Chronic gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life in the Korean population

AIM： To evaluate the prevalence of chronic gastroin- testinal symptoms and their impact on health-related quality of life （HRQOL） in the Korean population. METHODS： A cross-sectional survey, using a reliable and valid Rome I] based questionnaire, was per- formed on randomly selected residents, between 18 and 69 years in age. All respondents were interviewed at their homes or offices by a team of interviewers. The impact of chronic gastrointestinal symptoms on HRQOL was assessed using the Korean version of the 36-item Short-Form general health survey （SF-36）. RESULTS： Of the 1807 eligible subjects, 1417 （78.4%： male 762; female 655） were surveyed. Out of the respondents, 18.6% exhibited at least one chronic gastrointestinal symptom. The prevalence of gastro- esophageal reflux disease （GERD）, defined as heart- burn and/or acid regurgitation experienced at least weekly, was 3.5% （95% CI, 2.6-4.5）. The prevalence of uninvestigated dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome （IBS） and chronic constipation based on Rome Ⅱ criteria were 11.7% （95% CI, 10.1-13.5）, 2.2% （95% CI, 1.5-3.1）, and 2.6% （95% CI, 1.8-3.5） respectively. Compared with subjects without chronic gastrointesti- nal symptoms （n = 1153）, those with GERD （n = 50）, uninvestigated dyspepsia （n = 166） and IBS （n = 31） had significantly worse scores on most domains of the SF-36 scales. CONCLUSION： The prevalence of GERD, uninvesti- gated dyspepsia and IBS were 3.5%, 11.7% and 2.2% respectively, in the Korean population. The health- related quality of life was significantly impaired in subjects with GERD, uninvestigated dyspepsia and IBS in this community.

Usefulness of colonic tattooing using indocyanine green in patients with colorectal tumors

AIM To prove that tattooing using indocyanine green(ICG) is feasible in laparoscopic surgery for a colon *** From January 2012 to December 2016, all patients who underwent laparoscopic colonic surgery were retrospectively screened, and 1010 patients with colorectal neoplasms were included. Their lesions were tattooed with ICG the day before the operation. The tattooed group(TG) included 114 patients, and the non-tattooed group(NTG) was selected by propensity score matching of subjects based on age, sex, tumor staging, and operation method(n = 228). In total, 342 patients were enrolled. Between the groups, the changes in [Delta(Δ), preoperative-postoperative] the hemoglobin and albumin levels, operation time, hospital stay, oral ingestion period, transfusion, and perioperative complications were compared. RESULTS Preoperative TG had a shorter operation time(174.76 ± 51.6 min vs 192.63 ± 59.9 min, P < 0.01), hospital stay(9.55 ± 3.36 d vs 11.42 ± 8.23 d, P < 0.01), and postoperative oral ingestion period(1.58 ± 0.96 d vs 2.81 ± 1.90 d, P < 0.01). The Δ hemoglobin(0.78 ± 0.76 g/dL vs 2.2 ± 1.18 g/dL, P < 0.01) and Δ albumin(0.41 ± 0.44 g/dL vs 1.08 ± 0.39 g/dL, P < 0.01) levels were lower in the TG. On comparison of patients in the "N0" and "N1 or N2" groups, the N0 colon cancer group had a better operation time, length of hospital stay, oral ingestion period, Δ hemoglobin, and Δ albumin results than those of the N1 or N2 group. The operation methods affected the results, and laparoscopic anterior resection(LAR) showed similar results. However, for left and right hemicolectomy, both groups showed no difference in operation time or hospital *** Preoperative tattooing with ICG is useful for laparoscopic colectomy, especially in the N0 colon cancer group and LAR.

