Habitual sedentary time and stationary time are inversely related to aerobic fitness

A one metabolic-equivalent-of-task increase in peak aerobic fitness(peak MET)is associated with a clinically relevant improvement in survival risk and all-cause *** co-dependent impact of free-living physical behaviours on aerobic fitness are poorly *** purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of theoretically re-allocating time spent in physical behaviours on aerobic *** hypothesized that substituting sedentary time with any physical activity(at any intensity)would be associated with a predicted improvement in aerobic *** volume rate of oxygen uptake(VO_(2)peak)was assessed via indirect calorimetry during a progressive,maximal cycle ergometer protocol in 103 adults(52 females;[38±21]years;[25.0±3.8]kg/m^(2);VO_(2)peak:[35.4±11.5]ml⋅kg^(-1)⋅min^(-1)).Habitual sedentary time,standing time,light-(lPA),moderate-(MPA),and vigorous-physical activity(VPA)were assessed 24-h/day via thigh-worn inclinometry for up to one week(average:[6.3±0.9]days).Isotemporal substitution modelling examined the impact of replacing one physical behaviour with *** time(β=0.8,95%CI:[-1.3,-0.2])and standing time(β=0.9,95%CI:[-1.6,-0.2])were negatively associated with VO_(2)peak,whereas VPA was positively associated with relative VO_(2)peak(β=9.2,95%CI:[0.9,17.6]).Substituting 30-min/day of VPA with any other behaviour was associated with a 2.4–3.4 higher peak *** standing time was associated with a lower aerobic *** little as 10-min/day of VPA predicted a clinically relevant 0.8–1.1 peak MET ***,replacing any time with relatively small amounts of VPA is associated with improvements in aerobic fitness.

The effect of gas phase polydimethylsiloxane surface treatment of metallic aluminum particles： Surface characterization and flow behavior

Aluminum particles were exposed to gaseous polydimethylsiloxane （PDMS） to produce a hydropho- bic surface coating for enhanced flow and fluidity. Surface retention of the intact PDMS was confirmed through infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy was used to image cross-sections of the treated particles and energy dispersive spectroscopy element maps demon- strated the presence of a surface layer consisting of silicon and oxygen. Density measurements provided evidence for improvements in the Hausner ratio and Carr index of the PDMS-treated aluminum, indicating a reduction in inter-particulate cohesion through increased bulk density. Stability, compressibility, shear, aeration, and permeability of the particles were assessed by powder rheometer. The compressibility was reduced by approximately 32% following surface treatment, revealing a reduction in void space, while Mohr＇s circle analysis and shear testing determined that the extrapolated cohesion value was reduced by approximately 53% and the flow factor at 6 kPa was doubled. Aeration testing showed that the air velocity required to obtain a fluidized bed was on the order of 0.35 mm/s for the treated powder, whereas the raw powder could not be uniformly fluidized. PDMS may be a viable option for the large-scale treatment of aluminum powder for flow applications.

Perspectives:Gene expression in fisheries management

Functional genes and gene expression have been connected to physiological traits linked to effective production and broodstock selection in aquaculture, selective implications of commercial fish harvest, and adaptive changes reflected in non-commercial fish populations subject to human disturbance and climate change. Gene mapping using single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） to identify functional genes, gene expression （analogue microarrays and real-time PCR）, and digital sequencing technologies looking at RNA transcripts present new concepts and opportunities in support of effective and sustainable fisheries. Genomic tools have been rapidly growing in aquaculture research addressing aspects of fish health, toxicology, and early development. Genomic technologies linking effects in functional genes involved in growth, maturation and life history development have been tied to selection resulting from harvest practices. Incorporating new and ever-increasing knowledge of fish gehomes is opening a different perspective on local adaptation that will prove invaluable in wild fish conservation and management. Conservation of fish stocks is rapidly incorporating research on critical adaptive responses directed at the effects of human dis- turbance and climate change through gene expression studies. Genomic studies of fish populations can be generally grouped into three broad categories： l） evolutionary genomics and biodiversity; 2） adaptive physiological responses to a changing environment; and 3） adaptive behavioral genomics and life history diversity. We review current genomic research in fisheries focusing on those that use microarrays to explore differences in gene expression among phenotypes and within or across populations, information that is critically important to the conservation of fish and their relationship to humans [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 157-174, 2010].

Frailty is independently associated with increased hospitalisation days in patients on the liver transplant waitlist

AIMTo investigate the impact of physical frailty on risk of hospitalisation in cirrhotic patients on the liver transplant *** listed for liver transplantation at a single centre underwent frailty assessments using the Fried Frailty Index, consisting of grip strength, gait speed, exhaustion, weight loss, and physical activity. Clinical and biochemical data including MElD score as collected at the time of assessment. The primary outcome was number of hospitalised days per year; secondary outcomes included incidence of infection. Univariable and multivariable analysis was performed using negative binomial regression to associate baseline parameters including frailty with clinical outcomes and estimated incidence rate ratios (IRR).RESUlTSOf 587 cirrhotics, 64% were male, median age (interquartile range) was 60 (53-64) years and MElD score was 15 (12-18). Median Fried Frailty Index was 2 (1-3); 31.6% were classified as frail (fried frailty ≥ 3). During 12 mo of follow-up, 43% required at least 1 hospitalisation; 38% of which involved major infection. 107/184 (58%) frail and 142/399 (36%) non-frail patients were hospitalised at least once (P le analysis, Fried Frailty Index was associated with total hospitalisation days per year (IRR = 1.51, 95%CI: 1.28-1.77; P ≤ 0.001), which remained significant on multivariable analysis after adjustment for MElD, albumin, and gender (IRR for frailty of 1.21, 95%CI: 1.02-1.44; P = 0.03). Incidence of infection was not influenced by *** cirrhotics on the liver transplant waitlist, physical frailty is a significant predictor of hospitalisation and total hospitalised days per year, independent of liver disease severity.

