For some 20 years, the rate of investment by EU enterprises into China has been rising, reaching an annual average of some Us$5bn over the 10 years to 2009. Conversely, the EU has not been a focus for Chinese investments, nor has Chinese investment been important to the EU despite the wide attention given to recent landmark cross-border acquisitions. Therefore, the overall impact of Chinese investment on the European economy is small. However, this situation might now be changing following institutional changes in the EU. In light of the potential for Chinese foreign direct investment to the EU, in this paper we outline the motives for, and patterns of Chinese outward investments to the EU, and the impacts that these investments might exert on the recipient.

Economic analysis of atmospheric mercury emission control for coal-fired power plants in China

Coal combustion and mercury pollution are closely linked, and this relationship is particularly relevant in China, the world＇s largest coal consumer. This paper begins with a summary of recent China-specific studies on mercury removal by air pollution control technologies and then provides an economic analysis of mercury abatement from these emission control technologies at coal-fired power plants in China. This includes a cost-effectiveness analysis at the enterprise and sector level in China using 2010 as a baseline and projecting out to 2020 and2030. Of the control technologies evaluated, the most cost-effective is a fabric filter installed upstream of the wet flue gas desulfurization system（FF ＋ WFGD）. Halogen injection（HI） is also a cost-effective mercury-specific control strategy, although it has not yet reached commercial maturity. The sector-level analysis shows that 193 tons of mercury was removed in 2010 in China＇s coal-fired power sector, with annualized mercury emission control costs of 2.7 billion Chinese Yuan. Under a projected 2030 Emission Control（EC） scenario with stringent mercury limits compared to Business As Usual（BAU） scenario, the increase of selective catalytic reduction systems（sCR） and the use of HI could contribute to 39 tons of mercury removal at a cost of 3.8 billion CNY. The economic analysis presented in this paper offers insights on air pollution control technologies and practices for enhancing atmospheric mercury control that can aid decision-making in policy design and private-sector investments.

Reimagining Modern Education: Contributions from Modern Japanese Philosophy and Practice?

By the 1930's vast areas of the western Us were severely degraded by overgrazing and *** response,Congress authorized conservation work including the construction of erosion control and water storage,distribution,and conveyance *** of structures such as check dams,water spreaders,and contour berms were built during the 1930s and 40s to control water and sediment in an attempt to restore degraded ***,across most of the western Us,these soil and water conservation measures were implemented without the benefit of local hydrologic data or technical design *** of the established conservation practices had been developed for humid regions and were untested for use in semiarid areas that are characterized by highly variable rainfall and flash *** a result,many structures proved ineffective and were subsequently *** in cases where structures were effective,many never received maintenance after their initial *** structurally compromised,abandoned and unmaintained structures continue to alter surface runoff patterns and can greatly exacerbate *** sites in Arizona,UsA were selected to charac-terize the multi-decadal impacts of conservation *** have formed in 100%of contour berms(n=67)while 96%of water spreader berms(n=26)were *** failures in these structures has created concentrated flow paths that reorganized routing of runoff and sediment thus transforming sheetflow regimes to concentrated flow *** study emphasizes the unin-tended legacy impacts of soil and water conservation structures and highlights their role as a potential constraint on contemporary resource management.

Purification of single-walled Carbon Nanotubes Grown by a Chemical Vapour Deposition(CVD) Method

A procedure for purification of single walled carbon nanotubes(sWNTs) grown by the chemical vapour deposition(CVD) of carbon monooxide has been developed. Based on the result from TGA/DTA of as prepared sample, the oxidation temperature was determined. The process included sonication, oxidation and acid washing steps. The purity and yield after purification were determined and estimated by TEM. Moreover, for the first time, a loop structure for CVD sWNTs has been observed.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the 3sup>rdsup> most common cancer in the United states with more than 10000 new cases diagnosed annually. Approximately 20% of patients with CRC will have distant metastasis at time of diagnosis, making them poor candidates for primary surgical resection. similarly, 8%-25% of patients with CRC will present with bowel obstruction and will require palliative therapy. Emergent surgical decompression has a high mortality and morbidity, and often leads to a colostomy which impairs the patient’s quality of life. In the last decade, there has been an increasing use of colonic stents for palliative therapy to relieve malignant colonic obstruction. Colonic stents have been shown to be effective and safe to treat obstruction from CRC, and are now the therapy of choice in this scenario. In the setting of an acute bowel obstruction in patients with potentially resectable colon cancer, stents may be used to delay surgery and thus allow for decompression, adequate bowel preparation, and optimization of the patient’s condition for curative surgical intervention. An overall complication rate (major and minor) of up to 25% has been associated with the procedure. Long term failure of stents may result from stent migration and tumor ingrowth. In the majority of cases, repeat stenting or surgical intervention can successfully overcome these adverse effects.
