Relationship between lipoprotein （a） and micro/macro complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus： a forgotten target

Objectives Increased lipoprotein （a） serum concentration seems to be a cardiovascular risk factor; this has not been confirmed in extracoronary atherosclerosis complications. We therefore wished to gain a deeper insight into relationship between the plasma concentrations of lipoprotein （a） and the micro- and macro-vascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus and to identify possible differences in this association. Methods This is a descriptive observational cross-sectional study. Two-hundred and seventeen elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were included from the internal medicine outclinic. Anthropometric data, analytical data （insulin reserve, basal and postprandial peptide C, glycosylated hemoglobin, renal parameters, lipid profile and clinical data as hypertension, obesity, micro and macrovascular complications were collected. Results Patients were grouped according to the type 2 diabetes mellitus time of evolution. The mean plasma concentration of lipoprotein （a） was 22.2± 17.3 mg/dL （22.1± 15.9 mg/dL for males, and 22.1 ± 18.4 mg/dL for females）. Patients with hypertension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular accident, microalbuminuria and proteinuria presented a statistically significant increased level of lipoprotein （a）. Similarly, the patients with hyperlipoprotein （a）（≥30 mg/dL） presented significantly increased levels of urea and total cholesterol. In the multivariate regression model, the level of lipoprotein （a） is positively correlated with coronary heart disease and diabetic nephropathy （P 〈 0.01 and P 〈 0.005, respectively）. Conclusions The elevation of plasma levels of lipoprotein （a） are associ- ated with the development of coronary heart disease and diabe tic nephropathy. Therefore, we consider that the determination of lipoprotein （a） may be a prognostic marker of vascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The problems associated with the subjective assessment of human sperm morphology have been well aired in another Asian Journal of Andrology Special Issue1 that marked the publication of the 5th edition of the WHO Semen analysis manual, and contrary views have subsequently been presented） However, the vagaries of the eye-brain system in assessing whether a sperm head is large or small can be eliminated by objective assessment where definitive structures are defined by their dimensions. These can then be classified automatically into as many categories as the data permit, conventionally on the basis of preset upper and lower limits, but also by more comprehensive analysis as discussed here.

An Insight into Spatial-Temporal Trends of Fire Ignitions and Burned Areas in the European Mediterranean Countries

This paper presents an analysis of the fire trends in southern European countries, where forest fires are a major hazard. Data on number of fires and burned area size from 1985 until 2009 were retrieved from the European Fire Database in the European Forest Fire Information System and used to study the temporal and spatial variability of fire occurrence at three different spatial scales： the whole European Mediterranean region, country level and province level （NUTS3）. The temporal trends were assessed with the Mann-Kendall test and Sen＇s slope in the period 1985-2009. At regional （supranational） level, our results suggest a significant decreasing trend in the burned area for the whole study period. At country level, the trends vary by country, although there is a general increase in number of fires, mainly in Portugal, and a decrease in bumed areas, as is the case of Spain. A similar behavior was found at NUTS3 level, with an increase of number of fires in the Spanish and Portuguese provinces and a generalized decrease of the burned area in most provinces of the region. These results provide an important insight into the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of fires, a crucial step to investigate the underlying causes and impacts of fire occurrence in this region.

NMR Protein-Ligand Interaction Studies under Non-Homogeneous Conditions for Biomaterial Generation： A Model for Artificial Lectin-Carbohydrate Recognition

Smart biomaterials for tissue regeneration need to incorporate molecules able to interact with specific cellular adhesion or morphogenic proteins of the extracellular matrix (ECM). NMR binding studies allow obtaining structural information essential for the comprehension of biological processes and, nowadays, high-resolution magic-angle-spinning (HR-MAS) NMR spectroscopy is a well-established tool for the study of heterogeneous systems. Here the generation of a model-system used to explore the possibility to reveal interactions between two molecular entities, one of which linked to a solid support, to mimic a bioactive species immobilized on a biomaterial surface, is presented. The carbohydrate recognition processes that take place in the ECM have a pivotal role in promoting cell adhesion and differentiation and, thus, tissue regeneration. Hence, a pseudo-receptor, that mimics the lectin binding site was prepared and its interaction with a panel of different monosaccharides was characterized. The results obtained support the theoretical model according to which lectins bind carbohydrates exploiting the CH-π interactions occurring in their active site. Moreover the NMR experimental approach here described can be generally applied when the interacting species do not have the same solubility properties in physiological conditions and, in particular, can be exploited for the analysis and characterization of molecular recognition events occurring at biomaterial surface.
