Pre-treatment platelet counts as a prognostic and predictive factor in stage Ⅱ and Ⅲ rectal adenocarcinoma

AIM To investigate if pre-treatment platelet counts could provide prognostic information in patients with rectal adenocarcinoma that received neo-adjuvant treatment. METHODS Platelet number on diagnosis of stage II and III rectal cancer was evaluated in 51 patients receiving neoadjuvant treatment and for whom there were complete follow-up data on progression and survival, as well as pathologic outcome at the time of surgery. Pathologic responses on the surgical specimen of patients with lower platelet counts(150-300 × 10~9/l) were compared with these of patients with higher platelet counts(> 300 × 10~9/l) by the χ~2 test. Overall and progression free survival Kaplan-Meier curves of the two groups were constructed and compared with the log-Rank *** A significant difference was present between the two groups in regards to pathologic response with patients with lower platelet counts being more likely to exhibit a good or complete response to neo-adjuvant treatment than patients with higher platelet counts(P = 0.015). Among other factors evaluated, there was also a significant difference between the carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) at presentation of patients that exhibited a good or complete response and those that had no response or a minimal to moderate response. Patients with a good or complete response were more likely to present with a CEA of less than 5 μg/l(P = 0.00066). There was no significant difference in overall and progression free survival between the two platelet count groups(log-Rank tests P = 0.42 and P = 0.35, respectively).CONClUSION In this retrospective analysis of stage II and III rectal cancer patients, platelet counts at the time of diagnosis had prognostic value for neo-adjuvant treatment pathologic response. Pre-treatment CEA also held prognostic value in regards to treatment effect.

leveraging core capabilities and environmental dynamism for food traceability and firm performance in a food supply chain: A moderated mediation model

This paper develops a moderated mediation model in which the interactive effects of food traceability and environmental dynamism on firm performance are mediated by the core capabilities(operating capabilities and marketing capabilities)in food supply chain context, by invoking the indirect view of organizational learning theory. Our hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression and bootstrapping methods with a sample of 216 food manufacturing firms in China, and a survey-based, two-informant design was used to collect data. The results revealed that operating and marketing capabilities fully mediate the food traceability-performance link. In addition, environmental dynamism positively moderates the food traceability-core capabilities link. Moreover, it is found that operating and marketing capabilities transform the interactive impacts of environmental dynamism and food traceability into firm performance. Our study offers a fine-grained picture of the essential food traceability-performance link by revealing for the first time that there is an interactive impacts of food traceability and environmental dynamism on firm performance via core capabilities.

The development of fully solution-processed,biodegradable piezoelectrics is a critical step in the development of green electronics towards the worldwide reduction of harmful electronic ***,recent printing processes for piezoelectrics are hindered by the high sintering temperatures required for conventional perovskite fabrication ***,a process was developed to manufacture lead-free printed piezoelectric devices at low temperatures to enable integration with eco-friendly substrates and electrodes.A printable ink was developed for screen printing potassium niobate(KNbO3)piezoelectric layers in microns of thickness at a maximum processing temperature of 120℃ with high *** parallel plate capacitor and cantilever devices were designed and manufactured to assess the quality of this ink and evaluate its physical,dielectric,and piezoelectric characteristics;including a comparison of behaviour between conventional silicon and biodegradable paper *** printed layers were 10.7–11.2μm thick,with acceptable surface roughness values in the range of 0.4-1.1μ*** relative permittivity of the piezoelectric layer was *** poling parameters were optimised for the piezoelectric response,with an average longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient for samples printed on paper substrates measured as d33,eff,paper=13.57±2.84 pC/N;the largest measured value was 18.37 pC/N on paper *** approach to printable biodegradable piezoelectrics opens the way forward for fully solution-processed green piezoelectric devices.

Geotechnical considerations for concurrent pillar recovery in close-distance multiple seams

Room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery has historically been associated with more than 25% of all ground fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United *** risk of ground falls during pillar recovery increases in multiple-seam mining *** hazards associated with pillar recovery in multiple-seam mining include roof cutters, roof falls, rib rolls, coal outbursts, and floor *** pillar recovery is planned in multiple seams, it is critical to properly design the mining sequence and panel layout to minimize potential seam *** paper addresses geotechnical considerations for concurrent pillar recovery in two coal seams with 21 m of interburden under about 305 m of depth of *** study finds that, for interburden thickness of 21 m, the multiple-seam mining influence zone in the lower seam is directly under the barrier pillar within about 30 m from the gob edge of the upper *** peak stress in the interburden transfers down at an angle of approximately 20°away from the gob, and the entries and crosscuts in the influence zone are subjected to elevated stress during development and *** study also suggests that, for full pillar recovery in close-distance multiple-seam scenarios,it is optimal to superimpose the gobs in both seams, but it is not necessary to superimpose the *** the entries and/or crosscuts in the lower seam are developed outside the gob line of the upper seam,additional roof and rib support needs to be considered to account for the elevated stress in the multiple-seam influence zone.

A recent study published in Cell by the Millay lab reports on an elegant strategy to expand the repertoire of lentiviral(lV)vectors from being the main delivery tool for ex vivo gene therapy to an in vivo applicable viral vector that specifically transduces skeletal muscle.1 This very significant advance may result in novel therapeutics for patients suffering from various skeletal muscle diseases.

In a recent Cell article,McAuley,Kohn et *** proof-of-principle of a promising gene therapy(GT)approach to correct the underlying genetic defect responsible for CD3δ-deficient severe combined immunodeficiency(SCID)using a CRISPR-Cas9-derived adenine-base-editor(ABE).1 This ground-breaking and important study could impact future GTs for monogenic diseases by providing novel tailored therapeutic options(Fig.1).

Shock fragmentation model for gravitational collapse

A cloud of gas collapsing under gravity will fragment. We present a new theory for this process, in which layers of shocked gas fragment due to their gravitational instability. Our model explains why angular momentum does not inhibit the collapse process. The theory predicts that the fragmentation process produces objects which are significantly smaller than most stars, implying that accretion onto the fragments plays an essential role in determining the initial masses of stars. This prediction is also consistent with the hypothesis that planets can be produced by gravitational collapse.

Tumor metastases present an often difficult to treat therapeutic challenge for cancer patients and their *** recent paper by the Kaplan group(Kaczanowska et al.)exploited the natural capacity of monocytes or a subset of monocytes to migrate to tumor sites and pre-metastatic niches to deliver Il-12 in a novel anticancer approach designed to stimulate local immune responses.1 This raises the possibility to simultaneously fight cancer on at least two critical fronts,(1)elimination of the primary tumor and(2)inhibition of newly developing pre-metastatic lesions.
