A pilot prospective prevalence study of chronic rhinosinusitis associated with inflammatory bowel disease

Background:Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal ***-intestinal manifestations such as pulmonary diseases have been *** rhinosinusitis(CRS),an inflammatory condition of the sinonasal mucosa,has been associated with several lung *** the relationship between lung and intestinal pathologies,and lung and sinus pathologies,we aimed to determine the prevalence of IBD among CRS ***:Pilot prevalence ***-two CRS patients were screened for IBD symptoms from October 2018 to January ***-reported disease symptoms and overall quality of life were evaluated using the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test 22(SNOT-22),Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire(SIBDQ),and EuroQol 5 Dimension 5 level(EQ-5D-5l)*** Modified lund-Kennedy(MlK)endoscopic and lund-Mackay(lM)grading systems were used to confirm CRS *** who reported subjective symptoms of IBD were referred to a gastroenterologist clinic for further ***:Twenty of the 92(20.2%,95%CI:12.6%-29.8%)CRS patients reported symptoms of IBD and four individuals(4.26%,95%CI:1.17%-10.50%)were sub-sequently diagnosed with *** to patients without IBD symptoms(n=72),those with symptoms(n=20)reported significantly worse SNOT-22(P=0.002),SIBDQ(Pl(P=0.0063)***,these patients did not exhibit significantly different MlK(P=0.81)or lM(P=0.04)***:The prevalence of IBD may be elevated among individuals with CRS relative to the general Canadian *** pilot study suggests that CRS with IBD is associated with lower quality of *** cross-sectional studies with larger sample sizes are required.

Inhibition of macrophage-mediated phagocytosis has emerged as an essential mechanism for tumor immune evasion. One mechanism inhibiting the innate response is the presence of the macrophage inhibitory molecule, signal regulatory protein-a （SIRPa）, on tumor-associated macrophages （TAMs） and its cognate ligand cluster of differentiation 47 （CD47） on tumor cells in the tumor microenvironment. On the basis of a recently discovered programmed death protein 1 （PD-1） in TAMs, we discuss the potential inhibitory receptors that possess new functions beyond T cell exhaustion in this review. As more and more immune receptors are found to be expressed on TAMs, the corresponding therapies may also stimulate macrophages for phagocytosis and thereby provide extra anti-tumor benefits in cancer therapy. Therefore, identification of biomarkers and combinatorial therapeutic strategies, have the potential to improve the efficacy and safety profiles of current immunotherapies.

Background: Selective serotonergic reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs) are first-line pharmacologic treatments for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD), but must be given over extended period of time before the onset of action. The use of SSRIs in PTSD patients with mild traumatic brain injury(m TBI) is problematic since SSRIs could exacerbate post-concussion syndrome(PCS) symptoms. VA/DOD guidelines identify trauma-focused psychotherapy as the best evidence-based treatment for PTSD, but overall effectiveness is limited by reduced levels of patient engagement and retention. A previous study from this research group suggested that quetiapine monotherapy, but not risperidone or valproate, could increase engagement in trauma-focused ***: We report the study protocol of a pilot study funded under the South-Central Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center pilot study program from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This randomized, open-label study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of completing a randomized trial of quetiapine vs. treatment as usual to promote patient engagement in PTSD patients with a history of m ***: We expect that the success of this ongoing study should provide us with the preliminary data necessary to design a full-scale randomized trial. Positive efficacy results in a full-scale trial should inform new VA guidelines for clinical practice by showing that quetiapine-related improvements in patient engagement and retention may be the most effective approach to assure that VA resources achieve the best possible outcome for *** registration: NCT04280965.

Entrainment of *** and listeria monocytogenes from sediment in irrigation canal

E. coli and listeria monocytogenes(or l. monocytogenes) are bacteria affecting fresh produce that is harmful for health of humans and animals. If these bacteria are present in surface waterbody(e.g.,irrigation canals), they will impair irrigation water quality and threaten produce safety. This paper studied the resuspension of E. coli and listeria from bed sediment into irrigation water through several sets of laboratory experiments in an open channel flume. We studied three types of sediments using several flow rates in different velocities and shear stress. Bacteria’s concentration in water increases with the bed shear stress. Two empirical relations were derived to correlate the concentration of E. coli and l. monocytogenes with the dimensionless bed shear stress. The experimental data favorably verified the relationships for sandy loam, loamy sand, and loam. The results showed that both bacteria could entrain from sand more efficiently compared to other sediments(i.e., sandy loam or loam). These relationships can be applied to water quality models for simulating E. coli and l. monocytogenes transport in irrigation canals for better managing irrigation water quality.

Diet quality in patients with stroke

Town-scale microbial sewer community and H2S emissions response to common chemical and biological dosing treatments

Controlling hydrogen sulfide(H2S)odors and emissions using a single,effective treatment across a town-scale sewer network is a challenge faced by many water *** of a sewer diversion provided the opportunity to compare the effectiveness of magnesium hydroxide(Mg(OH)2)and two biological dosing compounds(Bioproducts A and B),with different modes of action(MOA),in a field-test across a large sewer ***(OH)2 increases sewer p H allowing suppression of H2S release into the sewer environment while Bioproduct A acts to disrupt microbial communication through quorum sensing(QS),reducing biofilm *** B reduces H2S odors by scouring the sewer of fats,oils and grease(FOGs),which provide adhesion points for the microbial *** revealed that only Mg(OH)2 altered the microbial community structure and reduced H2S emissions in a live sewer system,whilst Bioproducts A and B did not reduce H2S emissions or have an observable effect on the composition of the microbial community at the dosed *** results recommend in situ testing of dosing treatments before implementation across an operational system.
