In this review, combined post-mortem brain magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and histology studies are highlighted, illustrating the relevance of translational approaches to de?ne novel MRI signatures of neuropathological lesions in neuroin?ammatory and neurodegenerative disorders. Initial studies combining post-mortem MRI and histology have validated various MRI sequences,assessing their sensitivity and speci?city as diagnostic biomarkers in neurologic disease. More recent studies have focused on de?ning new radiological(bio)markers and implementing them in the clinical(research) setting. By combining neurological and neuroanatomical expertise with radiological development and pathological validation,a cycle emerges that allows for the discovery of novel MRI biomarkers to be implemented in vivo. Examples of this cycle are presented for multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and traumatic brain *** applications have been shown to be successful, while others require further validation. In conclusion, there is much to explore with post-mortem MRI and histology studies, which can eventually be of high relevance for clinical practice.

The study of the critical zones(CZs) of the Earth link the composition and function of aboveground vegetation with the characteristics of the rock layers, providing a new way to study how the unique rock and soil conditions in karst regions affect the aboveground vegetation. Based on survey results of the rocks, soils and vegetation in the dolomite and limestone distribution areas in the karst area of central Guizhou, it was found that woody plant cover increases linearly with the number of cracks with a width of more than 1 mm, while the cover of herbaceous plants shows the opposite trend(p<0.01). The dolomite distribution area is characterized by undeveloped crevices, and the thickness of the soil layer is generally less than 20 cm, which is suitable for the distribution of herbaceous plants with shallow roots. Due to the development of crevices in the limestone distribution area, the soil is deeply distributed through the crevices for the deep roots of trees, which leads to a diversified species composition and a complicated structure in the aboveground vegetation. Based on moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer(MODIS) remote sensing data from 2001 to 2010, the normalized differentiated vegetation index(NDVI) and annual net primary productivity(NPP) results for each phase of a 16-day interval further indicate that the NDVI of the limestone distribution area is significantly higher than that in the dolomite distribution area, but the average annual NPP is the opposite. The results of this paper indicate that in karst CZs, the lithology determines the structure and distribution of the soil, which further determines the cover of woody and herbaceous plants in the aboveground vegetation. Although the amount of soil in the limestone area may be less than that in the dolomite area, the developed crevice structure is more suitable for the growth of trees with deep roots, and the vegetation activity is strong. Repurposing small molecule drugs and drug candidates is considered as a promising approach to revolutionise the treatment of snakebite *** this study,we investigated the inhibiting effects of the small molecules varespladib(nonspecific phospholipase A2 inhibitor),marimastat(broad spectrum matrix metalloprotease inhibitor)and dimercaprol(metal ion chelator)against coagulopathic toxins found in Crotalinae(pit vipers)snake *** from Bothrops asper,Bothrops jararaca,Calloselasma rhodostoma and Deinagkistrodon acutus were separated by liquid chromatography,followed by nanofractionation and mass spectrometry identification undertaken in *** of the venom toxins were then subjected to a high-throughput coagulation assay in the presence of different concentrations of the small molecules under *** venom toxins were mostly identified as phospholipases A2,while procoagulant venom activities were mainly associated with snake venom metalloproteinases and snake venom serine *** was found to effectively inhibit most anticoagulant venom effects,and also showed some inhibition against procoagulant ***,marimastat and dimercaprol were both effective inhibitors of procoagulant venom activities but showed little inhibitory capability against anticoagulant *** information obtained from this study aids our understanding of the mechanisms of action of toxin inhibitor drug candidates,and highlights their potential as future snakebite treatments.

Wigmore’s charts and Bayesian networks are used to represent graphically the construction of arguments and to evaluate them. KAOS is a goal oriented requirements analysis method that enables the analysts to capture requirements through the realization of the business goals. However, KAOS does not have inbuilt mechanism for evaluating these goals and the inferring process. This paper proposes a method for evaluating KAOS models through the extension of Wigmore’s model with features of Bayesian networks.

Cellular strategies remain a crucial component in bone tissue engineering （BTE）. So far, the outcome of cell-based strategies from initial clinical trials is far behind compared to animal studies, which is suggested to be related to insufficient nutrient and oxygen supply inside the Ussue-engineered constructs. Cocultures, by introducing angiogenic cells into osteogenic cell cultures, might provide a solution for improving vascularization and hence increasing bone formation for cell-based constructs. So far, pre-clinical studies demonstrated that cocultures enhance vascularization and bone formation compared to monocultures. However, there has been no report on the application of cocultures in clinics. Therefore, this mini-review aims to provide an overview regarding （i） critical parameters in cocultures and the outcomes of cocultures compared to monocultures in the currently available pre-clinical studies using human mesenchymal stem cells implanted in orthotopic animal models; and （ii） the usage of monocultures in clinical application in BTE.

Although neurophysiological and psychophysical proof of osseoperception is accumulating, histomorphometric evidence for the neural mechanisms of functional compensation following immediate and delayed implant loading is still lacking. For this randomized split-mouth study, six mongrel dogs randomly received one of four treatment protocols at 36 implant-recipient sites over 16 weeks （third maxillary incisor, third and fourth mandibular premolar）： immediate implant placement and immediate loading （liP＋ IL）; delayed implant placement and delayed loading （DIP＋DL）; delayed implant placement and immediate loading （DIP＋IL）; and natural extraction socket healing （control）. Histomorphometry was performed in the peri-implant bone and soft tissues within 300 pm around the implants. Immunocytochemistry and transmission electron microscopy were used to confirm the presence of neural structures and to reveal their ultrastructural characteristics, respectively. Myelinated nerve fibres densely populated the peri-implant crestal gingival and apical regions, although they were also identified in the woven bone and in the osteons near the implant threads. Compared with the control group in the mandible, the group that received IIP＋IL showed a higher innervation （in ***^-2, 5.94±1.12 vs. 3.15±0.63, P〈0.001） and smaller fibre diameter （in pm, 1.37±0.05 vs. 1.64±0.13, P=0.016）, smaller axon diameter （in pm, 0.89±0.05 vs. 1.24±0,10, P=0.009） and g-ratio （0.64±0.04 vs. 0.76±0.05, P〈0.001） in the middle region around the implants. Compared with DIP＋IL in the mandible, IIP＋IL had a higher nerve density （in ***^-2, 13.23±2.54 vs. 9.64±1.86, P=0.027）, greater fibre diameter （in pm, 1.32±0.02 vs. 1.20±0.04, P=0.021）, greater axon diameter （in μm, 0.92±0.01 vs. 0.89±0.03, P=-0.035） and lower g-ratio （0.69±0.01 vs. 0.74±0.01, P=-0.033） in the apical region around the implants.
