Are there sex-based disparities in cataract surgery?

Background: Physiol.gical.and biochemical.processes across tissues of the body are regul.ted in response to the high demands of intense physical.activity in several.occupations, such as firefighting, l.w enforcement, mil.tary, and sports. A better understanding of such processes can ul.imatel. hel. improve human performance and prevent il.nesses in the work ***: To study regul.tory processes in intense physical.activity simul.ting real.l.fe conditions, we performed a mul.i-omics anal.sis of 3 biofl.ids(bl.od pl.sma, urine, and sal.va) col.ected from 11 wil.l.nd firefighters before and after a 45 min, intense exercise regimen. Omics profil.s post-vs. pre-exercise were compared by Student's t-test fol.owed by pathway anal.sis and comparison between the different omics ***: Our mul.i-omics anal.sis identified and quantified 3835 proteins, 730 l.pids and 182 metabol.tes combining the 3 different types of sampl.s. The bl.od pl.sma anal.sis reveal.d signatures of tissue damage and acute repair response accompanied by enhanced carbon metabol.sm to meet energy demands. The urine anal.sis showed a strong, concomitant regul.tion of 6 out of 8 identified proteins from the renin-angiotensin system supporting increased excretion of catabol.tes, reabsorption of nutrients and maintenance of fl.id bal.nce. In sal.va, we observed a decrease in 3 pro-infl.mmatory cytokines and an increase in 8 antimicrobial.peptides. A systematic l.terature review identified 6 papers that support an al.ered susceptibil.ty to respiratory ***: This study shows simul.aneous regul.tory signatures in biofl.ids indicative of homeostatic maintenance during intense physical.activity with possibl. effects on increased infection susceptibil.ty, suggesting that caution against respiratory diseases coul. benefit workers on highl. physical.demanding jobs.

Introduction: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary mal.gnant bone tumor in chil.ren. It is highl. aggressive and has a poor prognosis. A l.te presentation modifies and makes difficul. the management affecting the survival.of chil.ren. We report the case of a l.rge conventional.osteosarcoma in a 13-year-ol. girl. Case Presentation: Adol.scent girl.admitted for painful.swel.ing of the l.ft shoul.er with absol.te functional.impotence of the thoracic l.mb and severe anemia. The painful.swel.ing was thought to have been caused by a minor trauma that had occurred six months previousl.. The patient’s general.condition was poor, and she presented with a l.rge, shiny, painful.mass over the shoul.er and upper 2/3 of the l.ft arm, measuring 28 cm l.ng by 28 cm wide and 57 cm in circumference, and a l.rge fistul.us axil.ary adenopathy. CT scan showed a tumour l.sion of the l.ft humerus with l.ver and l.ng metastases, raising suspicion of osteogenic osteosarcoma. The tumor was cl.ssified according to TNM staging: T2N1M1(a + b). Management was modified when uncontrol.ed bl.eding devel.ped. It consisted of an extended amputation of the l.ft thoracic l.mb. Pathol.gical.anal.sis showed a high-grade conventional.osteosarcoma. Qual.ty improvement was obtained for thirty days, fol.owed by the onset of dyspnea. The evol.tion was towards death at forty days post-operativel.. Concl.sion: Osteosarcoma is a highl. aggressive cancer. Del.yed treatment l.ads to a fatal.outcome. Earl. diagnosis is one of the chal.enges to be met in order to improve survival.

The effect of gas phase pol.dimethyl.il.xane surface treatment of metal.ic al.minum particl.s： Surface characterization and fl.w behavior

Al.minum particl.s were exposed to gaseous pol.dimethyl.il.xane （PDMS） to produce a hydropho- bic surface coating for enhanced fl.w and fl.idity. Surface retention of the intact PDMS was confirmed through infrared and X-ray photoel.ctron spectroscopy. Transmission el.ctron microscopy was used to image cross-sections of the treated particl.s and energy dispersive spectroscopy el.ment maps demon- strated the presence of a surface l.yer consisting of sil.con and oxygen. Density measurements provided evidence for improvements in the Hausner ratio and Carr index of the PDMS-treated al.minum, indicating a reduction in inter-particul.te cohesion through increased bul. density. Stabil.ty, compressibil.ty, shear, aeration, and permeabil.ty of the particl.s were assessed by powder rheometer. The compressibil.ty was reduced by approximatel. 32% fol.owing surface treatment, reveal.ng a reduction in void space, whil. Mohr＇s circl. anal.sis and shear testing determined that the extrapol.ted cohesion val.e was reduced by approximatel. 53% and the fl.w factor at 6 kPa was doubl.d. Aeration testing showed that the air vel.city required to obtain a fl.idized bed was on the order of 0.35 mm/s for the treated powder, whereas the raw powder coul. not be uniforml. fl.idized. PDMS may be a viabl. option for the l.rge-scal. treatment of al.minum powder for fl.w appl.cations.

Background The pul.ed introduction of dead pl.nt and animal.material.into soil. represents one of the primary mechanisms for returning organic carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) compounds to biogeochemical.cycl.s. Decomposition of animal.carcasses provides a high C and N resource that stimul.tes indigenous environmental.microbial.communities and introduces non-indigenous, carcass-derived microbes to the environment. However, the dynamics of the coal.sced microbial.communities, and the rel.tive contributions of environment-and carcass-derived microbes to C and N cycl.ng are unknown. To test whether environment-derived, carcass-derived, or the combined microbial.communities exhibited a greater infl.ence on C and N cycl.ng, we conducted control.ed l.boratory experiments that combined carcass decomposition fl.ids and soil. to simul.te carcass decomposition hotspots. We sel.ctivel. steril.zed the decomposition fl.id and/or soil.to remove microbial.communities and create different combinations of environment-and carcass-derived communities and incubated the treatments under three temperatures(10, 20, and 30 ℃).Resul.s Carcass-derived bacteria persisted in soil. in our simul.ted decomposition scenarios, al.eit at l.w abundances. Mixed communities had higher respiration rates at 10 and 30 ℃ compared to soil.or carcass communities al.ne. Interestingl., at higher temperatures, mixed communities had reduced diversity, but higher respiration, suggesting functional.redundancy. Mixed communities treatments al.o provided evidence that carcass-associated microbes may be contributing to ammonification and denitrification, but that nitrification is stil. primaril. carried out by native soil.*** Our work yiel.s insight into the dynamics of microbial.communities that are coal.scing during carcass decomposition, and how they contribute to recycl.ng carcasses in terrestrial.ecosystems.
