G. C. Ying, Y. Y. Meng, B. E. Sagan, and V. R. Vatter [1] found the maximum number of maximal independent sets in connected graphs which contain at most two cycles. In this paper, we give an alternative proof to determine the largest number of maximal independent sets among all connected graphs of order n ≥ 12, which contain at most two cycles. We also characterize the extremal graph achieving this maximum value.

A maximal independent set is an independent set that is not a proper subset of any other independent set. A connected graph (respectively, graph) G with vertex set V(G) is called a quasi-tree graph (respectively, quasi-forest graph), if there exists a vertex x ∈V(G) such that G −x?is a tree (respectively, forest). In this paper, we survey on the large numbers of maximal independent sets among all trees, forests, quasi-trees and quasi-forests. In addition, we further look into the problem of determining the third largest number of maximal independent sets among all quasi-trees and quasi-forests. Extremal graphs achieving these values are also given.

The independence number of a graph G is the maximum cardinality among all independent sets of G. For any tree T of order n ≥ 2, it is easy to see that . In addition, if there are duplicated leaves in a tree, then these duplicated leaves are all lying in every maximum independent set. In this paper, we will show that if T is a tree of order n ≥ 4 without duplicated leaves, then . Moreover, we constructively characterize the extremal trees T of order n ≥ 4, which are without duplicated leaves, achieving these upper bounds.

A Constructive Characterization of Trees with the Same Distance-3 Domination Number

A maximal independent set is an independent set that is not a proper subset of any other independent set. Given a graph G of order n, we define the P-extended of G, denoted G(m), as the graph consisting of G together with n copies of P, a leaf of each path attached to exactly one vertex of G. In this paper, we determine the number of maximal independent sets of the P-extended of a star and a path.

This study aimed to examine the association between the use of H1-antihistamines(AHs)and head and neck cancer(HNC)risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Data from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan were analyzed for the period from 2008 to 2018.A propensity-score-matched cohort of 54,384 patients each in the AH user and nonuser groups was created and analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards *** results showed that the risk of HNC was significantly lower in AH users(adjusted hazard ratio:0.55,95%CI:0.48 to 0.64)and the incidence rate was also lower(5.16 vs.8.10 per 100,000 person-years).The lower HNC incidence rate in AH users(95%CI:0.63;0.55 to 0.73)suggests that AH use may reduce the risk of HNC in T2DM patients.

Silicon (Si) is regarded as a promising material for lithium-ion battery anode because of high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, Si faces particle pulverization and rapid capacity fading due to serious volume change during the lithiation and the delithiation process. In this work, a silicon/carbon composite constituted to Si powder and carbon nanofiber (CNF) is produced to solve the above issues as a new design structure of anode material. The Si powder was recycled from the silicon slicing waste in photovoltaic industry and the CNF was from dry rice straws. By mixing the purified Si powder with CNF, the composite was synthesized by the freeze-drying method and calcination. In the cyclic test, Si adding with 1 wt% CNF showed 3091 mAh/g capacity in the first cycle and 1079 mAh/g capacity after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.5 A/g, which were both better than pristine Si. SEM images also show the composite structure can eliminate cracks on the surface of the electrode during cycling. CNF attaching on Si particles can increase specific surface area, so binder can easily combine the active materials and the conductive materials together. This strategy enhances the structure stability and prevents the electrode from delamination.
