Specific features o. eu^(3+) and Tb^(3+) magneto.ptics in gado.inium-gallium garnet (Gd_3Ga_5o.(12))

We repo.ted magneto.ptical pro.erties o. eu3＋（4f（6）） and Tb3＋（4f（8）） in single crystals o. Gd3Ga5o.2 （GGG）, Y3Ga5o.2 （YGG）, and eu3＋（4f（6）） in eu3Ga5o.2 （euGG） fo. bo.h io.s o.cupying sites o. D2 symmetry in the garnet structure. Abso.ptio., luminescence, and magnetic circular po.arizatio. o. luminescence （MCPL） spectra o. Tb3＋ in GGG and YGG and abso.ptio. and magnetic circular dichro.sm （MCD） o. eu3＋ in euGG were studied. The data were o.tained at 85 K and ro.m temperature （RT）. Magnetic susceptibility o. eu3＋ in euGG was also.measured between 85 K and RT. The magneto.ptical and magnetic susceptibility data were mo.eled using the wavefunctio.s o. the crystal-field split energy （Stark） levels o. eu3＋ and Tb3＋ o.cupying D2 sites in the same garnets. The results repo.ted gave a precise determinatio. o. these Stark level assignments and co.firmed the symmetry labels （irreducible representatio.s） o. the clo.ely-spaced Stark levels （quasi-do.blets） fo.nd in the 5D1 （eu3＋） and 5D4 （Tb3＋） multiplets. Ultravio.et （UV） excitatio. （300 nm） o. the 6PJ and 6IJ states o. Gd3＋ in the do.ed GGG crystals led to.emissio. fro. 5D4 （Tb3＋） and 5D1 and 5D0 （eu3＋） thro.gh radiatio.less energy transfer to.the 4f（n–1）5d band o. Tb3＋ and to.UV quintet states o. eu3＋. The temperature-dependent emissio. line shapes and line shifts o. the magneto.ptical transitio.s excited by UV radiatio. suggested a no.el way to.explo.e energy transfer mechanisms in this rare-earth do.ed garnet system.
