The shiny cowbird Molothrus bonariensis parasitizes many species with different life-history traits and has a detrimental effect on the survival of the progeny of the *** response,hosts have developed numerous antiparasitic ***,we examined the effects of brood parasitism by shiny cowbird on the clutch and brood sizes(83 nests)in a small host,the black-backed water tyrant Fluvicola *** also studied whether the death of parasite nestlings was related to the care of the foster parents and whether the host had any antiparasitic defense against the shiny *** results indicate that brood parasitism significantly decreased the host hatching and fledging *** majority of nest failures(57%)were caused by brood *** cowbird parasitism occurred in 52%of nests and the intensity of parasitism was 1.23±0.53 eggs per parasitized *** the total host eggs,54%were *** the incubation stage,20 nests(47%)were abandoned because of egg punctures by shiny cowbirds *** two parasitic fledglings were recorded,while the remaining nestlings either died from starvation(n=12)or predation(n=3).Foster parents abandoned parasitic nestlings between 5 and 10 days *** findings demonstrate that the shiny cowbird has very low rates of fledging success when parasitizing black-backed water ***,parasitism had a high reproductive cost in the black-backed water tyrant because a very low proportion(7%)of the parasitized nests(n=43)were successful.

This experiment aimed to evaluate the effect of calcium salts of linseed oil (rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, C18:3n-3) on metabolic and reproductive traits in high-producing dairy cows under grazing. Thirty-six Holstein dairy cows were randomly assigned, in a complete block design, to receive ALA supplementation (0.85 kg∙day−1 of calcium salts of linseed oil) or to remain as untreated control (COn). The concentrate was formulated to offer the same amount of energy across treatments (COn cows received an extra kg of corn to compensate for the higher energy density of ALA treatment). A PMR + Alfalfa pasture was offered to all cows at the same time. A fixed time artiﬁcial insemination (FTAI) at 80 DIM, preceded by a Presynch plus Ovsynch protocol was implemented for the first service and later, on return to estrus, heat detection and artiﬁcial insemination (AI) were performed. Pregnancy diagnosis was checked at 30, 42, 60, and 90 d after AI. Blood and milk samples were taken biweekly. Treatment affected plasma cholesterol concentration (160.36 vs. 186.70 mg∙dl−1, p = 0.03, for ALA and COn, respectively) and on size of corpus luteum (CL, 17.6 vs. 13.7 mm, p = 0.02, for ALA and COn, respectively). Supplementation tended (p = 0.136) to increase conception rate by 200 DIM (81.69% vs. 55.43% in ALA and COn cows, respectively). However, treatment had no effect (p > 0.05) on body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), and circulating levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), glucose, insulin, growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I). Our results suggest that supplementation with calcium salts of linseed oil could enhance ovarian function without affecting energy metabolism in early lactation dairy cows.

Assessment of aerobic biodegradation of lower-chlorinated benzenes in contaminated groundwater using field-derived microcosms and compound-specific carbon isotope fractionation

Biodegradation of lower chlorinated benzenes(tri-, di-and monochlorobenzene) was assessed at a coastal aquifer contaminated with multiple chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons. Field-derived microcosms, established with groundwater from the source zone and amended with a mixture of lower chlorinated benzenes, evidenced biodegradation of monochlorobenzene(MCB) and 1,4-dichlorobenzene(1,4-DCB) in aerobic microcosms,whereas the addition of lactate in anaerobic microcosms did not enhance anaerobic reductive dechlorination. Aerobic microcosms established with groundwater from the plume consumed several doses of MCB and concomitantly degraded the three isomers of dichlorobenzene with no observable inhibitory effect. In the light of these results, we assessed the applicability of compound stable isotope analysis to monitor a potential aerobic remediation treatment of MCB and 1,4-DCB in this site. The carbon isotopic fractionation factors(ε) obtained from field-derived microcosms were-0.7‰ ± 0.1 ‰ and-1.0‰ ± 0.2 ‰ for MCB and1,4-DCB, respectively. For 1,4-DCB, the carbon isotope fractionation during aerobic biodegradation was reported for the first time. The weak carbon isotope fractionation values for the aerobic pathway would only allow tracing of in situ degradation in aquifer parts with high extent of biodegradation. However, based on the carbon isotope effects measured in this and previous studies, relatively high carbon isotope shifts(i.e., Δδ13C > 4.0 ‰) of MCB or 1,4-DCB in contaminated groundwater would suggest that their biodegradation is controlled by anaerobic reductive dechlorination.

