Neurogenesis is a persistent and essential feature of the adult mammalian *** neurons generated from resident pools of stem or progenitor cells provide a mechanism for the formation and consolidation of new *** of hippocampal neurogenesis is complex and multifaceted,and numerous signaling pathways converge to modulate cell proliferation,apoptosis,and clearance of cellular debris,as well as synaptic integration of newborn immature *** expression of functional P2X7 receptors in the central nervous system has attracted much interest and the regulatory role of this purinergic receptor during adult neurogenesis has only recently begun to be explored.P2X7 receptors are exceptionally versatile:in their canonical role they act as adenosine triphosphate-gated calcium channels and facilitate calcium-signaling cascades exerting control over the cell via calcium-encoded sensory proteins and transcription factor activation.P2X7 also mediates transmembrane pore formation to regulate cytokine release and facilitate extracellular communication,and when persistently stimulated by high extracellular adenosine triphosphate levels large P2X7 pores form,which induce apoptotic cell death through cytosolic ion ***,as a scavenger receptor P2X7 directly facilitates phagocytosis of the cellular debris that arises during neurogenesis,as well as during some disease *** how P2X7 receptors regulate the physiology of stem and progenitor cells in the adult hippocampus is an important step towards developing useful therapeutic models for regenerative *** review considers the relevant aspects of adult hippocampal neurogenesis and explores how P2X7 receptor activity may influence the molecular physiology of the hippocampus,and neural stem and progenitor cells.

Recovery rates of combination antibiotic therapy using in vitro microdialysis simulating in vivo conditions

Microdialysis is a technique used to measure the unbound antibiotic concentration in the interstitial spaces, the target site of action. In vitro recovery studies are essential to calibrating the microdialysis system for in vivo studies. The effect of a combination of antibiotics on recovery into microdialysate requires investigation. In vitro microdialysis recovery studies were conducted on a combination of vancomycin and tobramycin, in a simulated in vivo model. Comparison was made between recoveries for three different concentrations and three different perfusate flow rates. The overall relative recovery for vancomycin was lower than that of tobramycin. For tobramycin, a concentration of 20μg/mL and flow rate of 1.0μL/min had the best recovery. A concentration of 5.0μg/mL and flow rate of 1.0μL/min yielded maximal recovery for vancomycin. Large molecular size and higher protein binding resulted in lower relative recoveries for vancomycin. Perfusate flow rates and drug concentrations affected the relative recovery when a combination of vancomycin and tobramycin was tested. Low perfusate flow rates were associated with higher recovery rates. For combination antibiotic measurement which includes agents that are highly protein bound, in vitro studies performed prior to in vivo studies may ensure the reliable measurement of unbound concentrations.

High-performance carbon fiber/gold/copper composite wires for lightweight electrical cables

In this study,we synthesized high-performance Carbon Fiber/Gold/Copper(CF/Au/Cu)composite wires by using a 2-step deposition method via sputtering and *** Au was sputtered on PANbased CFs as a pre-treatment,the wettability and surface reactivity of the CFs were improved,resulting in a homogeneous deposition of Cu on their *** different Cu electrodeposition time,the resulting CF/Au/Cu composite wires could possess a high strength of up to 3.27 GPa(~10 times stronger than copper wires)while their electrical conductivity could be as high as 4.4×10^5 s/cm(~75%of that for copper).More importantly,since the composite wires were lightweight(up to 70%lower than Cu mass density),they are a promising candidate to substitute conventional heavy metal wires in the future electrical applications.

Rapid synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenide-carbon aerogel composites for supercapacitor electrodes

