background: An opportunity to improve care of multiple chronic conditions for those living in rural areas of the country may exist through the use of technology. Integrating technology interventions into existing rural health systems allows for increased access to healthcare services and augments self-management ability for patients. However, questions remain about acceptability and feasibility of technology use in rural populations. The purpose of this paper is to present the feasibility of mI-SMART, a HIPAA compliant, web-based, structure of mHealth sensors and mobile devices designed to overcome the known health determinant of access to care for rural, chronically ill patients by using technology. Methods: The study was conducted at a primary-care clinic that provided healthcare at no or low cost to low income adults. Inclusion criteria encompassed adults, with at least one chronic condition, having at least 3rd grade reading level, without having dementia/psychosis. Each participant was given a Nexus7 tablet and bluetooth self-monitoring devices. Feasibility was evaluated in four ways and acceptability was evaluated with post-intervention questionnaires. Results: Thirty participants [mean age: 52 years (SD: 10.0, range: 29 - 74)] were majority female (70%), white (70%), married (60%), high-school educated or less (56.7%), impoverished (less than $20,000 per annum (56.7%), with multiple chronic conditions (96.7%)). During the trial, all participants were able to transmit data. No error messages were due to the mI-SMART system. Errors were user related and solved with technical support. Mean number of self-monitor transmissions was 219.7 [(SD: 197.4), range: 1 - 733]. Participants logged into the system an average of 163. 1 [(SD: 169.7), range: 2 - 568] times and viewed an average of 1092.1 [(SD: 1205.6), range: 8 - 3851] intervention components. Over eighty-six percent of participants sent data for 12 weeks and 43.1% used the intervention for longer. Conclusions:

biotic stresses negatively affect canola growth and production. Flea beetle damage and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (S. sclerotiorum) infection are two of the worst biotic stresses for canola. Auxin Repressed Proteins (ARPs) responsive to several abiotic stresses have been reported. However, information about ARPs induced by Flea beetle damage and S. sclerotiorum infection, their roles in biotic stress tolerance are still lacking in canola. ESTs for an Auxin Repressed Protein 1 (bnARP1) were highly represented (expressed) in a brassica napus subtractive library developed after leaf damage by the crucifer flea beetle (Phyllotreta cruciferae). Expression of this gene was under different developmental control in b. napus, and it was co-induced in b. napus by flea beetle feeding, S. sclerotiorum infection, drought and cold. A total of 25 bnARP genes were represented in different b. napus stress and development EST libraries and indicated larger, diversified families than known earlier. Dwarf phenotypes, primary root growth inhibition, lateral root enhancement, reduced sensitivity to 2, 4-D, and reduced PIN1 and LOX expression in transgenic Arabidopsis expression lines suggest that bnARP1 is an auxin repressor that prevents auxin transport and supports an interaction between the auxin and jasmonate signalling pathways. And the increased survival after S. sclerotiorum infection in transgenic over-expression Arabidopsis suggests that bnARP1 could play a role in S. sclerotiorum tolerance through connecting auxin and jasmonate signalling pathways.

Near-nadir observations by the Multispectral Instrument (MSI) onboard the Sentinel-2 and the Operational Land Imager (OLI) onboard Landsat 8 were collected during two Simultaneous Nadir Overpasses (SNO). Multispectral images with 10, 20, and 30 m resolution from a spatially uniform area in the Saharan desert were acquired for direct comparison of MSI and OLI Top- Of-Atmosphere (TOA) reflectances. This paper presents an initial radiometric cross-calibration of the 8 corresponding spectral bands of the Sentinel-2 MSI and Landsat 8 OLI sensors. With the well-calibrated Landsat 8 OLI as a reference, the comparison indicates that 6 MSI bands are consistent with OLI within 3% in terms of spectral band adjustment factors bi . The Near-Infra-Red (NIR) and cirrus bands are exceptions. They yield radiometric differences on the order of 8% and 15% respectively. Cross-calibration results show that the radiometric difference of the 7 corresponding bands are consistent to OLI within 1% or better, except on cirrus band. A pixel-by-pixel match between the MSI and OLI observations for different land covers showed that. This initial study suggests that the red-edge band b8A of MSI can be used to replace the NIR band b08 when conducting vegetation monitoring.

