Recovery rates of persistent post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction using psychophysical assessment:A longitudinal cohort study

Objectives:persistent olfactory dysfunction(OD)following loss of smell associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection is a major feature of long *** on the prevalence of persistent OD predominantly rely on self-reported olfactory *** studies have tracked longitudinal rates of recovery using psychophysical assessment among patients presenting for evaluation of persistent OD beyond a window of acute *** anchored in standardized testing methods are needed to counsel patients who fail to acutely regain their sense of *** study aims to quantify the degree of persistent OD in post-COVID-19 patients who experience subjective and psychophysical ***:We grouped participants presenting for OD evaluation into cohorts based on both subjective and psychophysical olfactory status at a baseline assessment and assessed their olfactory abilities with a visual analogue scale and the Sniffin'Sticks extended test at baseline and 1-year time *** had confirmed a history of COVID-19 by lab evaluation or clinical diagnosis if lab evaluation was not ***:Baseline olfactory evaluation was completed by 122 participants,53 of whom completed the 1-year follow-up *** participants presenting with perceived OD,74.5%had confirmed psychophysical OD at baseline,with 55.1%at 1-year *** had reliable trends in self-rated versus psychophysically tested olfactory function at both time *** total threshold,discrimination,and identification(TDI)score improved by+3.25 points in the cohort with psychophysical OD(p=0.0005),with this improvement largely attributable to an increase in median threshold scores(+2.75 points;p=0.0004).Conclusions:OD persists in a significant number of patients who fail to acutely recovery their sense of smell after COVID-19,with many demonstrating lingering deficits at *** in threshold,but not discrimination or identification,most significantly mediate improvement

The reproductive biology of a Central American cichlid Neetroplus nematopus in Lake Xiloá ,Nicaragua

This study was conducted to provide a five-year database on the breeding seasonality and breeding biology of a Central American cichlid fish Neetroplus nematopus, a biparental substratum-spawning cichlid that cares for its eggs, wrigglers, and fry for up to six weeks. A total of 503 breeding pairs were monitored for breeding success. Breeding pairs of N. nematopus are sexually dimorphic in size, with females averaging 39% of male body mass. Fry emerged from 85% of nesting cavities. After three weeks, only 30% of the broods were present in the nesting cavity; these broods had a 30% survival rate, giving a 9% overall survival rate. Nineteen percent of the successful parents with three-week-old broods adopted foreign fry. A consistent unimodal breeding peak in December was observed for five years. This breeding peak differed dramatically from the bimodal breeding season 20 years found in the 1970s. The effects of extensive grenade fishing practices during the 1980s might have played a substantial role in the observed change. Grenade fishing stopped in 1991, and the number ofN. nematopus pairs increased by 136% from 1990 to 1995. With increased density of breeding fish, the breeding season for this species also expanded. The balance between divergent selection due to competition for breeding sites and stabilizing selection due to predation pressure on offspring is likely to mold the breeding season for N. nematopus and other cichlids of Lake Xilofi. We suggest that brood adoption and synchrony of breeding is a strategy to reduce predation on the parent＇s own young [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 43-51 2010].

pancreatic cancer and its stroma: A conspiracy theory

pancreatic cancer is characterised by a prominent desmoplastic/stromal reaction that has received little attention until recent times. Given that treatments focusing on pancreatic cancer cells alone have failed to significantly improve patient outcome over many decades, research efforts have now moved to understanding the pathophysiology of the stromal reaction and its role in cancer progression. In this regard, our Group was the first to identify the cells(pancreatic stellate cells, pSCs) that produced the collagenous stroma of pancreatic cancer and to demonstrate that these cells interacted closely with cancer cells to facilitate local tumour growth and distant metastasis. Evidence is accumulating to indicate that stromal pSCs may also mediate angiogenesis, immune evasion and the well known resistance of pancreatic cancer to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This review will summarise current knowledge regarding the critical role of pancreatic stellate cells and the stroma in pancreatic cancer biologyand the therapeutic approaches being developed to target the stroma in a bid to improve the outcome of this devastating disease.

