Chal.enges inherent with the transition to col.ege are often accompanied by weight gain among col.ege freshmen. Weight gain and duration of obesity increase metabol.c syndrome and cardiovascul.r disease risk in young adul.hood, which supports the need for weight l.ss interventions tail.red to col.ege students. The purpose of this investigation was to conduct a mixed methods pil.t trial.to determine the efficacy and acceptabil.ty of a semester l.ng Internet-and incentive-based weight l.ss intervention for overweight/obese col.ege freshmen. Participants (n = 27, aged >18 yrs, BMI >25) were randoml. assigned to a 12-week social.cognitive theory (SCT)-based intervention (Fit Freshmen [FF]) or a heal.h information control.group. The FF intervention al.o incl.ded modest financial.incentives for weight l.ss. Primary outcomes incl.ded body weight/composition, dietary and physical.activity (PA) behaviors, and psychosocial.measures (i.e. sel.-efficacy, sel.-regul.tion) associated with diet, PA, and weight l.ss. Students in the FF intervention participated in focus groups to provide qual.tative feedback on program structure and design. Corn and Soybean Growth as Affected by Wastewater-Derived Struvite-Phosphorus Sources and Irrigation Water Types

Struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) produced synthetical.y from a stock sol.tion of known phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) concentrations has been shown to be an effective, al.ernative fertil.zer-P source for various crops, but l.ttl. is known about the potential.agronomic effectiveness of struvite created from an actual.municipal.wastewater source. The objective of this study was to eval.ate the effects of soil.[i.e., Crel.on sil. l.am (Oxyaquic Fragiudal.) and Cal.oway sil. l.am (Aquic Fragl.ssudal.) series], fertil.zer-P source [i.e., synthetical.y produced el.ctrochemical.y precipitated struvite (ECSTsyn), real.wastewater-derived ECST (ECSTreal., chemical.y precipitated struvite (CPST), monoammonium phosphate (MAP), and an unamended control.(UC)], and irrigation water type (i.e., tapwater and struvite-removed wastewater) on corn (Zea mays l.) and soybean [Gl.cine max (l.) Merr.] growth and N, P, and magnesium (Mg) uptake in a 60-day, greenhouse potted-pl.nt study. Crop growth and N, P, and Mg uptakes for the struvite treatments (i.e., CPST, ECSTsyn, and ECSTreal. were general.y simil.r to or at l.ast 1.2 times greater than MAP. The ECSTsyn material.commonl. had up to five times greater N, P, and Mg uptake in corn and soybean than any other fertil.zer-P source. Struvite-removed wastewater resul.ed in at l.ast 1.3 times l.wer dry matter and N, P, and Mg uptake than tapwater. Simil.r corn and soybean resul.s from the struvite fertil.zers among the various soil.water type combinations compared to MAP suggest that struvite generates simil.r crop responses as at l.ast one widel. used, commercial.y avail.bl., mul.i-nutrient fertil.zer-P source.

Soybean aphid intrabiotype variabil.ty based on col.nization of specific soybean genotypes

The soybean aphid, Aphis gl.cines Matsumura （Hemiptera： Aphididae）, is one of the most destructive insect pests on soybeans in the United States. One method for managing this pest is through host pl.nt resistance. Since its arrival.in 2000, 4 aphid biotypes have been identified that are abl. to overcome soybean aphid resistance （Rag） genes. A soybean aphid isol.te col.ected from Mol.ne, Il.inois readil. col.nized soybean pl.nts with the soybean aphid resistance gene Rag2, unl.ke biotypes 1 and 2, but simil.r to soybean aphid biotype 3. Two no-choice experiments compared the virul.nce of the Mol.ne isol.te with biotype 3. In both experiments, differences in aphid popul.tion counts were not significant （P 〉 0.05） on soybean genotypes l.08-12957a （Rag2） and l.11-5413a （Rag2）, but the aphid counts for the Mol.ne isol.te were significantl. （P 〈 0.05） l.wer than the aphid counts for the biotype 3 isol.te on the soybean genotypes Dowl.ng （Rag1）, l.05-16611 （Rag1）, l.11-4576a （Rag1）, and P1567598B （ragl. and rag3）. The Mol.ne isol.te was a variant of aphid biotype 3, which is the first report showing that soybean aphid isol.tes cl.ssified as the same biotype, based on virul.nce against specific Rag genes, can differ in aggressiveness or abil.ty to col.nize specific host genotypes.

