Dental microwear of sympatric rodent species sampled across habitats in southern Africa: Implications for environmental influence

Dental microwear textures have proven to be a valuable tool for reconstructing the diets of a wide assortment of fossil ***,some studies have recently questioned the efficacy of this approach,suggesting that aspects of habitat unrelated to food preference,especially environmental grit load,might have a confounding effect on microwear patterning that obscures the diet *** we evaluate this hypothesis by examining microwear textures of 3 extant sympatric rodent species that vary in diet breadth and are found in a variety of habitat types:Mastomys coucha,Micaelamys namaquensis and Rhabdomys *** sample each of these species from 3 distinct environmental settings in southern Africa that differ in rainfall and vegetative cover:Nama-Karoo shrublands(semi-desert)and Dry Highveld grasslands in the Free state Province of south Africa,and Afromontane(wet)grasslands in the highlands of *** differences between habitat types are evident for some of the species,inconsistency in the pattern suggests that the microwear signal is driven by variation in foods eaten rather than grit-level per *** is clear that,at least for species and habitats sampled in the current study,environmental grit load does not swamp diet-related microwear signatures.

Whey proteins provide an excellent source of low-molecular-weight bioactive peptides with important functional properties and bioactivities like antihypertensive,opioid,and antimicrobial *** of peptide molecules with lower molecular weight has a great role in food for health *** this investigation,the release of low-molecular-weight peptides from whey protein concentrate was attempted by using enzymatic *** hydrolyzate was then incorporated into milk to obtain enriched milk(EM)with low-molecular-weight *** on sensory analysis of EM,electrophoretic and RP-HPLC studies,hydrolyzates of 10%protein(degree of hydrolysis 5%;enzyme/substrate E/s,1:50)were finally incorporated into milk at 20%(v/v)to develop an acceptable product enriched with low-molecular-weight *** had higher protein content,viscosity and emulsifying properties than control milk with 3%*** is recommended that EM should not be sterilized as it results in coagulation,but can be safely pasteurized and spray dried without any undesirable *** ACE-inhibition activity was obtained in hydrolyzate,followed by *** study is expected to boost the opportunity for the dairy industry to venture further into the nutraceutical dairy market.

soluble and insoluble/bound phenolic compounds and an aqueous infusion of two mint species(Medina and Hasawi),were tested for their total phenolic content,2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate(ABTs)and 1,1-diphenyl-2picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)radical scavenging activity,iron(Ⅲ)reduction,iron(Ⅱ)chelating and oxygen radical absorbance capacity(ORAC).Furthermore,the potency of the mint extracts in the inhibition of radical-induced DNA scission,human low-density lipoprotein(LDL)cholesterol oxidation,formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARs)in a cooked ground meat system and LPs(lipopolysaccharide)-stimulated cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)expression in J774A.1 mouse macrophage cells were *** showed that the soluble phenolics had a higher phenolic content and antioxidant activity than the insoluble-bound extracts and aqueous infusions in most of the *** varieties exhibited notable antioxidant activities and inhibition of LDL cholesterol oxidation,DNA scission and COX-2 gene expression at transcriptional ***,Medina mint was a more potent antioxidant than the Hasawi *** performance liquid chromatography with online tandem electrospray ionization mass spectrometry(HPLC/EsI-Ms/Ms)analysis of the extracts revealed that rosmarinic acid was the major phenolic compound present in both mint samples.

Many chemicals are released into the environment, and chemical contamination has been suggested as a contributing factor to amphibian declines. To add to a growing body of knowledge about the impact of individual chemicals on non-target organisms, we examined the specificity of deformities induced by exposure to four pesticides （atrazine, 2,4-dichloropheoxyacetic acid （2,4-D）, triadimefon, and glyphosate） in the model amphibian species, Xenopus laevis. We focused on the period of organ morphogenesis, as it is frequently found to be particularly sensitive to chemical exposure yet also commonly overlooked. We found similar levels of intestine malformations and edemas, as well as disruption of skeletal muscle, in atrazine and triadimefon exposed tadpoles. The effects of 2,4-D were only apparent at the highest concentrations we examined; glyphosate did not induce dramatic malformations at the concentrations tested. While researchers have shown that it is important to understand how chemical mixtures affect non-target organisms, our results suggest that it is first crucial to determine how these chemicals act independently in order to be able to identify consequences of individual pesticide exposure.

The accurate description of friction is critical in the finite element(FE)simulation of the sheet metal forming ***,friction is oversimplified through the use of a constant Coulomb friction *** this study,the application of an existing multiscale friction model is extended to the hot stamping *** model accounts for the effects of tool and sheet metal surface topography as well as the evolution of contact pressure,temperature,and bulk strain during hot *** load flattening and strip drawing experiments are performed to calibrate the *** results show that the model can relatively well predict friction in strip draw experiments when the tool surface evolution due to wear is ***,the application of the formulated multiscale friction model was demonstrated in the FE simulation of a hot-stamped part.
