Laboratory assessment of Alaska aggregates using Micro-Deval test

Aggregates suitable for use in asphalt concrete （AC） pavement construction must meet durability criteria. Thus, it is critical to select appropriate tests to properly characterize aggregate durability. In Alaska, durability tests currently being used for aggregates in AC pavement include Los Angeles （LA） abrasion test, sulfate soundness test and Washington degradation test. However, there have long been concerns arising over Washington degradation test used as an acceptance tool, motivating pavement practitioners to seek more suitable alternatives. This paper presents a study to investigate the feasibility of using Micro-Deval test, commonly used in other states, to evaluate the durability of Alaskan aggregates in AC pavement as well as its potential to replace Washington degradation test. Micro-Deval test, Washington degradation test and other tests currently specified in Alaska were conducted on aggregates from 16 batches representing statewide sources. Based on the testing results, it is found that using Micro-Deval test for durability assessment of Alaska aggregates was feasible and reproducible, and a high potential was revealed to use Micro-Deval test to replace Washington degradation test in Alaska. It is recommended that Micro-Deval test be considered as an additional test for a certain period, but in the long run should be used along with current LA abrasion and sulfate soundness tests to provide a more desirable durability assessment of Alaska aggregates used in AC pavement.

A filtering-based bridge weigh-in-motion system on a continuous multi-girder bridge considering the influence lines of different lanes

A real-time vehicle monitoring is crucial for effective bridge maintenance and traffic management because overloaded vehicles can cause damage to bridges,and in some extreme cases,it will directly lead to a bridge *** weigh-in-motion(BWIM)system as a high performance and cost-effective technology has been extensively used to monitor vehicle speed and weight on ***,the dynamic effect and data noise may have an adverse impact on the bridge responses during and immediately following the vehicles pass the *** fast Fourier transform(FFT)method,which can significantly purify the collected structural responses(dynamic strains)received from sensors or transducers,was used in axle counting,detection,and axle weighing technology in this *** further improve the accuracy of the BWIM system,the field-calibrated influence lines(ILs)of a continuous multi-girder bridge were regarded as a reference to identify the vehicle weight based on the modified Moses algorithm and the least squares *** situ experimental results indicated that the signals treated with FFT filter were far better than the original ones,the efficiency and the accuracy of axle detection were significantly improved by introducing the FFT method to the BWIM ***,the lateral load distribution effect on bridges should be considered by using the calculated average ILs of the specific lane individually for vehicle weight calculation of this lane.

Using the TEOST^(■) MHT-4 to Identify Robust Antioxidant Systems for Modern Engine Oils

A research tool has been developed that utilizes the Thermo-Oxidation Engine Oil Simulation Test (TEOST) MHT-4 to collect information on engine oil oxidation and deposit formation. The technique capitalizes on the traditional TEOST features as a deposit formation test, but also generates additional oxidation information by monitoring peak increase in the carbonyl region of the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrum (FT-IR) of TEOST used oils and volatiles. The data on overall oxidation and deposit formation is used to generate a "robustness" model for modern engine oil degradation. The tool is used to study low phosphorus Group Ⅱ passenger car engine oils formulated with different types of antioxidants and a molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC). The model shows that improved oxidation and deposit control can be achieved by formulating with the molybdenum compound, and that the most effective stabilization system is composed of the organo-molybdenum compound,an alkylated diphenylamine (NDPA), and the hindered phenolic antioxidant 4,4′-methylenebis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) (MBDTBP).

Background:In the past decades,birdwatching as a hobby developed rapidly and produced ample scientific records that have aided conservation ***,it is increasingly attractive to promote avian research by providing data from ***:We compared records from 16 years of community birdwatching and a 1-year formalized bird monitoring in Suzhou,China to study the similarities and differences between the two monitoring ***:We showed that within the 325 bird species recorded by the two methods,an annual average of 108 species were documented by community science and 223 bird species were recorded by 1-year formalized *** by the number of bird species recorded per survey trip,the bird monitoring activity of community birdwatchers was significantly ***,the monitoring intensity of community birdwatching measured as the average survey trips per site each survey year was also lower than that of formalized bird *** addition,community birdwatchers preferred urban landscapes to rural ***:Community birdwatching could record the majority of local birds and complements the professional surveys in avian *** designed and coordinated community science can be used to expand the knowledge about avian distribution and population *** findings are critical for the development of conservation science with regard to community involvement.

Reversal of maternal obesity attenuates hypoxia and improves placental development in the preeclamptic-like BPH/5 mouse model