Transition metal dichalcogenide(TMD)materials have recently demonstrated exceptional supercapacitor properties after conversion to a metallic phase,which increases the conductivity of the ***,freestanding,exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenide films exhibit surface areas far below their theoretical maximum(1.2%),can fail during electrochemical operation due to poor mechanical properties,and often require pyrophoric chemicals to *** the other hand,pyrolyzed carbon aerogels exhibit extraordinary specific surface areas for double layer capacitance,high conductivity,and a strong mechanical network of covalent chemical *** this paper,we demonstrate the scalable,rapid nanomanufacturing of TMD(Mos2 and Ws2)and carbon aerogel composites,favoring liquid-phase exfoliation to avoid pyrophoric *** aerogel matrix support enhances conductivity of the composite and the synthesis can complete in 30 *** find that the addition of transition metal dichalcogenides does not impact the structure of the aerogel,which maintains a high specific surface area up to 620 m^(2) g−1 with peak pore radii of 10 *** supercapacitor tests of the aerogels yield capacitances around 80 F g^(−1) at the lowest applied currents,the aerogels loaded with TMD’s exhibit volumetric capacitances up to 127% greater than the unloaded *** addition,the Ws2 aerogels show excellent cycling stability with no capacitance loss over 2000 cycles,as well as markedly better rate capability and lower charge transfer resistance compared to their Mos2-loaded *** hypothesize that these differences in performance stem from differences in contact resistance and in the favorability of ion adsorption on the chalcogenides.

symbiotic associations between mammals and fungi have been well documented and are widely regarded as vital to ecosystem functions around the *** between birds and fungi are also ecologically vital but have been far less thoroughly *** manuscript is the first to review a wide range of symbiotic associations between birds and *** compile the largest list to date of bird species reported to eat fungi(54 bird species in 27 families)and follow up with a discussion of these symbioses and suggestions for how future studies can determine the prevalence of associations between birds and *** review the importance of fungi for cavity-excavating birds and show that at least 30 bird species in three families form varying levels of associations with fungi for cavity *** also review the use of fungal rhizomorphs in nest construction and show that 176 bird species in 37 families use fungal material in their *** of these interactions have wide-reaching ecosystem implications,particularly in regard to fungal dispersal and biogeography,plant health,ecosystem function,bird nutrition/fitness and bird behaviour.

Mid-infrared-perturbed molecular vibrational signatures in plasmonic nanocavities

Recent developments in surface-enhanced Raman scattering(sERs)enable observation of single-bond vibrations in real time at room *** contrast,mid-infrared(MIR)vibrational spectroscopy is limited to inefficient slow *** we develop a new method for MIR sensing using *** method utilizes nanoparticle-on-foil(NPoF)nanocavities supporting both visible and MIR plasmonic hotspots in the same nanogap formed by a monolayer of *** sERs signals from individual NPoF nanocavities are modulated in the presence of MIR *** strength of this modulation depends on the MIR wavelength,and is maximized at the 6–12μm absorption bands of siO_(2) or polystyrene placed under the *** a single-photon lock-in detection scheme we time-resolve the rise and decay of the signal in a few 100 *** observations reveal that the phonon resonances of siO_(2) can trap intense MIR surface plasmons within the Reststrahlen band,tuning the visible-wavelength localized plasmons by reversibly perturbing the localized few-nm-thick water shell trapped in the nanostructure *** suggests new ways to couple nanoscale bond vibrations for optomechanics,with potential to push detection limits down to single-photon and single-molecule regimes.

Effects of OFDI on Employment and skill Upgrading in Its Home Economy

This research empirically examines the relationship between outward foreign direct investment （OFDI） and employment in its home economy. It is marked out from existing studies in the following three respects. First, instead of advanced economies, it focuses on the effect on employment in a newly industrialized economy. second, it not only addresses the general issue of whether employment or production overseas complements or substitutes for employment in parent companies but also examines how OFDI contributes to skill upgrading in its origin economy, in addition to the quantitative effect. Third, this paper allows the results to vary between labour-intensive industries and technology-intensive industries in order to find the extent to which the home employment effect is moderated by industrial technology intensity. The results demonstrate that the location of investment and industry characteristics matter for explaining the effect of OFDI on home employment. specifically, we find that while OFDI by Taiwan＇s multinationals in the Chinese mainland depresses employment in Taiwan in both labour- and technology-intensive industries, OFDI in other economies only produces a negative employment effect in technology-intensive sectors. An interesting finding of this study is the evidence of positive effects of OFDI on skill upgrading in Taiwan. This paper supports the argument that relocation of productivity overseas axes low-skilled workers at home. Moreover, OFDI in the Chinese mainland has a particular positive impact on skill upgrading in the home industry, lending support to the view that multinational enterprises （MNEs） outsource labour-intensive goods from their affiliates in low-income economies.