The onset of the movement of particles placed on a horizontal rough surface subject to a vertical sinusoidal vibration is investigated through tracking experiments,theoretical analysis,and numerical simulations. The frequency of vibration needed to move particles decays exponentially with the amplitude of the oscillatory *** behavior is explained through a simple mechanism in which a forced damped harmonic oscillator with a spring constant represents all the interactions between the particle and the *** numerical results compare well with experimental data,demonstrating that the forces included in the numerical calculations suitably account for the main particle response,even though the complexity of the surface is not fully taken into *** the way in which frequency varies with amplitude could be relevant to technological applications such as cleaning of material surfaces.

Objective: To report a case series of dome-shaped macula (DSM) and serous retinal detachment (SRD). Methods: A retrospective and observational case series study was performed at two centers of ophthalmology in Rosario-Argentina from January 2016 to December 2017. Eight eyes of 5 patients diagnosed with dome-shaped macula with subfoveal hyporeflective zone seen in optical coherence tomography (OCT) were included. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), OCT, fluorescein angiography (FA), differential diagnoses, clinical course and different treatments were reviewed. Results: Baseline visual acuity ranged from 20/25 to 20/200. OCT revealed that the retinal choroidal macular complex had a convex shape and exhibited foveal neurosensory retinal detachment in all cases. FA showed mild diffuse hyperfluorescence due to changes in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). no sign of leakage was observed. Different treatments were used, including intravitreal antiangiogenic drugs, oral spironolactone, melatonin and observation. Follow-up time was between 6 and 18 months. BCVA and OCT findings remained unchanged after different options of treatment. Conclusions: DSM is an unusual entity, which can be confused with other maculopathies that cause neurosensory retinal detachment and do not respond to different types of treatment. Hence, in our opinion, observation is a reasonable approach for this disorder.

Computational Aspects of Dam Risk Analysis： Findings and Challenges

In recent years, risk analysis techniques have proved to be a useful tool to inform dam safety manage- ment. This paper summarizes the outcomes of three themes related to dam risk analysis discussed in the Benchmark Workshops organized by the International Commission on Large Dams Technical Com- mittee on ＂Computational Aspects of Analysis and Design of Dams.＂ In the 2011 Benchmark Workshop, estimation of the probability of failure of a gravity dam for the sliding failure mode was discussed. next, in 2013, the discussion focused on the computational challenges of the estimation of consequences in dam risk analysis. Finally, in 2015, the probability of sliding and overtopping in an embankment was an- alyzed. These Benchmark Workshops have allowed a complete review of numerical aspects for dam risk analysis, showing that risk analysis methods are a very useful tool to analyze the risk of dam systems, including downstream consequence assessments and the uncertainty of structural models.

TWIST is a transcription factor that belongs to the family of helix-loop-helix proteins involved in metastasis with essential role regulating cell movement during early development, as well as in the tumor progression and metastasis of many cancers including breast cancer. It will be interesting to study the relation among cancer chemotherapy, malnutrition and the transcription factors like TWIST in order to explore the risk to metastasis. We used breast cancer line MDA-MB-231. Cell cultures were treated with 5-Fluorouracil (5-Fu), as well as changes in serum and nonessentials amino acid (nEAA), to explore the cell viability and the cellular distribution of TWIST by immunocytochemistry. Our results indicate that cell viability decreased significantly with 5-Fu treatment whereas no changes were observed in malnutrition treatment. On the other hand, TWIST protein significantly increased its distribution in cytoplasm of treated groups with malnutrition as well as in those treated with 5-Fu compared with the control. These results suggest that TWIST translocation was modified by the treatments and further studies are necessary to suggest that TWIST could be a tag protein to avoid metastasis.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of supplying calcium salts of linseed oil (Ca-FA) rich in omega-3 (α-linolenic acid) on the production and chemical composition of milk and its nutraceutical value in dairy cows in early lactation. The trial lasted 12 weeks (2 weeks for adaptation to lipids and 10 weeks of data collection). A total of 36 Holstein dairy cows with 58.0 ± 17.0 days in milk (DIM), 594.1 ± 92.4 kg BW, 2.6 ± 1.5 parity and 38.9 ± 9.3 kg milk day-1 were used in a randomized complete block design. The treatments were: 1) Omega-3 (O3): 5.2 kg DM day-1 of concentrate including 0.7 kg DM of Ca-FA + 13.5 kg DM day-1 of partial mixed ration (PMR) + 12 kg DM day-1 of alfalfa pasture (Medicago sativa) and 2) Control (C): diet similar to O3 but lipid supplementation was replaced by cracked corn grain so that the diets were isoenergetic. no treatment effect was detected (P > 0.05) for any milk production and composition variables, except for urea in milk that was slightly higher in O3 (P = 0.02). The treatment × week interaction was significant (P nd content, with differences (P nly in the 3rd week of the data collection period in favor of group C (1.39 vs. 1.13 kg·day-1 and 3.86% vs. 3.23% for fat yield and content, respectively).