Speleothem carbonates are precipitated continuously from inorganic carbon dissolved in seepage water infiltrating from the land surface,that reflects a mixture of atmospheric CO_2,respired soil carbon,and epikarst sources,each with distinct δ^(13)C *** aid in deconvolving these signatures,soil samples were collected above the Blue Spring cave system in Sparta,Tennessee,USA and subjected to a series of incubation experiments,in order to constrain the correlation between CO_2respiration rates and soil *** relationship is used to parameterize a simple mixing model which predicts the relationship between δ^(13)C and soil moisture in fluids infiltrating into the underlying cave system.

Synthesis and crystal structure of a neodymium coordination polymer with 2,6-anthraquinonedisulfonate

The coordination polymer, （Nd（H2O）5）2（2,6-AQDS）3.2H2O where 2,6-AQDS = 2,6- anthraquinonedisulfonate, has been synthesised via a hydrothermal route. Structurally, it consists of layers of monomeric Nd polyhedra which are linked by 2,6-AQDS anions forming a polymeric, three-dimensional network. Each Nd atom is nine coordinate, bonding to five water molecules and to four oxygen atoms from four 2,6-AODS anions which in turn pillar the layers by bridging two Nd atoms in one layer, and coordinating to a single Nd in the other.

Modeling regional landslide susceptibility using dynamic soil moisture profiles

A landslide susceptibility mapping study was performed using dynamic hillslope hydrology. The modified infinite slope stability model that directly includes vadose zone soil moisture(SM) was applied at Cleveland Corral, California, US and Krishnabhir, Dhading, Nepal. The variable infiltration capacity(VIC-3l) model simulated vadose zone soil moisture and the wetness index hydrologic model simulated groundwater(GW). The GW model predictions had a 75% NASH-Sutcliffe efficiency when compared to California's in-situ GW measurements. The model performed best during the wet season. Using predicted GW and VIC-3l vadose zone SM, the developed landslide susceptibility maps showed very good agreement with mapped landslides at each study region. Previous quasi-dynamic model predictions of Nepal's hazardous areas during extreme rainfall events were enhanced to improve the spatial characterization and provide the timing of hazardous conditions.

Background The pulsed introduction of dead plant and animal material into soils represents one of the primary mechanisms for returning organic carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)compounds to biogeochemical *** of animal carcasses provides a high C and N resource that stimulates indigenous environmental microbial communities and introduces non-indigenous,carcass-derived microbes to the ***,the dynamics of the coalesced microbial communities,and the relative contributions of environment-and carcass-derived microbes to C and N cycling are *** test whether environment-derived,carcass-derived,or the combined microbial communities exhibited a greater influence on C and N cycling,we conducted controlled laboratory experiments that combined carcass decomposition fluids and soils to simulate carcass decomposition *** selectively sterilized the decomposition fluid and/or soil to remove microbial communities and create different combinations of environment-and carcass-derived communities and incubated the treatments under three temperatures(10,20,and 30℃).Results Carcass-derived bacteria persisted in soils in our simulated decomposition scenarios,albeit at low *** communities had higher respiration rates at 10 and 30℃ compared to soil or carcass communities ***,at higher temperatures,mixed communities had reduced diversity,but higher respiration,suggesting functional *** communities treatments also provided evidence that carcass-associated microbes may be contributing to ammonification and denitrification,but that nitrification is still primarily carried out by native soil *** Our work yields insight into the dynamics of microbial communities that are coalescing during carcass decomposition,and how they contribute to recycling carcasses in terrestrial ecosystems.

Optimizing outcomes for patients with gastric cancer peritoneal carcinomatosis

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from gastric cancer has traditionally been considered a terminal progression of the disease and is associated with poor survival out-comes. Positive peritoneal cytology similarly worsens the survival of patients with gastric cancer and treatment options for these patients have been limited. Recent ad-vances in multimodality treatment regimens have led to innovative ways to care for and treat patients with this disease burden. One of these advances has been to use neoadjuvant therapy to try and convert patients with positivecytologyorlow-volume PC to negative cytolo-gy with no evidence of active peritoneal *** strategies include the use of neoadjuvant systemic chemotherapy alone,using neoadjuvant laparoscopic heated intraper itoneal chemotherapy(NlHIPEC)after systemic chemotherapy,or using neoadjuvant intra-peritoneal and systemic chemother apy(NIPS)in a bi-dir ectional manner. For patients with higher volume PC,cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intrape-ritoneal chemotherapy(HIPEC)have been mainstays of treatment. When used together, CRS and HIPEC can improve overall outcomes in properly selected patients,but overall survival outcomes remain unacceptably *** extent of peritoneal disease, commonly measured by the peritoneal carcinomatosis index (PCI), and the com-pleteness of cytor eduction,has been shown to greatly impact outcomes in patients undergoing CRS and *** uses of NlHIPEC and NlHIPEC plus NIPS have both been shown to decrease the PCI and thus increase the opportunity for complete cytoreduction.