BACKGROUND Drug-induced liver injury(DILI)is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United *** is mainly caused by painkillers and fever reducers,and it is often characterized by the type of hepatic injury(hepatocellular or cholestatic).This report presents a case of fenofibrate-induced severe jaundice in a 65-year-old Korean male with no prior history of liver *** offer a strategy for patients who present signs of severe liver injury with jaundice and high elevations in serum *** SUMMARY A 65-year-old male visited the gastroenterology outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital due to increased levels of liver enzyme and total bilirubin which were incidentally detected through a preoperative screening *** ultrasound and computed tomography showed no biliary obstruction or nonspecific findings in the *** biopsy was performed and the patient was finally diagnosed with acute cholestatic *** the biopsy,steroid therapy was initiated and after 3 wk of treatment,the total bilirubin level was reduced to 7.22 mg/*** In patients with hyperlipidemia,treatment including fenofibric acid induces rare complications such as severe jaundice and acute cholestatic hepatitis,warranting clinical attention.

With the development of stable alkali metal anodes,V_(2)O_(5) is gaining traction as a cathode material due to its high theoretical capacity and the ability to intercalate Li,Na and K ***,we report a method for synthesizing structured orthorhombic V_(2)O_(5) microspheres and investigate Li intercalation/deintercalation into this *** industry adoption,the electrochemical behavior of V_(2)O_(5) as well as structural and phase transformation attributing to Li intercalation reaction must be further *** synthesized V_(2)O_(5) microspheres consisted of small primary particles that were strongly joined together and exhibited good cycle stability and rate capability,triggered by reversible volume change and rapid Li ion *** addition,the reversibility of phase transformation(a,e,d,c and xLixV_(2)O_(5))and valence state evolution(5+,4+,and 3.5+)during intercalation/de-intercalation were studied via in-situ X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray absorption near edge structure analyses.

Influence of Processing Parameters on the Mechanical Properties of a Plasma Radical Nitrided SCM440 Steel

Plasma radical nitriding was performed to harden the surface of SCM440 steel for 1-10 h at temperature range of 450-550℃. This process involved the use of NH3 gas instead of N2 gas employed for the well-established plasma nitriding method. No compound layer was formed during this process except the experiment carried out at 500℃ for 10 h. The main phase produced in the diffusion zone was identified to be γ＇-Fe4（N, C）. A diffusion depth increased with increasing treatment temperature and time （up to about 250 μm）. The surface hardness of radical nitrided layer was about two times higher than that of the untreated surface. The tensile test was carried out to estimate the mechanical properties of surface-hardened SCM440 steel prepared at various plasma radical nitriding treatment time and temperature. The influence of radical nitriding treatment on the tensile strength of the specimen was found to be insignificant. The highest value of the ultimate tensile strength was obtained in the experiment carried out at 500℃ for 1 h. However, the elongation was greatly affected by the radical nitriding processing parameters. The maximum value of elongation, which is equal to about 18.1%, was also obtained under the condition of 500℃ for 1 h.

Estimation of genetic parameters on growth characteristics of a 35-year-old Pinus koraiensis progeny trial in South Korea

The effects of genetic and environmental factors on Pinus koraiensis growth were studied based on a35 year-old progeny trial composed of open-pollinated offspring of twenty-one plus ***,DBH and volume of the offspring was analyzed using restricted maximum likelihood/best linear unbiased prediction in mixed model *** site and family effects on the three traits were *** distinct growth of offspring by site with disparate climates corroborated the importance of planting species in suitable *** differences by family was significant,emphasizing the importance of identifying families with either superior or inferior *** parental ranking was assigned in the sites,inferring the breeding value of each plus *** estimates of individual heritability(h_(i)^(2))of height,DBH and volume growth were 0.169-0.645,0.108-0.331 and 0.129-0.343 respectively,with higher h_(i)^(2) of the height than DBH on each *** of variance of genetic effect was higher with DBH in some cases,indicating the scope for selection is larger for this trait despite the lower heritability compared to *** the variation between families in terms of the performance stability across sites,consideration of the genotype by environment interaction is required in selecting materials to be used in reforestation with Korean pine.A few families with either superior or inferior performance retained their parental ranking for at least a *** families with increased growth on a particular site were identified,indicating their high breeding value and low *** in the genetic performance of the families by site requires delineation of the breeding region of the species.

