Hemangioma is the most common benign tumor affecting the liver in 7% of general population. One of the rare presentations of this pathology is gigantic liver hemangioma, reported in the literature as anecdotal cases. In selected cases, liver transplantation has been a therapeutic option. We herein describe a case of massive liver hemangioma which was submitted to liver transplant, and the main indication for liver transplant in this case was a severe psychosocial impact of the disease in the patient’s life, altogether with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome and abdominal discomfort.

Strategic Partnership Between Private Organizations and Universities： The Search for Regional development Through Solutions for Hospital Management

The public power and the private enterprise, the main agents of national economic and social development, when cooperating strategically, promote increased functional efficiency of their activities. In order to highlight the relevance of such partnership, this article aims to analyze the potential of actions jointly developed by private organizations and Brazilian universities. The research problem is lined in the field of health, which hosted actions developed between the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte （UFRN） and the Hospital Maternity Guiomar Fernandes （HMGF）, located in the city of Alexandria, in Rio Grande do Norte. The study emphasizes the shortcomings of this organization, the resolving power of the university in this scenario, and performs the analysis of the effects of this cooperation. The methodology used in this research was the case study in HMGF. With emphasis on fundraising and improving the informational management system, funding sources for projects of restructuring and expansion of the hospital were sought, as well as initiatives for developing hospital management softwares for small- and medium-sized organizations. As a result, the articulation between the university and the hospital provided the elaboration of a project for software development and the production of a project for physical restructuring and technological investment, aiming to expand the supply and quality of the hospital＇s services. The implementation of information systems, associated with investments in hospital infrastructure, providing increased efficiency in public assistance to the population, bringing both local and regional benefits, besides, providing the authorities with relevant data on the development of public policies.

Linking microbial community analysis and ecosystem studies: A rapid lipid analysis protocol for high throughput

During the past two decades interest in linking soil microbial community composition and activity with ecosystem scale field studies of nutrient cycling or plant community response to disturbances has *** its importance there are challenges in making this *** is the question of analytical *** general,microbiological community-level methodologies have not been readily adaptable to the large sample sizes necessary for ecosystem-scale *** a result,it has been difficult to generate compatible microbial and ecosystem data *** lipid analysis shows potential as a middle ground between simple biomass measures and molecular ***,the two protocols that have most often been followed are either rapid but indiscriminate(total lipid analysis or fatty acid methyl ester analysis;FAME),or precise but time consuming(phospholipid fatty acid analysis;PLFA).In this paper we report results from a standardized soil used test a modified extraction method(the‘hybrid’method)developed to balance the speed of FAME and the precision of PLFA in order to increase sample *** comparing the three methods,we find that FAME and PLFA are qualitatively and quantitatively *** FAME method yielded the highest fatty acid abundance,but also had high variance resulting in low *** PLFA method had precision,but low ***‘hybrid’method fell midway between FAME and PLFA for quantitative fatty acid *** addition,the hybrid extraction can be completed in a fraction of the time it takes for *** hybrid protocol appears to provide an optimal balance between effort and accuracy and therefore is a good choice for large-scale ecosystem studies.
