Seismic loss assessment of RC high-rise buildings designed according to Eurocode 8

A probabilistic seismic loss assessment of RC high-rise(RCHR)buildings designed according to Eurocode 8 and located in the Southern Euro-Mediterranean zone is presented *** loss assessment methodology is based on a comprehensive simulation approach which takes into account ground motion(GM)uncertainty,and the random effects in seismic demand,as well as in predicting the damage states(DSs).The methodology is implemented on three RCHR buildings of 20-story,30-story and 40-story with a core wall structural *** loss functions described by a cumulative lognormal probability distribution are obtained for two intensity levels for a large set of simulations(NLTHAs)based on 60 GM records with a wide range of magnitude(M),distance to source(R)and different site soil conditions(SS).The losses expressed in percent of building replacement cost for RCHR buildings are *** the estimation of losses,both structural(S)and nonstructural(NS)damage for four DSs are *** effect of different GM characteristics(M,R and SS)on the obtained losses are ***,the estimated performance of the RCHR buildings are checked to ensure that they fulfill limit state requirements according to Eurocode 8.

PolyADP ribose polymerase inhibitors(PARPi)have transformed the treatment of ovarian *** in high-grade serous ovarian cancer(HGSOC),a disease characterized by homologous recombination deficiency(HRD),PARPi have had a rapid and profound impact on the disease course,as well as biologic and biomarker definitions of HGSOC,thereby creating a paradigm shift in the approach to *** this review,we discuss the role of PARPi in the maintenance treatment of HGSOC,its effect on platinum sensitivity,and cross-resistance between platinum and PARP inhibitors.

Interaction between Engineering Structures and Environment, Illustrated on the Examples of Bridges in Montenegro

The basic goal of this paper is to point out the importance of design shaping as well as the key parameter of the great interaction between the structure and natural environment. However, experiences confirm the fact that the most successful structures, the bridges also, have not got that attribute because of their grandiosity but per their great integration in the nature that is environment. Beside the basic function, that is the usage to man, their integrations in the environment greately enrich the ambience. The old stone bridges are mostly well integrated in the natural environment. In the period of large building, it did not take care of the parameters （the bridges of steel, concrete and prestressed concrete）, but great attention was paid to records referring to spans and complicated forms. The author thinks it is necessary to take care about integration of all building structures in the environment, especially bridges. As a good example of successful creation, simplicity of form, and especially good integration in the natural surroundings are three bridges from Montenegro, one of them is old stone bridge, others are reinforced-concrete and steel bridges.

Dietary Conjugated Linoleic Acids Arrest Cell Cycle Progression and Prevent Ovarian Cancer Xenografts Growth Suggesting a Trans-10 Cis-12 Isoform Specific Activity

Therapies for treating ovarian cancer (OvCa) successfully are largely inadequate. Alternative therapies and diet(s) with preventive potential to debilitated onset, and reduced OvCa tumor burden in situ, have not been systematically studied. Preventive role of conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) has been reported in many other cancers. We report the first systematic in vitro and in vivo study modeling potential preventive mechanism(s) of CLA, an octadecadienolic fatty acid in clear cell OvCa cell line TOV-21G. We demonstrate that a dose and time-dependent down-regulation of cyclin E and A proteins (p 0.05) by CLA (t10,c12) was concomitant with cell cycle arrest of TOV-21G cell lines in S phase. To understand the molecular mechanism underlying CLA (t10,c12) induced S phase arrest, levels of cell cycle regulatory proteins were determined by western blot analyses. Exposure to CLA (t10,c12) increased p21(CIP1/WAF1), and p27(KIP1) protein levels in a time and dose-dependent manner. Interestingly CLA (t10,c12) did not significantly affect protein levels of cyclin-dependent kinase (cdk) 2, and p53, however, hyperphosphorylated form of pRb (p 0.05) was abrogated. Exposure to CLA (c9,t11) indicated a modest increase in p21(CIP1/WAF1) and p27(KIP1) levels, but changes in cyclin A and E levels were statistically insignificant. These results indicate that CLA (t10,c12) mediated p27(KIP1) upregulation and inhibition of hyperphosphorylation of ppRb may be the possible mechanism for the S phase arrest in TOV-21G cell line. Our in vivo data showed that CLA reduced the progression of TOV-21G xenografts by >50%. Together our results provide evidence of CLA exerted preventive effect on OvCa cell and tumor growth. Tumor growth arrest may be resultant from CLA (t10,c12) mediated modulation of cell cycle arrest.
