Influence of Geological Factor on Indoor Radon Concentrations in Dwelling of Queretaro,Mexico

In this study, radon-222 concentrations were measured within 34 houses distributed in the northern, southern, and central areas of the city of Querétaro in 2007. The objective of this study was to establish the spatial distribution of radon with respect to geological faults and its relation to certain environmental variables. For each sampling site, the radon-222 concentration was analyzed as a function of various climate variables, relative humidity, temperature, and atmospheric pressure, in addition to the ventilation of the house and distance of each site from any geological faults in the area. A multivariate statistical technique was used to analyze these variables based on two components. For component 1, the relative humidity and temperature had the greatest weight, 0.677 and 0.492, respectively, while for component 2, the greatest weights corresponded to radon and the temperature with 0.693 and 0.609, respectively. The average radon concentration across the entire sampling period was 38.92 Bq/m3, the minimum detected value was 6.01 Bq/m3?for site 91GAG0607, and the maximum detected value was 225.95 Bq/m3?for site 91CAM20907. This last value is outside the standards permitted by the Environmental Protection Agency of the United stated, which is 148 Bq/m3?for indoor environments. With respect to geological faults and their relationship to radon-222, the concentrations for the sampling sites had no relationship to the closeness or distance to these faults.

IgA nephropathy: Are We Doing Enough?

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAn) was first identified and described as a disease by Berger and Hinglais in 1968. It is the most common primary glomerulopathy worldwide [1], most prevalent in East Asians and Caucasians and rare in black individuals. There are four key elements that contribute to IgAn, which determine the severity, course, and prognosis of the disease: circulating IgA immunocomplexes that favor mesangial deposition, the efficiency of the reticuloendothelial system, mesangial cell affinity and reaction to mesangial accumulation of poorly glycosylated IgA1, and the renal tendency to glomerulosclerosis and interstitial fibrosis. Clinical manifestations among patients with IgAn include hematuria, approximately 40% to 50% of cases present with one or more episodes of hematuria, usually preceded by upper respiratory tract infections. Between 30% and 40% present with hematuria and non-nephrotic range proteinuria that may be associated with arterial hypertension and impaired renal function. The TEsTInG study reveal a significant decrease in outcomes such as the risk of a 40% decrease in glomerular filtration rate or the need for renal replacement therapy in the group treated with steroids. The decrease in renal function compared to the group treated in the previously mentioned sTOP-IgAn trial was 4 times less than in the TEsTInG study. Are we doing enough? Obviously, more trials are required with the use of adequate nephroprotection measures. We present 3 patients with a diagnosis of IgA nephropathy who attend the follow-up consultation and voluntarily decide to take part in the review.

Clinicopathological predictors of long-term benefit in breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy

AIM To investigate the survival impact of clinicopathological factors, including pathological complete response(p CR) and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes(s TIL) levels according to subtypes, in breast cancer(BC) patients who received neo-adjuvant chemotherapy(nAC).METHODs We evaluated 435 BC patients who presented and received nAC at the Instituto nacional de Enfermedades neoplasicas from 2003 to 2014. s TIL was analyzed as the proportion of tumor stroma occupied by lymphocytes, and was prospectively evaluated on hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of the pren AC core biopsy. p CR was considered in the absence of infiltrating cancer cells in primary tumor and axillary lymph nodes. Analysis of statistical association between clinical pathological features, s TIL, p CR and survival were carried out using *** Median age was 49 years(range 24-84 years) and the most frequent clinical stage was ⅢB(58.3%). Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2-enriched and(triple-negative) Tn phenotype was found in 24.6%, 37.9%, 17.7% and 19.8%, respectively. p CR was observed in 11% and median percentage of s TIL was 40%(2%-95%) in the whole population. p CR was associated to Ct1-2(P = 0.045) and to high s TIL(P = 0.029) in the whole population. There was a slight trend towards significance for s TIL(P = 0.054) in Luminal A. s TIL was associated with grade Ⅲ(P no-Luminal A subtype(P negative(P negative(P sitive(P = 0.002) and p CR(P = 0.029) in the whole population. The subject of this study is the microcredit market in the UsA,more specifically in *** justification for choosing this specific state is the massive presence of the Hispanic *** will facilitate a generalization of the obtained results to the microcredit market in latin American ***,the objective of this study is to analyze the profile of microcredit holders and their companies from socioeconomic and financial points of *** our data also consider the degree of repayment of the microloans included in the sample,the clients’profile is related to the punctuality or default of their corresponding loan repayments using the methodology of multi-nomial logit *** variables used in this study refer to personal information concerning borrowers(gender,age,education level,and marital status),the economic situation of their respective companies(closeness to the lender,number of workers,and revenues),and the characteristics of granted loans(principal,term,and purpose).However,the results of the regression show that only two variables are significant at the 5%significance level:the borrower’s age,which has a positive effect on repay-ment punctuality,and the loan term,which exhibits a negative *** findings of this study have clear implications,as they can help lenders design suitable microloans adjusted to customer ***,future research should include other demograph-ics and characteristics of affected companies.

