Gripping devices help patients carry out everyday tasks and increase their ***,there seems to be a lack of bionic gripping technologies that can fully adapt to any possible shape,as the use of artificial fingers and predetermined grip settings limits the operating *** development of a more agile device,which is operated by a simple control paradigm,could greatly benefit *** electrorheological(ER)fluid system should be able to adapt to the shape of an object and then hold that *** aim of this study was to explore if a conceptual prototype of an ER system could hold a geometric shape when it is activated.A test rig was constructed with a moving part(set in different silicone oils)that could be displaced using a *** particles were dispersed in the silicone oils,and a field with a voltage of 4 kV mm?1 was generated to activate the *** results show that the developed system can support an increased force when activated and hold a simple geometric position without any noticeable *** outcome provides an initial proof of concept for a possible new(gravity-assisted)gripping approach using smart fluids,which could be developed with materials that are biocompatible and widely available.

BACKGROUND Sustained injury,through radiotherapy,burns or surgical trauma,can result in fibrosis,displaying an excessive deposition of extracellular matrix(ECM),persisting inflammatory reaction,and reduced *** increasing recognition of fibrosis as a cause for disease and mortality,and increasing use of radiotherapy causing fibrosis,stresses the importance of a decent anti-fibrotic *** To obtain an in-depth understanding of the complex mechanisms underlying fibrosis,and more specifically,the potential mechanisms-of-action of adiposederived stomal cells(ADSCs)in realizing their anti-fibrotic *** A systematic review of the literature using PubMed,Embase and Web of Science was performed by two independent *** The injection of fat grafts into fibrotic tissue,releases ADSC into the ***’capacity to directly differentiate into key cell types(e.g.,ECs,fibroblasts),as well as to secrete multiple paracrine factors(e.g.,hepatocyte growth factor,basis fibroblast growth factor,IL-10),allows them to alter different mechanisms underlying fibrosis in a combined *** favor ECM degradation by impacting the fibroblast-to-myofibroblast differentiation,favoring matrix metalloproteinases over tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases,positively influencing collagen organization,and inhibiting the pro-fibrotic effects of transforming growth factor-β***,they impact elements of both the innate and adaptive immune response system,and stimulate angiogenesis on the site of injury(through secretion of pro-angiogenic cytokines like stromal cell-derived factor-1 and vascular endothelial growth factor).CONCLUSION This review shows that understanding the complex interactions of ECM accumulation,immune response and vascularization,is vital to fibrosis treatments’effectiveness like fat *** details how ADSCs intelligently steer this complex system in an anti-fibrotic or pro-angiogenic direction,without falling in

We provide an introduction to the use of the spectral-elementmethod (SEM)in seismology. Following a brief review of the basic equations that govern seismicwave propagation, we discuss in some detail how these equations may be solved numericallybased upon the SEM to address the forward problem in seismology. Examplesof synthetic seismograms calculated based upon the SEM are compared to datarecorded by the Global Seismographic Network. Finally, we discuss the challenge ofusing the remaining differences between the data and the synthetic seismograms toconstrain better Earth models and source descriptions. This leads naturally to adjointmethods, which provide a practical approach to this formidable computational challengeand enables seismologists to tackle the inverse problem.

The Unsteady Adaptive Stochastic Finite Elements(UASFE)approach is a robust and efficient uncertainty quantification method for resolving the effect of random parameters in unsteady *** this paper,it is shown that the underlying Adaptive Stochastic Finite Elements(ASFE)method for steady problems based on Newton-Cotes quadrature in simplex elements is extrema diminishing(ED).It is also shown that the method is total variation diminishing(TVD)for one random parameter and for multiple random parameters for first degree Newton-Cotes *** is proven that the interpolation of oscillatory samples at constant phase in the UASFE method for unsteady problems results in a bounded error as function of the phase for periodic responses and under certain conditions also in a bounded error in *** two methods are applied to a steady transonic airfoil flow and a transonic airfoil flutter problem.