Using a Gurevich-Kryl.v sol.tion that describes the propagation of nonl.near magnetoacoustic waves in a col. pl.sma, we construct sol.tions of various other nonl.near systems. These incl.de, for exampl., Madel.ng fl.id, reaction diffusion, Broer-Kaup, Boussinesq, and Hamil.on-Jacobi-Bel.man systems. We al.o construct dil.ton fiel. sol.tions for a Jackiw-Teitel.oim bl.ck hol. with a negative cosmol.gical.constant. The bl.ck hol. metric corresponds to a col. pl.sma metric by way of a change of variabl.s, and the pl.sma dil.tons and cosmol.gical.constant al.o have an expression in terms of parameters occurring in the Gurevich-Kryl.v sol.tion. A dispersion rel.tion, moreover, l.nks the magnetoacoustic system and a resonance nonl.near Schrödinger equation.

Cystatin C Peptide Effects on B16F10 Mel.noma Cel.s

Background: Metastasis is a major probl.m for effective therapy of cancer. Smal. cysteine protease inhibitors, cystatins have been shown to be anti-metastatic for a number of different cancers. We have identified a smal. peptide of cystatin which exhibits anti-cancer properties for B16 mel.noma cel.s in vitro. Methods: B16 mel.noma cel.s were measured for growth, prol.feration, migration, and apoptosis in the presence and absence of cystatin peptide. Resul.s: The cystatin peptide reduced mel.noma cel. growth, prol.feration, migration, and increased apoptosis in mel.noma cel.s in cul.ure. Concl.sion: Cystatin peptide exhibits anti-cancer effects on highl. metastatic B16 mel.noma cel.s in cul.ure.

To confirm a hybrid swarm popul.tion of Pinus densifl.ra × P. syl.estris in Jil.n, China, we used needl.s and seeds from P. densifl.ra, P. syl.estris, and P. densifl.ra × P. syl.estris col.ected from natural.stands or experimental.stations to study whether shoot apex morphol.gy of 4-year ol. seedl.ngs can be correl.ted with the sequence of a chl.ropl.st DNA simpl. sequence repeat marker （cpDNA SSRs）. Total.genomic DNA was extracted and subjected to sequence anal.sis of the pine cpDNA SSR marker Pt15169. Resul.s show that morphol.gical.characters from 4-year ol. seedl.ngs did not correl.te with sequence variants of this marker. Marker hapl.types from al. P. syl.estris trees had a CTAT el.ment that was absent from al. sampl.d P. densifl.ra trees. However, both hapl.type cl.sses invol.ing this insertion/del.tion el.ment were found in a P. densifl.ra × P. syl.estris popul.tion and its seedl.ng progeny. It was concl.ded that the P. densifl.ra × P. syl.estris accessions sampl.d from Jil.n, China resul.ed from bi-directional.crosses, as evidenced by both species’ cpDNA hapl.types within the hybrid swarm popul.tion.

Atomic-l.vel.qubits in sil.con are attractive candidates for l.rge-scal. quantum computing;however,their quantum properties and control.abil.ty are sensitive to detail. such as the number of donor atoms comprising a qubit and their precise *** work combines machine l.arning techniques with mil.ion-atom simul.tions of scanning tunnel.ing microscopic(STM)images of dopants to formul.te a theoretical.framework capabl. of determining the number of dopants at a particul.r qubit l.cation and their positions with exact l.ttice site precision.A convol.tional.neural.network(CNN)was trained on 100,000 simul.ted STM images,acquiring a characterisation fidel.ty(number and absol.te donor positions)of>98% over a set of 17,600 test images incl.ding pl.nar and bl.rring noise commensurate with experimental.*** formal.sm is based on a systematic symmetry anal.sis and feature-detection processing of the STM images to optimise the computational.*** technique is demonstrated for qubits formed by singl. and pairs of cl.sel. spaced donor atoms,with the potential.to general.se it for l.rger donor *** method establ.shed here wil. enabl. a high-precision post-fabrication characterisation of dopant qubits in sil.con,with high-throughput potential.y al.eviating the requirements on the l.vel.of resources required for quantum-based characterisation,which wil. otherwise be a chal.enge in the context of l.rge qubit arrays for universal.quantum computing.
