New Approach to Rock Classification Based on Sparse Representations

In geology, classification and lithological recognition of rocks plays an important role in the area of oil and gas exploration, mineral exploration and geological analysis. In other fields of activity such as construction and decoration, this classification makes sense and fully plays its role. However, this classification is slow, approximate and subjective. Automatic classification curbs this subjectivity and fills this gap by offering methods that reflect human perception. We propose a new approach to rock classification based on direct-view images of rocks. The aim is to take advantage of feature extraction methods to estimate a rock dictionary. In this work, we have developed a classification method obtained by concatenating four (4) K-SVD variants into a single signature. This method is based on the K-SVD algorithm combined with four (4) feature extraction techniques: DCT, Gabor filters, D-ALBPCSF and G-ALBPCSF, resulting in the four (4) variants named K-Gabor, K-DCT, KD-ALBPCSF and KD-ALBPCSF respectively. In this work, we developed a classification method obtained by concatenating four (4) variants of K-SVD. The performance of our method was evaluated on the basis of performance indicators such as accuracy with other 96% success rate.

Autoregressive neural networks with exogenous variables for indoor temperature prediction in buildings

Thermal models of buildings are helpful to forecast their energy use and to enhance the control of their mechanical ***,these models are building-specific and require a tedious,error-prone and time-consuming development effort relying on skilled building energy *** to white-box and gray-box models,data-driven(black-box)models require less development time and a minimal amount of information about the building *** this paper,autoregressive neural network models are compared to gray-box and black-box linear models to simulate indoor *** models are trained,validated and compared to actual experimental data obtained for an existing commercial building in Montreal(QC,Canada)equipped with roof top units for air *** show that neural networks mimic more accurately the thermal behavior of the building when limited information is available,compared to gray-box and black-box linear *** gray-box model does not perform adequately due to its under-parameterized nature,while the linear models cannot capture non-linear phenomena such as radiative heat transfer and ***,the neural network models outperform the alternative models in the presented application,reaching a coefficient of determination R2 up to 0.824 and a root mean square error down to 1.11℃,including the error propagation over time for a 1-week period with a 5-minute *** considering a 50-hour time horizon,the best neural networks reach a much lower root mean square error of around 0.6℃,which is suitable for applications such as model predictive control.

Missed Opportunities for Vaccination and Associated Factors among Children Aged 12 - 23 Months in Cameroon: Further Analyses of 2018 Cameroon Demographic and Health Survey

Background: Low vaccination coverage has been attributed to missed opportunities for vaccination (MOV). This study examines the prevalence of MOV, and its associated factors among children in Cameroon. methods: Data from the 2018 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) was analyzed for children with at least one vaccination date in the home-based record (HBR). Immunization performances such as accessibility, drop-out, and timeliness, were assessed. Service quality was assessed using MOV. Multiple logistic regression examined the effect of DHS variables on MOV outcomes, and a decision tree approach was used to study their interaction. Results: Overall, 1824 children aged 12 to 23 months were surveyed;1285 (70.45%) had cards seen with vaccination dates leading to 85.03% of immunization activities. A proportion of 46.5% of children were not completely vaccinated. There was 27% of drop-out between BCG and MCV1, and less than 10% with the specific antigens. Vaccination timeliness proportions ranged from 42.18% for BGC to less than 70% for PENTA1-3. The national prevalence of MOV for simultaneous vaccines was 75.1% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 72;79). Among those who experienced MOV, 67.4% (95% CI = 60 - 73) were uncorrected MOV. MOV was an issue in all regions and comparable in rural areas that urban areas (p = 0.2). Dose-specific MOV ranged from 2.66% (for the third dose of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) to 91.12 (for the yellow fever vaccine). Second birth order children experienced more MOV than first born children (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.11 - 2.47). Children born to non-educated/primary level mothers had increased odds of experiencing a MOV than those born to educated mothers (aOR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.007 - 2.19/aOR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.12 - 2.09). Children from poorest households were at high risk of experiencing MOV for any vaccine than richest households (aOR = 2.04, 95% CI = 1.11 - 3.76). Influence of Different Environments on Germination Parameters and Seedling Morphology in Khaya senegalensis(Desr.) A. Juss (meliaceae)

