Malaria importation is one of the hypothetical drivers of malaria transmission dynamics across the globe.Several studies on malaria importation focused on the effect of the use of conventional malaria control strategies as approved by the World Health Organization(WHO)on malaria transmission dynamics but did not capture the effect of the use of traditional malaria control strategies by vigilant humans.In order to handle the aforementioned situation,a novel system of Ordinary Differential Equations(ODEs)was developed comprising the human and the malaria vector compartments.Analysis of the system was carried out to assess its quantitative properties.The novel computational algorithm used to solve the developed system of ODEs was implemented and benchmarked with the existing Runge-Kutta numerical solution method.Furthermore,simulations of different vigilant conditions useful to control malaria were carried out.The novel system of malaria models was well-posed and epidemiologically meaningful based on its quantitative properties.The novel algorithm performed relatively better in terms of model simulation accuracy than Runge-Kutta.At the best model-fit condition of 98%vigilance to the use of conventional and traditional malaria control strategies,this study revealed that malaria importation has a persistent impact on malaria transmission dynamics.In lieu of this,this study opined that total vigilance to the use of the WHO-approved and traditional malaria management tools would be the most effective control strategy against malaria importation.

Temperature,water,and light are three abiotic stress factors that have major influences on plant growth,development,and reproduction.Plants can be primed by a prior mild stress to enhance their resistance to future stress.We used an untargeted metabolomics approach to examine Arabidopsis thaliana 11-day-old seedling’s abiotic stress responses including heat(with and without priming),cold(with and without priming),water-deficit and high-light before and after a 2-day-recovery period.Analysis of the physiological phenotypes showed that seedlings with stress treatment resulted in a reduction in fresh weight,hypocotyl and root length but remained viable.Several stress responsive metabolites were identified,confirmed with reference standards,quantified,and clustered.We identified shared and specific stress signatures for cold,heat,water-deficit,and high-light treatments.Central metabolism including amino acid metabolism,sugar metabolism,glycolysis,TCA cycle,GABA shunt,glutathione metabolism,purine metabolism,and urea cycle were found to undergo changes that are fundamentally different,although some shared commonalities in response to different treatments.Large increases in cysteine abundance and decreases in reduced glutathione were observed following multiple stress treatments highlighting the importance of oxidative stress as a general phenomenon in abiotic stress.Large fold increases in low-turnover amino acids and maltose demonstrate the critical role of protein and starch autolysis in early abiotic stress responses.

The integration of additive manufacturing(AM)in design and engineering has prompted a wide spectrum of research efforts,involving topologically optimized solid/lattice structures,multimaterial structures,bioinspired organic structures,and multiscale structures,to name a few.However,except for obvious cases,very little attention has been given to the design and printing of more complex three-dimensional(3D)hollow structures or folded/creased structures.One of the main reasons is that such complex open or closed 3D cavities and regular/freeform folds generally lead to printing difficulties from support-structure-related issues.To address this barrier,this paper aims to investigate four-dimensional(4D)printing as well as origami-based design as an original research direction to design and build 3D support-free hollow structures.This work consists of describing the rough 3D hollow structures in terms of two-dimensional(2D)printed origami precursor layouts without any support structure.Such origami-based definitions are then embodied with folding functions that can be actuated and fulfilled by 3D printed smart materials.The desired 3D shape is then built once an external stimulus is applied to the active materials,therefore ensuring the transformation of the 2D origami layout to 3D structures.To demonstrate the relevance of the proposal,some illustrative cases are introduced.

