Tissue distribution of perfluoroalkyl acids and health status in wild Mozambique tilapia(Oreochromis mossambicus) from Loskop Dam, Mpumalanga, South Africa

This study examined concentrations of 15 perfluoroalkyl acids（PFAAs） in tissues from male Mozambique tilapia（Oreochromis mossambicus） collected at Loskop Dam, Mpumalanga,South Africa in 2014 and 2016. Nine of the 15 PFAAs were detected frequently and were included in statistical analysis and included two of the most commonly known PFAAs,perfluorooctanesulfonic acid（PFOS）（median, 41.6 ng/g） and perfluorooctanoic acid（PFOA）（median, 0.0825 ng/g）. Of the tissues measured, plasma（2016 and 2014 median, 22.2 ng/g）contained the highest PFAA burden followed by（in descending order）： liver（median,11.6 ng/g）, kidney（median, 9.04 ng/g）, spleen（median, 5.92 ng/g）, adipose（median, 2.54 ng/g）, and muscle（median, 1.11 ng/g）. Loskop Dam tilapia have been affected by an inflammatory disease of the adipose tissue known as pansteatitis, so this study also aimed to investigate relationships between PFAA tissue concentrations and incidence of pansteatitis or fish health status. Results revealed that healthy tilapia exhibited an overall higher（p-value 〈 0.05） PFAA burden than pansteatitis-affected tilapia across all *** analysis showed that organs previously noted in the literature to contain the highest PFAA concentrations, such as kidney, liver, and plasma, were the organs driving the difference in PFAA burden between the two tilapia groups. Care must be taken in the interpretations we draw from not only the results of our study, but also other PFAA measurements made on populations（human and wildlife alike） under differing health status.

Examination of Sexually Dimorphic Behavior on the Novel-Image Novel-Location Recognition Memory Test

Objectives: Sex differences in object location memory favoring females appear to be a replicable phenomenon but may also depend on the task demands. This investigation evaluated if females outperformed males at both a short (immediate) and long (half-hour) interval between the learn and test condition using a recently developed version of the Novel-Image Novel-Location (NINL) test (Piper et al. 2011, Physiology & Behavior, 103, 513 - 522). Methods: Young-adults (N = 184) completed a standardized handedness inventory and the NINL. Results: Participants assigned to the Immediate and Delayed conditions did not differ in age, sex, or handedness. The NINL total score was higher among females at the Immediate, but not Delayed, interval. However, within the Delayed condition, females excelled at correctly identifying the unchanged items with a similar pattern for the Novel-Location (NL) scale. Conclusion: These findings are consistent with the view that sexually dimorphic performance favoring females in neurocognitive function can also extend to tasks that have a spatial component.

In a recent study, Rafiei et al, reported a link between a C150T polymorphism in the human inducible nitric oxide gene and Helicobacter pylori infection as a risk factor for gastric cancer among an Iranian population. Subsequently, Abadi and Kusters published a letter to the editor questioning the validity of the study because of a supposed flaw in primer design. Here we respond to the claims of Abadi and Kusters and show that the results reported in the original article are valid.

The case of a 14 year old girl is reported, referred to Child Psychiatry with tearfulness and possible auditory hallucinations. Closer questioning revealed a history of low energy, sleeping excessively without refreshment, exertional dyspnoea, and poor growth. Psychologically, there was no evidence of low mood or negative cognitions despite the inexplicable tearfulness. Detailed enquiry revealed the “ hallucinations” to be “ whooshing” noises in her ears precipitated by standing. She was found to have a haemogl-obin level of 55 g/l, attributed to a combination of poor diet and menorrhagia. Periodic, anaemic, cerebral hypoxia could be proposed to be the root of most, if not all, of the symptoms, illustrating the importance of marrying physical and psychological history taking with suitable investigations for an eminently treatable condition.

Achieving ultrahigh strength and ductility in high-entropy alloys via dual precipitation

The strength-ductility trade-offhas been a longstanding dilemma in metallic *** we report an innovative approach to achieve a high strength-ductility synergy via dual precipitation of sheared and bypassed precipitates.(Ni_(2) Co_(2) FeCr)_(96-x) Al_(4) Nb_(x)(at.%)alloys strengthened by nanoscale L12 particles and Laves precipitates were selected as a model for this study,and their precipitate microstructures and mechanical properties were thoroughly *** dual-precipitation-strengthened alloys exhibit a yield strength of more than 1400 MPa,an ultimate tensile strength of over 1800 MPa,and a uniform elon-gation of 18%,thus achieving a high strength-ductility *** analysis reveals that the nanoscale L1_(2) precipitates contribute to the strength via the particle shearing mechanism,whereas the Laves phase provides the strengthening through the Orowan bypass *** study of deformation microstruc-tures shows that the L1_(2) precipitates are sheared by stacking faults,which facilitates long-range disloca-tion gliding through the *** a result,deformation induces the formation of hierarchical stacking fault networks and immobile Lomer-cottrell locks,which effectively enhance the work hardening ca-pability and plastic stability,thereby resulting in a high ductility at high strength *** are piled-up against the interface between the Laves precipitates and matrix,which increases the work hardening capability at the early stages of plastic deformation but causes stress *** dual precipitation strategy may be useful for many other alloys for achieving superior mechanical properties for technological applications.

A comparison of survival and pathologic features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and hepatitis C virus patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM:To compare the clinical outcome and pathologic features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and hepatitic C virus(HCV) patients with HCC(another group in which HCC is commonly seen) undergoing liver ***:Patients transplanted for HCV and NASH at our institution from january 2000 to April 2011 were *** explanted liver histology and pre-transplant liver biopsies were examined by two specialist liver *** demographics,disease free survival,explant liver characteristics and HCC features(tumour number,cumulative tumour size,vascular invasion and differentiation) were compared between HCV and NASH liver transplant ***:A total of 102 patients with NASH and 283 patients with HCV were *** incidence of HCC in NASH transplant recipients was 16.7%(17/102).The incidence of HCC in HCV transplant recipients was 22.6%(64/283).Patients with NASH-HCC were statistically older than HCV-HCC patients(P < 0.001).A significantly higher proportion of HCV-HCC patients had vascular invasion(23.4% vs 6.4%,P = 0.002) and poorly differentiated HCC(4.7% vs 0%,P < 0.001) compared to the NASH-HCC group.A trend of poorer recurrence free survival at 5 years was seen in HCV-HCC patients compared to NASH-HCC who underwent a Liver transplantation(P = 0.11).CONCLUSION:Patients transplanted for NASH-HCC appear to have less aggressive tumour features compared to those with HCV-HCC,which likely in part accounts for their improved recurrence free survival.

Brown Trout Spawn Timing, Redd Locations, and Stream Characteristics in Spearfish Creek within Spearfish, South Dakota, USA

This study documented brown trout (Salmo trutta) spawning locations, redd construction timing, and associated environmental variables in an 850-m long mainstem section and a 400-m long diversion channel of Spearfish Creek within the city limits of Spearfish, South Dakota, USA in 2019. The first redds were observed on October 15, with no new redds observed after November 12. Redd construction peaked during the first week of November, when 23 redds were observed in the mainstem section and 50 in the diversion channel. Substrate size was significantly smaller, water temperatures significantly higher, and water velocities significantly greater in redd versus non-redd locations in both the mainstem reach and the diversion channel (P ˚C), but significant, increase in water temperature from the rest of the channel locations. This is the first study to document redd locations in Spearfish Creek and will provide a baseline to evaluate future spawning activity, particularly as it may be affected by likely future anthropogenic changes potentially affecting the stream environment.
