Background Pediatric post coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)condition(PPCC)is a heterogeneous syndrome,which can significantly affect the daily lives of *** study aimed to identify clinically meaningful phenotypes in children with PPCC,to better characterize and treat this *** Participants were children with physician-diagnosed PPCC,referred to the academic hospital Amsterdam UmC in the Netherlands between November 2021 and march *** factors and information on post-COVID symptoms,comorbidities,and impact on daily life were *** clusters were identified using an unsupervised and unbiased approach for mixed data *** Analysis of 111 patients(aged 3–18 years)revealed three distinct clusters within *** 1(n=62,median age=15 years)predominantly consisted of girls(74.2%).These patients suffered relatively more from exercise intolerance,dyspnea,and smell *** 2(n=33,median age=13 years)contained patients with an even gender distribution(51.5%girls).They suffered from relatively more sleep problems,memory loss,gastrointestinal symptoms,and *** 3(n=16,median age=11 years)had a higher proportion of boys(75.0%),suffered relatively more from fever,had significantly fewer symptoms(median of 5 symptoms compared to 8 and 10 for clusters 1 and 2 respectively),and experienced a lower impact on daily *** This study identified three distinct clinical PPCC phenotypes,with variations in sex,age,symptom patterns,and impact on daily *** findings highlight the need for further research to understand the potentially diverse underlying mechanisms contributing to post-COVID symptoms in children.

Dracunculiasis eradication-Finishing the job before surprises arise

Dracunculiasis(Guinea worm disease) is a preventable waterborne parasitic disease that affects the poorest people living in remote rural areas in sub-Saharan African countries,who do not have access to safe drinking *** Guinea Worm Eradication Program,a 25-year old campaign to rid the world of Guinea Worm disease has now reached its final stage accelerating to zero cases in all endemic *** the 19th and 20th centuries,dracunculiasis was common in much of Southern Asia and the African *** overall number of cases has been reduced tremendously by≥99%,from the 3.32 million cases estimated to have occurred in 1986 in Africa to only I 797 cases reported in 2010 reported in only five countries(Sudan,mali,Ethiopia,Chad and Ghana) and Asia free of the *** achievement is unique in its kind - the only previously eradicated disease is smallpox,a viral infection for which vaccination was possible - and it has been achieved through primary community-based prevention and health education *** efforts need to be taken in two countries,South Sudan(comprising 94%or I 698 out of 1 797 of the cases reported world-wide in 2010) and mali because of frequent movements of nomads in a vast area inside and outside mali’s *** factors favourable to dracunculiasis eradication are available including adequate financial resources,community and political support and high levels of *** there is no reason that this disabling parasitic disease cannot be eradicated soon before surprises arise such as new civil conflicts in currently endemic countries.

Landscape spatial configuration is a key driver of wild bee demographics

The majority of studies investigating the effects of landscape composition and configuration on bee populations have been conducted in regions of intensive agricultural production, ignoring regions which are dominated by seminatural habitats, such as the islands of the Aegean Archipelago. In addition, research so far has focused on the landscape impacts on bees sampled in cropped fields while the landscape effects on bees inhabiting seminatural habitats are understudied. Here, we investigate the impact of the landscape on wild bee assemblages in 66 phryganic （low scrubland） communities on 8 Aegean islands. We computed landscape metrics （total area and total perimete^area ratio） in 4 concentric circles （250, 500, 750, and 1000 m） around the center of each bee sampling site including 3 habitat groups （namely phrygana, cultivated land, and natural forests）. We further measured the local flower cover in 25 quadrats distributed randomly at the center of each sampling site. We found that the landscape scale is more important than the local scale in shaping abundance and species richness of bees. Furthermore, habitat configuration was more important than the total area of habitats, probably because it affects bees＇ movement across the landscape. Phrygana and natural forests had a positive effect on bee demographics, while cultivated land had a negative effect. This demonstrates that phryganic specialists drive bee assemblages in these seminatural landscapes. This finding, together with the shown importance of landscape scale, should be considered for the management of wild bees with special emphasis placed on the spatial configuration of seminatural habitats.

Self-assembled formation of long, thin, and uncoalesced GaN nanowires on crystalline TiN films

We investigate in detail the self-assembled nucleation and growth of vertically oriented GaN nanowires by molecular beam epitaxy on crystalline TiN films. We demonstrate that this type of substrate allows for the growth of long and thin GaN nanowires that do not suffer from coalescence, a problem common to the growth on Si and other substrates. Only beyond a certain nanowire length that depends on the nanowire density and exceeds here 1.5 bun, coalescence takes place by bundling, i.e. the same process as on Si. By analyzing the nearest neighbor distance distribution, we identify the diffusion-induced repulsion of neighboring nanowires as the main mechanism limiting nanowire density during nucleation on TiN. Since on Si the final density is determined by shadowing of the impinging molecular beams by existing nanowires, it is the difference in adatom surface diffusion that enables the formation of nanowire ensembles with reduced density on TiN. These nanowire ensembles combine properties that make them a promising basis for the growth of core-shell heterostructures.

