Dental microwear textures have proven to be a valuable tool for reconstructing the diets of a wide assortment of fossil ***,some studies have recently questioned the efficacy of this approach,suggesting that aspects of habitat unrelated to food preference,especially environmental grit load,might have a confounding effect on microwear patterning that obscures the diet *** we evaluate this hypothesis by examining microwear textures of 3 extant sympatric rodent species that vary in diet breadth and are found in a variety of habitat types:Mastomys coucha,Micaelamys namaquensis and Rhabdomys *** sample each of these species from 3 distinct environmental settings in southern Africa that differ in rainfall and vegetative cover:Nama-Karoo shrublands(semi-desert)and Dry Highveld grasslands in the Free state Province of south Africa,and Afromontane(wet)grasslands in the highlands of *** differences between habitat types are evident for some of the species,inconsistency in the pattern suggests that the microwear signal is driven by variation in foods eaten rather than grit-level per *** is clear that,at least for species and habitats sampled in the current study,environmental grit load does not swamp diet-related microwear signatures.

Whey proteins provide an excellent source of low-molecular-weight bioactive peptides with important functional properties and bioactivities like antihypertensive,opioid,and antimicrobial *** of peptide molecules with lower molecular weight has a great role in food for health *** this investigation,the release of low-molecular-weight peptides from whey protein concentrate was attempted by using enzymatic *** hydrolyzate was then incorporated into milk to obtain enriched milk(EM)with low-molecular-weight *** on sensory analysis of EM,electrophoretic and RP-HPLC studies,hydrolyzates of 10%protein(degree of hydrolysis 5%;enzyme/substrate E/s,1:50)were finally incorporated into milk at 20%(v/v)to develop an acceptable product enriched with low-molecular-weight *** had higher protein content,viscosity and emulsifying properties than control milk with 3%*** is recommended that EM should not be sterilized as it results in coagulation,but can be safely pasteurized and spray dried without any undesirable *** ACE-inhibition activity was obtained in hydrolyzate,followed by *** study is expected to boost the opportunity for the dairy industry to venture further into the nutraceutical dairy market.

Prince George’s County,Maryland,in the Washington *** area has developed a best management practice decision support system(BMPDss)to support analysis and decision making for stormwater management planning and design at both the site scale and the watershed *** paper presents a detailed description of the BMPDss.A case study that demonstrates the application of the system is also *** case study involves a Green Highway project located in a highly urbanized area within the Anacostia River watershed of the *** best management practices(BMP)such as bioretention,filter vegetative swale,porous paving,and landscape infiltration are proposed for reducing highway runoff and improving water *** BMPDss is used to identify and evaluate various alternatives to determine the most costeffective types and combinations of BMPs that minimize the highway runoff pollution.

We demonstrate herein that hemin-graphene hybrid nanosheets(H-GNs)can differentiate hemin-binding DNA aptamers(i.e.,guanine-rich DNA sequences that form G-quadruplex structures upon binding hemin)and nonspecific single-stranded oligonucleotides *** exploiting the tendency of the H-GNs to aggregate under high ionic strength and their inherent catalytic activities,excess H-GNs were removed and the amount of H-GNs remaining in the supernatant was ***,the binding affinity of hemin-binding DNA aptamers to the H-GNs was determined upon titration with the *** the conformity of the experimental data to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm,hemin is hypothesized to be sandwiched between the G-quadruplex DNA and graphene forming a ternary complex as a result of the specific bind-ing of the aptamer with the *** binding affinity of the aptamer is not as strong as that of hemin/G-quadruplex in solution,which is attributed to electronic effects imparted by the graphene *** catalytic activity of the resulting complex,however,was confirmed to be higher than that of H-GNs alone.

Chinese Strategic Culture: A Wei Qi Analysis

If the 21st Century is set to be the 'Asian Century', understanding China's rise is essential to mapping out what will replace the Us' unipolar moment in international relations. Although several scholars and policy makers have attempted to answer this question, most have done so from a biased point of view which fails to capture the pervasive influence of China's historical norms on its strategic culture. As such, this thesis uses the ancient game of Wei Qi to analyse China's foreign policy practices by aiming to understand how China's gaming strategies influence its foreign *** use of Wei Qi as an independent variable is tested by analysing the foreign policy practices of three distinct phases of recent Chinese history including:the Qing Dynasty;Mao's reign;and the present. As such, this thesis gives a wide overview of a range of case studies including the Opium Wars, Korean War, sino-Us rapprochement, China's maritime strategy, UN peacekeeping operations and influence on developing countries, PLA reforms and the use of cyber warfare. The last chapter brings the various case studies and Wei Qi strategy together by creating a framework for China's future foreign policy moves using three key observations:as China has gained power, it has sought to extend its foreign policy reach to more distant areas of the world;China reacts 'intensely' to issues it considers key to its national security-even if the issues are essentially contested in nature;and through its international exposure, China has become both a norm maker and a norm *** thesis finds that China's foreign policy, much like Wei Qi, is based on an anti-encirclement strategy. As such, it is argued that China's foreign policy reactions are essentially based on other moves by foreign powers in the region. This does not predispose China to a fixed aggressive or passive stance in its foreign policy. Rather, the measures China adopts are dependent on the situational context it faces implying a highly

This work proposes a soft sensor based on a phenomenological model for online estimation of the density and viscosity of a slurry flowing through a pipe-and-fittings assembly(PFA). The model is developed considering the conservation principle applied to mass and momentum transfer and considering frictional energy losses to include the variables directly affecting slurry properties. A reported proposal for state observers with unknown inputs is used to develop the first block of the observer structure. The second block is constructed with two options for evaluating slurry viscosity, generating two possible estimator structures, which are tested using real data. A comparison between them indicates different uses and capabilities according to available process information.