STAT3 mediates C6-ceramide-induced cell death in chronic lymphocytic leukemia

A Time Neighborhood Method for the Verification of Landfalling Typhoon Track Forecast

Landfalling typhoons can cause disasters over large *** government and emergency responders need to take measures to mitigate disasters according to the forecast of landfall position,while slight timing error can be *** reliability of operational model forecasts of typhoon landfall position needs to be evaluated beforehand,according to the forecasts and observation of historical *** the evaluation of landfalling typhoon track,the traditional method based on point-to-point matching methods could be influenced by the predicted typhoon translation ***,the traditional track evaluation method may result in a large track error even if the predicted landfall position is close to *** purpose of this paper is to address the above issue using a simple evaluation method of landfalling typhoon track forecast based on the time neighborhood *** this new method,the timing error was lessened to highlight the importance of the position error during the landfall of *** properties of the time neighborhood method are compared with the traditional method based on numerical forecast results of 12 landfalling typhoon *** demonstrated that the new method is not sensitive to the sampling frequency,and that the difference between the time neighborhood and traditional method will be more obvious when the moving speed of typhoon is moderate(between 15−30 km h^(−1)).The time neighborhood concept can be easily extended to a broader context when one attempts to examine the position error more than the timing error.

Does bilateral otosclerosis make pre-operative bone conduction more inaccurate?

Objectives:To assess whether bilateral otosclerosis renders pre-operative bone conduction more inaccurate by increasing the Carhart ***:Retrospective review of a database of pre and post-operative audiograms of 745 ears with otosclerosis treated with stapedectomy from 2013 to 2020 in a tertiary *** outcome measures:Change in bone conduction after stapedectomy for otosclerosis in:unilateral otosclerosis(U1);bilateral otosclerosis undergoing first side surgery(B1);bilateral otosclerosis undergoing second side surgery(B2).The magnitude of change in bone conduction post-operatively within and between each ***:The average difference in pre and post-operative bone conduction was significant within in all groups(T-stat>2 and p-valueps did not reach statistical significance(pvalue=0.37).Analysis of change per frequency demonstrated the greatest change in bone conduction post-operatively at 2000 Hz in all *** magnitude of change at 2000 Hz was the greatest in the bilateral groups;however,it did not reach statistical significance when compared to the unilateral group(p-value=0.36).Conclusions:This is the first study in the literature to assess the accuracy of pre-operative bone conduction in bilateral versus unilateral *** is no evidence that pre-operative bone conduction in bilateral otosclerosis is more inaccurate than in unilateral *** order to assess accuracy of pre-operative bone conduction in otosclerosis a reliable method of assessing post-operative bone conduction is required,without assumption of its equivalence to cochlear reserve.

T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase(TC-pTp)has a critical role in the development of the immune system and has been identified as a negative regulator of ***-nucleotide polymorphisms in the TC-pTp locus have been associated with increased susceptibility to inflammatory bowel diseases(IBDs)in *** further understand how TC-pTp is related to IBDs,we investigated the role of TC-pTp in maintaining the intestinal epithelial barrier using an in vivo genetic *** epithelial cell(IEC)-specific deletion of TC-pTp was achieved in a mouse model at steady state and in the context of dextran sulphate sodium(DSS)-induced ***(KO)of TC-pTp in IECs did not result in an altered intestinal ***,upon DSS treatment,IECspecific TC-pTp KO mice displayed a more severe colitis phenotype with a corresponding increase in the immune response and inflammatory cytokine *** absence of TC-pTp caused an altered turnover of IECs,which is further explained by the role of the tyrosine phosphatase in colonic stem cell(CoSC)*** results suggest a novel role for TC-pTp in regulating the homeostasis of CoSC *** supports the protective function of TC-pTp against IBDs,independently of its previously demonstrated role in intestinal immunity.