Worldwide practice in gastric cancer surgery

AIm: To evaluate the current status of gastric cancer surgery ***: An international cross-sectional survey on gastric cancer surgery was performed amongst international upper gastro-intestinal surgeons. All surgical members of the International Gastric Cancer Association were invited by e-mail to participate. An English web-based survey had to be filled in with regard to their surgical preferences. Questions asked included hospital volume, the use of neoadjuvant treatment, preferred surgical approach, extent of the lymphadenectomy and preferred anastomotic technique. The invitations were sent in September 2013 and the survey was closed in January ***: The corresponding specific response rate was 227/615(37%). The majority of respondents: originated from Asia( 5 4 %), performed > 2 1 gastrectomies per year(79%) and used neoadjuvant chemotherapy(73%). An open surgical procedure was performed by the majority of surgeons for distal gastrectomy for advanced cancer(91%) and total gastrectomy for both early and advanced cancer(52% and 94%). A minimally invasive procedure was preferred for distal gastrectomy for early cancer(65%). In Asia surgeons preferred a minimally invasive procedure for total gastrectomy for early cancer also(63%). A D1+ lymphadenectomy was preferred in early gastric cancer(52% for distal, 54% for total gastrectomy) and a D 2 lymphadenectomy was preferred in advanced gastric cancer(93% for distal, 92% for total gastrectomy) CONCLUSION: Surgical preferences for gastric cancer surgery vary between surgeons worldwide. Although the majority of surgeons use neoadjuvant chemotherapy, minimally invasive techniques are still not widely adapted.

Postoperative complications and weight loss following jejunostomy tube feeding after total gastrectomy for advanced adenocarcinomas

Objective： Patients undergoing total gastrectomy for cancer are at risk of malnourishment. The aim of this self- controlled study was to examine the effect of jejunostomy tube feeding （JTF） and other factors on postoperative weight and the incidence of jejunostomy-related complications in patients undergoing total gastrectomy for cancer. methods： All consecutive patients who underwent total gastrectomy for gastric cancer with jejunostomy plaeement were included from a prospective single-center database （2003-2014）. Jejunostomy-related complications and postoperative weight changes were evaluated up to 12 months after surgery. multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with weight loss 12 months after gastreetomy. Results： Of 113 patients operated in the study period, 65 received JTF after total gastrectomy for a median duration of 18 d [interquartile range （IQR）, 10-55 d]. Jejunostomy-related complieations occurred in 11 （17%） patients, including skin leakage （n=3） and peritoneal leakage （n=2）, luxation （n=3）, occlusion （n=2）, infection （n=l） and torsion （n=l）. In 2 （3%） patients, a reoperation was needed due to jejtmostomy-related complications. The mean preoperative weight of patients was 71.8 kg （100%）, and remained stable during JTF （73.9 kg, 103%, P=0.331）. After JTF was stopped, the mean weight of patients decreased to 64.9 kg （90%） at 12 months after surgery （P〈0.001）. A high preoperative body mass index （BmI）（〉_25 kg/m2） was associated with high postoperative weight loss compared to patients with a low BmI （〈25 kg/m2）（16.3% vs. 8.6%, P=0.016）. Conclusions： JTF can prevent weight loss in the early postoperative phase. However, this is at the prize of possible complications. As weight loss in the long term is not prevented, routine JTF should be re-evaluated and balanced against the selected use in preoperatively malnourished patients. Distribution,structure and biosynthetic gene families of(1,3;1,4)-β-glucan in Sorghum bicolor

In cereals, the presence of soluble polysaccharides including（1,3;1,4）-b-glucan has downstream implications for human health, animal feed and biofuel applications. Sorghum bicolor（L.） moench is a versatile crop, but there are limited reports regarding the content of such soluble ***, the amount of（1,3;1,4）-b-glucan present in sorghum tissues was measured using a megazyme assay. Very low amounts were present in the grain, ranging from 0.16%–0.27%（w/w）, while there was a greater quantity in vegetative tissues at 0.12–1.71%（w/w）. The fine structure of（1,3;1,4）-b-glucan, as denoted by the ratio of cellotriosyl and cellotetraosyl residues,was assessed by high performance liquid chromatography（HPLC） and ranged from 2.6–3：1 in the grain, while ratios in vegetative tissues were lower at 2.1–2.6：1. The distribution of（1,3;1,4）-b-glucan was examined using a specific antibody and observed with fl uorescence and transmission electron microscopy. micrographs showed a variable distribution of（1,3;1,4）-b-glucan in fl uenced by temporal and spatial factors. The sorghum orthologs of genes implicated in the synthesis of（1,3;1,4）-b-glucan in other cereals, such as the Cellulose synthase-like（Csl） F and H gene families were de *** pro filing of these genes across sorghum tissues was carried out using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, indicating that, as in other cereals, Csl F6 transcripts dominated.

Sustainable agricultural mechanization in Timor-Leste:status,challenges and further action

Despite many efforts over two decades of independence,Timor-Leste's cereal production and agricultural productivity have decreased dramatically,reflected by high food insecurity and rural *** paper analyses the country's current agricultural mechanization efforts to guide future actions that aim to stimulate growth through sustainable *** combined information from scientific publications,governmental and international cooperation communications,and data collected during field missions to assess the *** study provides recommendations to reverse a failed tractorization campaign and presents a comprehensive overview of a strategy,in alignment with a proposed and renewed national agricultural mechanization policy,that would enable the modernization and sustainable intensification of current food production systems in a nutrition-sensitive,climate-smart,economically viable,and gender-inclusive *** recommendations suggest a focus on scale-appropriate solutions that respond to upland smallholder farmers'capacities and consider good rural transport options,with the first steps to redirect the situation already taken through a technical cooperation program between FAO and the ministry of *** this,a reform of the current government mechanization hire schemes is needed:integrated approaches,as found from business model analyses and training exercises during field missions,are needed,that entail context-specific solutions for targeted rural communities,with special attention given to participatory extension,inclusive co-validation of technologies,and private sector-led business model development around mechanization service ***,the authors hope the presented way forward can serve as a roadmap for smallholder farmers and developing nations in similar conditions elsewhere in the world.