Mechanical and electrochemical characteristics evaluation in annealing treatment for ship material

The effect of heat treatment on the electrochemical and mechanical properties of SS400 steel was investigated, and the effects of annealing conditions on notched specimens subjected to the slow strain rate test (SSRT) were studied. The results show that no correlations are observed among the maximum tensile strength, yield strength, and stress corrosion cracking. In contrast, the elongation and time-to-fracture are improved with stress-relieving annealing compared with the as-received condition. The elongation, time-to-fracture, and number of dimples increase with annealing heat treatment.

Does the bile duct angulation affect recurrence of choledocholithiasis?

AIM:To investigate whether bile duct angulation and T-tube choledochostomy influence the recurrence of ***:We conducted a retrospective study including 259 patients who underwent endoscopic sphincterotomy and cholecystectomy for choledocholithiasis between 2000 and *** imaginary line was drawn along the center of the bile duct and each internal angle was measured at the two angulation sites ofthe bile duct *** values of both angles were added *** then tested our hypothesis by examining whether T-tube choledochostomy was performed and stone recurrence occurred by reviewing each subject's medical ***:The overall recurrence rate was 9.3% (24 of 259 patients).The mean value of sums of angles in the recurrence group was 268.3°± 29.6°,while that in the non-recurrence group was 314.8°± 19.9° (P < 0.05).Recurrence rate of the T-tube group was 15.9% (17 of 107),while that of the non T-tube group was 4.6% (7 of 152) (P < 0.05).Mean value of sums of angles after T-tube drainage was 262.5°± 24.6° and that before T-tube drainage was 298.0°± 23.9° in 22 patients (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:The bile duct angulation and T-tube choledochostomy may be risk factors of recurrence of bile duct stones.

Lithium–sulfur batteries(LSBs)are regarded as promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage devices owing to their high-theoretical capacity(1675 mAh g^(−1))and affordable ***,several limitations of LSBs such as the lithium polysulfide shuttle,large volume expansion,and low electrical conductivity of sulfur need to be resolved for practical *** address these limitations,herein,a multidimensional architectured hybrid(Co@CNT/nG),where Co_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles are encapsulated into threedimensional(3D)porous N-doped reduced graphene oxide interconnected with carbon nanotube(CNT)branches,is synthesized through a simple pyrolysis *** synergistic effect achieved through the homogeneously distributed and encapsulated Co_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles,the interconnected CNT branches,and the 3D hierarchical porous structure and N-doping of Co@CNT/nG significantly suppresses the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and enhances the conversion redox kinetics for the improved sulfur *** validate this effect through various measurements including symmetric cells,Li_(2)S nucleation,shuttle currents,Tafel slopes,diffusion coefficients,and post-mortem ***,Co@CNT/nG-70S-based LSB cells achieve a high-specific capacity of 1193.1 mAh g^(−1) at 0.1 C and a low capacity decay rate of 0.030%per cycle for 700 cycles at 5 C,delivering a high areal capacity of 5.62 mAh cm^(−2) even with a loading of 6.5 mg cm^(−2).

Techniques for overcoming atretic changes of the portal vein in living donor liver transplantation

Background:Spontaneous diversion of the portal flow through collateral vessels into the systemic circulation is frequently observed in liver transplant recipients with severe portal *** induces main portal vein atretic change and modifies flow into the collateral even after donor graft *** atretic changes make liver transplantation *** this article we described several methods for overcoming this challenge by appropriate surgical ***:Three anastomotic techniques for living donor liver transplantation were performed in patients with atretic changes in the portal ***:The three techniques were(1)venoplasty to widen the diameter by using the recipient’s portal vein,and the diameter of the recipient’s portal vein was enlarged using their own portal vein stump patch;(2)conduit with cryopreserved vessels,and we dissected around the superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein junction and a conduit was built using the cryopreserved vessels;and(3)left gastric varix to portal vein anastomosis,if the recipients had large gastric varix and variceal wall was sufficiently thick for ***:Selection of optimal methods for portal vein anastomosis is essential in patients with atrophic change on the portal *** these methods are used aptly,they can be considered as favorable methods for overcoming each situation.