Proteases comprise a variety of enzymes defined by their ability to catalytically hydrolyze the peptide bonds of other proteins,resulting in protein lysis.Cathepsins,specifically,encompass a class of at least twenty proteases with potent endopeptidase activity.They are located subcellularly in lysosomes,organelles responsible for the cell’s degradative and autophagic processes,and are vital for normal lysosomal function.Although cathepsins are involved in a multitude of cell signaling activities,this chapter will focus on the role of cathepsins(with a special emphasis on Cathepsin B)in neuronal plasticity.We will broadly define what is known about regulation of cathepsins in the central nervous system and compare this with their dysregulation after injury or disease.Importantly,we will delineate what is currently known about the role of cathepsins in axon regeneration and plasticity after spinal cord injury.It is well established that normal cathepsin activity is integral to the function of lysosomes.Without normal lysosomal function,autophagy and other homeostatic cellular processes become dysregulated resulting in axon dystrophy.Furthermore,controlled activation of cathepsins at specialized neuronal structures such as axonal growth cones and dendritic spines have been positively implicated in their plasticity.This chapter will end with a perspective on the consequences of cathepsin dysregulation versus controlled,localized regulation to clarify how cathepsins can contribute to both neuronal plasticity and neurodegeneration.

Coal is the major source of power in India and world over.Coal mining is an essential industry which has a major role in the economic development of the country.Most major mining activities contribute directly or indirectly to air pollution.Coal dust is a major air pollutant which affects the personal working in the mines and also people residing in villages near the mines.Air pollution due to coal particulates can affect human health and cause damages to the environment.Hence effective pollution control mechanisms are needed to keep the pollution levels within permissible levels.The easiest and most common method employed for dust suppression worldwide is sprinkling of water.In majority of mines,water sprinklers are operated manually and can lead to wastage of water due to over sprinkling.It can also prove to be ineffective in dust suppression if sprinkling is not done properly.The paper proposes a system which can be deployed to automate the dust suppressions sprinklers.The system will monitor the concentration of PM_(10) and PM_(2.5) in the air and initiate sprinkling operation when the particulate matter content exceeds preconfigured limits.

Using deep neural networks to solve PDEs has attracted a lot of attentions recently.However,why the deep learning method works is falling far behind its empirical success.In this paper,we provide a rigorous numerical analysis on deep Ritz method(DRM)[47]for second order elliptic equations with Neumann boundary conditions.We establish the first nonasymptotic convergence rate in H^(1)norm for DRM using deep networks with ReLU^(2)activation functions.In addition to providing a theoretical justification of DRM,our study also shed light on how to set the hyperparameter of depth and width to achieve the desired convergence rate in terms of number of training samples.Technically,we derive bound on the approximation error of deep ReLU^(2)network in C^(1)norm and bound on the Rademacher complexity of the non-Lipschitz composition of gradient norm and ReLU^(2)network,both of which are of independent interest.

BACKGROUND Diabetes rates among pregnant women in the United States have been increasing and are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.AIM To investigate differences in birth outcomes(preterm birth,macrosomia,and neonatal death)by diabetes status.METHODS Cross-sectional design,using linked Missouri birth and death certificates(singleton births only),2010 to 2012(n=204057).Exposure was diabetes non-diabetic,pre-pregnancy diabetes-insulin dependent(PD-I),pre-pregnancy diabetes-non-insulin dependent(PD-NI),gestational diabetes-insulin dependent(GD-I),and gestational diabetes-non-insulin dependent(GD-NI).Outcomes included preterm birth,macrosomia,and infant mortality.Confounders included demographic characteristics,adequacy of prenatal care,body mass index,smoking,hypertension,and previous preterm birth.Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression assessed differences in outcomes by diabetes status.RESULTS Women with PD-I,PD-NI,and GD-I remained at a significantly increased odds for preterm birth(aOR 2.87,aOR 1.77,and aOR 1.73,respectively)and having a very large baby[macrosomia](aOR 3.01,aOR 2.12,and aOR 1.96,respectively);in reference to non-diabetic women.Women with GDNI were at a significantly increased risk for macrosomia(aOR1.53),decreased risk for their baby to die before their first birthday(aOR 0.41)and no difference in risk for preterm birth in reference to non-diabetic women.CONCLUSION Diabetes is associated with the poor birth outcomes.Clinical management of diabetes during pregnancy and healthy lifestyle behaviors before pregnancy can reduce the risk for diabetes and poor birth outcomes.
