The concepts of business continuity management,operational resilience,and organizational resilience each refer to actions that businesses and organizations can take in anticipating and responding to ***,the existing definitions and usages are difficult to differentiate due to overlapping objectives,implementation processes,and *** article examines definitions and approaches for these three concepts and suggest a framework to operationalize methods and tools relevant to *** definitions emphasize three dyads:risk versus resilience;organizational processes versus assets;and normal operating conditions versus crisis *** these dyads to differentiate the concepts of business continuity management,operational resilience,and organizational resilience can support planners in clarifying objectives and identifying which approach will be most beneficial as businesses or organizations plan for and encounter *** article evaluates these concepts by examining illustrative examples of disruptions and responses.

Extremely high-rate aqueous supercapacitor fabricated using doped carbon nanoflakes with large surface area and mesopores at near-commercial mass loading

Achieving a satisfactory energy-power combination in a supercapacitor that is based on all-carbon electrodes and operates in benign aqueous media instead of conventional organic electrolytes is a major challenge. For this purpose, we fabricated carbon nanoflakes （20-100 nm in thickness, 5-μm in width） containing an unparalleled combination of a large surface area （3,000 m2-g-1 range） and mesoporosity （up to 72%）. These huge-surface area functionalized carbons （HSAFCs） also had a substantial oxygen and nitrogen content （N10 wt.% combined）, with a significant fraction of redox-active carboxyl/phenol groups in an optimized specimen. Their unique structure and chemistry resulted from a tailored single-step carbonization-activation approach employing （2-benzimidazolyl） acetonitrile combined with potassium hydroxide （KOH）. The HSAFCs exhibited specific capacitances of 474 F-g-1 at 0.5 A.g-1 and 285 F-g-1 at 100 A.g-1 （charging time 〈 3 s） in an aqueous 2 M KOH solution. These values are among the highest reported, especially at high currents. When tested with a stable 1.8-V window in a 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte, a symmetric supercapacitor device using the fabricated nanoflakes as electrodes yielded a normalized active mass of 24.4 Wh-kg-1 at 223 W·kg-1 and 7.3 Wh·kg-1 at 9,360 W·kg-1. The latter value corresponds to a charge time of 〈3 s. The cyclability of the devices was excellent, with 93% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. All the electrochemical results were achieved by employing electrodes with near-commercial mass loadings of 8 mg-cm-2.

Macrophages are typically identified as classically activated(M1) macrophages and alternatively activated(M2) macrophages,which respectively exhibit pro-and anti-inflammatory phenotypes,and the balance between these two subtypes plays a critical role in the regulation of tissue inflammation,injury,and repair *** studies indicate that tissue cells and macrophages interact via the release of small extracellular vesicles(EVs) in processes where EVs released by stressed tissue cells can promote the activation and polarization of adjacent macrophages which can in turn release EVs and factors that can promote cell stress and tissue inflammation and injury and vice *** review discusses the roles of such EVs in resulating such interactions to influence tissue inflammation and injury in a number of acute and chronic inflammatory disease conditions,and the potential applications,advantage and concerns for using EV-based therapeutic approaches to treat such conditions,including their potential role of drug carriers for the treatment of infectious diseases.

Human action famously transforms the Earth and its biosphere and geosphere.1 While most literature consider plowing,burning,debris,and other products and by-products of our activities,direct effects of changing human biomass might merit further *** are now the dominant terrestrial vertebrate,composing about 1/3 of land vertebrate biomass,which translates to 1/10 of total vertebrate biomass.2 The other terrestrial 2/3 consists nearly entirely of livestock kept by humans for ***-domesticated land vertebrates,from shrews to elephants to swallows,form a mere 3%.Human and domestic animal sequences,commonly detected in environmental DNA(eDNA)metabarcoding studies,are routinely excluded from ***,we hypothesize that extending eDNA analysis to include human and domesticated animal eDNA(hdaDNA)will provide insight into present-day and potentially historical human impacts on the biosphere(Figure 1).We think the distribution and abundance of hdaDNA are features of the Anthropocene worthy of study.

BACKGROUND: Costs of care are increasingly important in healthcare policy and, more recently, in clinical care in the emergency department(ED). We compare ED resident and patient perspectives surrounding costs in emergency ***: We conducted a mixed methods study using surveys and qualitative interviews at a single, academic ED in the United States. The two study populations were a convenience sample of adult ED patients(>17 years of age) and ED residents training at the same institution. Participants answered open- and closed-ended questions on costs, medical decision making, cost-related compliance, and communication about costs. Closed-ended data were tabulated and described using standard statistics while open-ended responses were analyzed using grounded ***: Thirty ED patients and 24 ED residents participated in the study. Both patients and residents generally did not have knowledge of medical costs. Patients were comfortable discussing costs while residents were less comfortable. Residents agreed that doctors should consider costs when making medical decisions whereas patients somewhat disagreed. Additionally, residents generally took costs into consideration during clinical decision-making, yet nearly all residents agreed that they had too little education on ***: There were several notable differences in ED patient and resident perspectives on costs in this U.S. sample. While patients somewhat disagree that cost should factor into decision making, generally they are comfortable discussing costs yet report having insuf? cient knowledge of what care costs. Conversely, ED residents view costs as important and agree that cost should factor into decision making but lack education on what emergency care costs.

The rapid development of spectral-imaging methods in scanning probe,electron,and optical microscopy in the last decade have given rise for large multidimensional *** many cases,the reduction of hyperspectral data to the lower-dimension materialsspecific parameters is based on functional fitting,where an approximate form of the fitting function is known,but the parameters of the function need to be ***,functional fits of noisy data realized via iterative methods,such as least-square gradient descent,often yield spurious results and are very sensitive to initial ***,we demonstrate an approach for the reduction of the hyperspectral data using a deep neural network approach.A combined deep neural network/least-square approach is shown to improve the effective signal-to-noise ratio of band-excitation piezoresponse force microscopy by more than an order of magnitude,allowing characterization when very small driving signals are used or when a material’s response is weak.

This paper describes how scientist-philosopher Charles S. Peirce （1839-1914） develops theories that lead eventually to contemporary complex/dynamic systems. In both Peirce and complexity theory, possible bridges appear between analogical/reductionist representations and metaphorical/creative symbols. In complex/dynamic terms, Peirce＇s scientific theories become a conceptual egg that hatches a century later in complex systems, which is relevant in turn to environmental science and engineering.