Exploring the Feasibility of Text Messaging Intervention in Intimate Partner Violence

Introduction: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is defined as controlling, abusive, and aggressive behavior in a romantic relationship. Women between the ages 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of IPV. IPV costs Us society at least $13.6 billion annually and is expected to rise to $15.6 billion by 2021. The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of Text Messaging Intervention (TMI) in recognizing, responding and preventing IPV among college students. The research questions are: Will TMI 1) improve participant knowledge of warning signs of IPV? (Knowledge) and 2) improve participant confidence to intervene in IPV? (Confidence). Methods: A mixed methods design in data collection and data analysis was used. One-way AnOVA and Chi-square test were used to analyze quantitative data from the pre and post TMI survey. Results of the qualitative data analysis are included verbatim. Results: Results showed that knowledge level pre to post test increased from 2.00 ± 1.00 to 2.7 ± 0.48 (p nd confidence level pre to post test increased from 2.89 ± 0.60 to 3.30 ± 0.68 (p nclusions: Further research is needed in evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of IPV prevention programs that uses mobile devices to create the best optimal health outcomes.

Mediastinal Liposarcoma: Case Report and Literature Review

Liposarcomas (Ls) are the second most common type of soft tissue malignancies in adults;they arise from mesenchymal cells and account for 1% of all adult cancers and 15% of all pediatric cancers. The site of origin can be from anywhere there is fat in the human body. Ls are classified based on the primary site of origin, and mediastinal Ls are extremely rare. When mediastinal neoplasms are stratified based on histology, they represent less than 1% of all span>mediastinal tumors. To date, less than 150 cases have been reported in the English literature. This article aims to present an unusual case of an extremely rare malignancy and perform a systematic review of the latest literature. In this report, our group is documenting the presentation, management, and outcome of a 65-year-old male patient with a massive anterior mediastinal primary LS. The tumor was displacing the mediastinum into the right chest, occupying most of the left chest, and pushing the diaphragm into the abdomen. Mediastinal liposarcomas are extremely rare malignancies and can prove to be challenging to diagnose and treat. Aggressive surgical treatment with R0 resection is the gold standard, however, tumor biology in many cases is associated with variable growth rates and encroachment of adjacent vital structures and blood vessels. When complex anatomical structures preclude an R0 resection, there is a high incidence of local recurrence. In cases where there is a high risk of recurrence, radiotherapy is indicated and chemotherapy has a more limited role.

Root and leaf functional trait relations in Poaceae species: implications of differing resource- acquisition strategies

Aims root systems play an essential role in grassland functioning in both acquisition and storage of ***,root functional traits have not received as much attention as those measured on above-ground organs,and little is known about their *** objec-tives were to test whether morphological and root system traits allowed identification of grass species’functional strategies and to determine whether a relation exists between above-and below-ground *** Functional traits of root tissues(specific root length,diameter,tissue density and nitrogen concentration),whole root systems(root mass,root length density,root mass percentage below a depth of 20 cm and fine root%)and two major leaf traits(specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content)were determined under field conditions and their rela-tions were analysed in eleven perennial temperate Poaceae *** Findings Canonical correspondence analysis along axis 1 revealed a gra-dient of species,from those with deep,dense and coarse root systems with a large root mass to those with shallow root sys-tems,thin roots and high specific root length;this suggests strong correlations among root *** between specific root length and specific leaf area reveal two groups of species,which probably indicates different drought-tolerance *** trait syndromes enable ranking grasses along a gradient from conservative-strategy species(from stressful habitats),which display a deep and coarse root system,to acquisitive species(from rich and moist meadows),which display a shallow and thin root *** both types display similar above-ground strategies,drought-tolerant species have lower specific root lengths than drought-sensitive species,revealing more conservative root strategies.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBdes)have been used as flame retardants in various building materials,plastic and other polymers,airplanes,electronics,*** or some of their congeners have been already banned in many countries,due to their persistency and adverse health *** this study,we are focusing on e-wastes as a source of emission of PBdes in ambient air during reclamation *** ambient air particulate matter(PM)samples were collected at and near an e-waste reclamation site in Bangkok,*** showed the presence of various homologues,viz:tri-,tetra-,penta-,hexa-,and hepta-PBdes in both PM2.5 and total suspended particle(TsP)*** comparison of samples as a function of distance from the reclamation site indicated elevated levels of PBdes in close proximity to the e-waste ***,a shift in the congener pattern was observed with lower brominated PBdes being more prevalent in nearby off-site samples as compared to the PM collected at the e-waste *** total penta-PBdes concentration is almost double in the e-waste site PM2.5 compared to the control site *** TsP,tetra,penta,and hepta-PBdes congeners are at higher concentrations at the e-waste sites and its vicinity compared to reference ***,a clear trend can be observed indicating a debromination of PBdes to more toxic tri and tetra congeners during the reclamation process and PBdes are being translocated from treated materials to ambient air *** 30 is uniquely detected in our studies as a dominant final debromination product,that can be used as a marker of thermal e-waste *** work indicates potential hazards related to the reclamation of e-wastes and remediation of sites containing *** particular,thermal treatment methods can lead to congener transformation and increased emissions of more toxic lower brominated congeners.

normal values of heart rate variability at rest in a young, healthy and active Mexican population

This study analyzed Heart Rate Variability in a large sample of active young subjects within a narrow age range (18 to 25), using time and frequency domain methods and a Poincaré plot. Heart rate was recorded (beat to beat) for 30 minutes at rest in 200 healthy subjects divided into 4 groups: 50 sportsmen (20.54 ± 1.52 years);50 active men (21.22 ± 1.31 years);50 sportswomen (20.10 ± 1.87 years) and 50 active women (20.92 ± 1.87 years). significant differences were found for most parameters between athletes and active subjects (male and female) but not between genders. Percentile distributions were provided for all parameters (according to gender and physical activity level) to be used as references in future researches.
