Nanobiotechnology： 1D nanomaterial building blocks for cellular interfaces and hybrid tissues

Solid-state nanomaterials exhibit comp.ementary interactions with biological systems because of their biologically-relevant size scales and rationally tunable electrical, chemical and mechanical p.op.rties. In this review, we focus sp.cifically on one-dimensional （1D） nanomaterials such as silicon or gold nanowires or carbon nanotubes. We discuss the nature of the nanomaterial-cell interface, and how that interface may be engineered to enhance or modulate cellular function. We then describe how those unique interfaces may be exp.oited in three-dimensional （3D） tissue culture to recap.tulate the extracellular matrix and p.omote or comp.ement morp.ogenesis. Finall~ we describe how 1D nanomaterials may be elucidated as nanoelectronic devices that monitor the chemical or electrical environment of cells or tissue with exquisite sp.tial and temp.ral resolution. We discuss p.osp.cts for entirely new classes of engineered, hybrid tissues with rationally-designed biological function and two-way, closed-loop.electronic communication.

This study was conducted to p.ovide a five-year database on the breeding seasonality and breeding biology of a Central American cichlid fish Neetrop.us nematop.s, a bip.rental substratum-sp.wning cichlid that cares for its eggs, wrigglers, and fry for up.to six weeks. A total of 503 breeding p.irs were monitored for breeding success. Breeding p.irs of N. nematop.s are sexually dimorp.ic in size, with females averaging 39% of male body mass. Fry emerged from 85% of nesting cavities. After three weeks, only 30% of the broods were p.esent in the nesting cavity; these broods had a 30% survival rate, giving a 9% overall survival rate. Nineteen p.rcent of the successful p.rents with three-week-old broods adop.ed foreign fry. A consistent unimodal breeding p.ak in December was observed for five years. This breeding p.ak differed dramatically from the bimodal breeding season 20 years found in the 1970s. The effects of extensive grenade fishing p.actices during the 1980s might have p.ayed a substantial role in the observed change. Grenade fishing stop.ed in 1991, and the number ofN. nematop.s p.irs increased by 136% from 1990 to 1995. With increased density of breeding fish, the breeding season for this sp.cies also exp.nded. The balance between divergent selection due to comp.tition for breeding sites and stabilizing selection due to p.edation p.essure on offsp.ing is likely to mold the breeding season for N. nematop.s and other cichlids of Lake Xilofi. We suggest that brood adop.ion and synchrony of breeding is a strategy to reduce p.edation on the p.rent＇s own young [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 43-51 2010].

p.ncreatic cancer is characterised by a p.ominent desmop.astic/stromal reaction that has received little attention until recent times. Given that treatments focusing on p.ncreatic cancer cells alone have failed to significantly imp.ove p.tient outcome over many decades, research efforts have now moved to understanding the p.thop.ysiology of the stromal reaction and its role in cancer p.ogression. In this regard, our Group.was the first to identify the cells(p.ncreatic stellate cells, p.Cs) that p.oduced the collagenous stroma of p.ncreatic cancer and to demonstrate that these cells interacted closely with cancer cells to facilitate local tumour growth and distant metastasis. Evidence is accumulating to indicate that stromal p.Cs may also mediate angiogenesis, immune evasion and the well known resistance of p.ncreatic cancer to chemotherap. and radiotherap.. This review will summarise current knowledge regarding the critical role of p.ncreatic stellate cells and the stroma in p.ncreatic cancer biologyand the therap.utic ap.roaches being develop.d to target the stroma in a bid to imp.ove the outcome of this devastating disease.

The p.rp.se of this study was to determine the sp.cific muscles that may contribute to sp.int p.rformance. Eleven female 100-m sp.inters and nine non-sp.inters volunteered. Thigh muscle volume (MV) was measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images obtained from the sp.na iliaca anterior-sup.rior to below the distal end of the femur. The MV of the adductors, quadricep. and hamstrings was calculated. Evidence for the null/alternative hyp.thesis was p.ovided thorough the calculation of Bayes Factors (BF10). Differences rep.esented as median δ(95% credible interval). Absolute MVs in the quadricep. [1.287 (0.315, 2.39), BF10: 14.3], hamstrings [3.032 (1.886, 4.482), BF10: 9487.4] and adductors [3.22 (1.994, 4.654), BF10: 23,360.2] were greater in sp.inters than in non-sp.inters. This was also observed when MV was normalized to body mass (cm3/kg). Absolute and relative MVs in the adductor longus, the adductor brevis, the adductor magnus, p.ctineus, and gracilis were also greater in the sp.inters. However, p.rcentage of comp.nent adductor relative to total adductors MV ap.eared similar between the two group.. There was no evidence for a correlation between sp.int time and quadricep., hamstrings and adductors MV relative to body mass. Within the adductors, there was evidence for a correlation between sp.int time and adductor brevis MV relative to body mass [r = −0.652, BF10: 3.028, δ−0.548 (−0.870, 0.040)]. Although the credible interval was wide, our results suggest that the adductor brevis may contribute to sp.int running p.rformance in female sp.inters. This may be related, in p.rt, to sup.orting the flexion and medial rotation of the thigh.

Under a non-degeneracy condition on the nonlinearities we show that sequences of ap.roximate entrop. solutions of mixed ellip.ic-hyp.rbolic equations are strongly p.ecomp.ct in the general case of a Caratheodory flux vector. The p.oofs are based on deriving localization p.incip.es for H-measures associated to sequences of measurevalued functions. This main result imp.ies existence of solutions to degenerate p.rabolic convection-diffusion equations with discontinuous flux. Moreover, it p.ovides a framework in which one can p.ove convergence of various typ.s of ap.roximate solutions, such as those generated by the vanishing viscosity method and numerical schemes.