Khaya senegalensis is one of the largest and most majestic trees in Africa. Overexploited for its precious wood and medicinal values, the natural stands of this species are in danger of extinction in Cote d’Ivoire. Its sustainable management through regeneration techniques and assessment of its degree of adaptation to the changing climate is necessary. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different environments on seedling germination and development in Khaya senegalensis. A total of 2160 seeds from different mother plants and 540 individuals from seed germination were selected and evaluated. The trials were conducted on three sites that were distinct by their microclimate (two nurseries in Cote d’Ivoire and one greenhouse in France). Analysis of variance showed that germination and morphology parameters were not influenced by the characteristics of the mother plants used (p > 0.05), but rather by the study sites (P me (12.66 ± 0.80 days), germination delay (16.96 96 ± 0.54 days), germination speed (19.66 ± 2.95 days), germination duration (10.83 ± 2.27 days) and germination rate (88.88 ± 7.97) with more vigorous sowing than the other two sites. The results showed in general that the higher the height of the seedlings, the thicker the diameter of the seedlings (r = 0.796) and the higher the number of leaves (r = 0.946). This savannah species is native to the arid zones of Africa, but this study highlighted its adaptive potential to changing and different climates. The fungitoxicity of five Malagasy essential oils (Eos) against Colletotrichum asianum was assessed in terms of conidial germination and mycelial growth. Their effect on defense-related compounds content, physicochemical properties and anthracnose lesions in mango fruits was also determined. Interpretation of primary growth markers (modules) is neglected in sustainable resource management processes, yet it opens up prospects for long time series on tree crown development, necessary for their characterization in the current context of climate change. This study aimed to assess the morphological variation of crown shoots in Parkia biglobosa in the face of a changing environment. Axis growth modules of 420 individuals of different ages were retrospectively analyzed in the presence or absence of shading during the wet and dry seasons in seven localities in Cote d’Ivoire. The results showed that the developmental environment of individuals did not influence the growth modules dimensions (P > 0.05). However, module size remained significantly different between locations (P Parkia biglobosa is a monochasial sympod (Pseudo-monopod) with a relay axis that follows the Paul Champagnat architectural model in the young stage, and transits to the Wilhelm Troll model later in the adult and old stage. This information contributes to the understanding of the functioning of crown and the adaptation of this species to a varying environment. It could guide choice of suitable environment and ideal genotype for the implementation of a reforestation or agroforestry programme based on Parkia biglobosa.

Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency: Difficulties in Diagnosis at the Souro Sanou University Hospital, Burkina Faso

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is the most common enzymopathy worldwide. The precise prevalence of G6PD is unknown in Burkina Faso. The objective of the study was to describe the difficulties to diagnose this disease at the Souro Sanou University hospital (CHUSS) in Bobo-Dioulasso. It involved five patients comprising one child with homozygous SS sickle cell disease, one adolescent screened following a family investigation, and three adults including a man and two women. Blood smear stained with May Grunwald Giemsa was performed to look for specific signs of G6PD-deficient red blood cell and brilliant cresyl Blue for Heinz Bodies. A microscope Olympus BX53 equipped with a Camera (XC10) and connected to a computer was used to read blood smears and capture images. Genes sequencing by Sanger method were performed in a specialized laboratory in molecular genetics. For each analysis, the protocol and instructions of the equipment and reagent manufacturer were applied. Of the five patients, three had anemia and only one had hyperreticulocytosis. Two patients had biological signs of hemolysis and one patient had an elevated CRP. Blood smear stained with MGG and cresyl blue showed specific signs of G6PD-deficient red blood cells and Heinz bodies in all patients. Biochemical analysis and molecular typing confirmed G6PD deficiency. The presence of G6PD-deficient red blood cells in the blood smear guides the diagnosis of G6PD deficiency. The diagnosis is biochemical and is based on the combined measurement of G6PD plus pyruvate kinase and/or hexokinase.

Burden of COVID-19 in a Hemodialysis Center in Sub-Saharan Africa

Background: The current COVID-19 pandemic remains a great challenge to healthcare workers, especially caregivers of patients with chronic diseases. Despite the advances in knowledge on COVID-19, data on COVID-19 in haemodialysis (HD) remains rare in Africa. methods: We conducted a review of records from 2020 May 13th to 2021 June 24th in the HD center of Yaoundé General Hospital. All staff and patients in the HD unit were included. Sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, and radiological data and patient outcome data were collected. All statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 21.0 software (Chicago, IL). Results: In all 30 HD patients and 3 staff members were positive for COVID-19 during the period. The median age of the infected population was 56 years (37.25 - 62). The median dialysis vintage was 42 months (24 - 96). Hypertension (73.3%) and diabetes (36.6%) were frequent comorbidities. About 10% (n = 3) were asymptomatic whereas those who were symptomatic had a mean duration of symptoms of 7 ± 5.6 days. Fatigue (23/30), fever (21/30), cough (14/30) and diarrhoea (11/30) were the main symptoms. Oxygen saturation was low in 36.6% (n = 11) ranging from 82% - 89%. About 50% were admitted in hospital for social isolation;there was no admission in intensive care unit. Three patients (10%) died: 2 for respiratory distress and 1 for severe anaemia. Laboratory test was done in 60% (n = 18) of case and revealed in 72.2% (n = 13) patients low lymphocytes count (median 896/mm3 [800 - 1513]) and anaemia in 77.7% (median 8.5 g/dl [7.5 - 9.8]). Conclusions: HD patients are highly susceptible and HD centres are high risk areas during the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