Zeros in Accelerometer Files A Comparison Study of Ten Published Nonwear Algorithms

Despite the increasing use of accelerometers, the handling of zero values in data files remains understudied. Using data from the QUALITY （QUebec Adipose and Lifestyle Investigation in Youth） cohort, output from 10 published nonwear algorithms were compared in 520 children aged 8-10 years who wore an Actigraph accelerometer for 7 days. These algorithms differed by： 1） the minimal duration of consecutive zeros required to be designated as nonwear （10-90 minutes）; 2） the presence and magnitude of an allowance period, and 3） the presence of a specific time frame. Significant differences were obtained between all but two algorithms, including： 1） wear time differences up to 117 minutes per day; 2） differences in counts per minutes as high as 80; and 3） differences in sedentary time up to two hours daily. Estimates of light and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were less affected. This study suggests that the nonwear algorithm used can have a significant effect on estimates of wear duration, overall physical activity level and sedentary time in children. Until technological developments bring to zero nonwear time, specifying the nonwear algorithm used when publishing results is essential to ensure accurate comparison between studies.

Effect of Mercuric Compounds on Pine and Sycamore Germination and Early Survival

Mercury pollution has become an important current issue as a result of its environmental effects on a global scale. The Oak Ridge Reservation, established in 1942, was the designated site for the construction of the atomic bomb. During a 20-year period from 1944-1963 radioactive and toxic chemical pollutants, especially mercury compounds were released into the surrounding waterways.A germination study was conducted to investigate the ability of three tree species, American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis),shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata), and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) seeds to germinate in mercuric nitrate (Hg(NO3)2 and methylmercury chloride (CH3HgCl) solutions. A subsequent greenhouse study was conducted to assess the phytotoxic effects of different mercuric solutions on Platanus occidentalis (American Sycamore), inoculated with soils from East Fork Poplar *** also measured vegetation stress by Near Infrared (NIR) *** wavelengths examined were those thatare specific to chlorophyll and several carotenoids, which are involved in photosynthesis: 430 nm (Chl a), 448 nm (Chl b, carotenoids), 471 nm (carotenoids), 642 nm (Chl b), 662 & 680 nm (Chl a). Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to identify patterns in sycamore leaf spectral *** in vitro conditions, as mercury concentration increased above 100 mg·kg-1, germination of all species decreased, with P. echinata being the least sensitive. Germination was inhibited more when seeds were exposed to methyl mercury chloride than to mercuric nitrate. Organic species of mercury proved to be more toxic than inorganic species of mercury in our greenhouse study. Significant changes occurred in levels of all pigments sampled (p430, p448, p471, p642, p662, and p680) over the course of the experiment. NIR spectroscopy was not sensitive enough to detect other chemical changes to foliage following mercury application.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)are found ubiquitously in wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)due to their multiple sources in industry and consumer *** Australia,limited spatial data are available on PFAS levels inWWTPs influent,while no temporal data have been *** aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and temporal trend of PFAS in the influent of two large WWTPs in Australia(WWTP A and b)over a four-year *** influent samples were collected over one week at different seasons from 2014 to *** perfluoroalkyl acids(PFAA)(*** perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids(PFCAs)and four perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids(PFSA))were detected with mean S11PFAA concentrations of 57±3.3e94±17 ng/L at WWTP A,and 31±6.1e142±73 ng/L at WWTP *** highest mean concentrations were observed for perfluorohexanoate(PFHxA)(20±2 ng/L)in WWTP A,and perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS)(17±13 ng/L)in WWTP *** precursor 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate was detected over five sampling periods from Aug 2016 to Oct 2017,with mean concentrations of 37±18e138±51 ng/L for WWTP A and 8.8±4.5e29±5.1 ng/L for WWTP *** concentration of 6:2 FTS(1.8e11 folds)than those of PFOA and PFOS in WWTP A indicate a likely substitution of C8 PFAA by fluorotelomer-based PFAS in this *** trends(annual and seasonal)in per-capita mass load were observed for some PFAA,increasing for PFPeA,PFHxA,PFHpA,PFNA,and PFHxS,while decreasing for PFbS and PFOS in either ***,elevated levels of PFOS in October 2017 were observed at both WWTPs with the highest per capita mass load of up to 67 mg/day/*** some PFAS release trends,longer sampling periods would be required to achieve acceptable statistical power.
