The Impact of Leachate on the Quality of Surface and Groundwater and Proposal of Measures for Pollution Remediation

Direct discharge of municipal and industrial waste waters and leachate (originating from the illegal landfills) into recipients without prior purification is unfortunately very common practice in the region of northern Kosovo. In addition, irresponsible and incorrect selection of sites for industrial and municipal dumps, which are often located in vicinity or on actual river banks, contributes significantly to environmental pollution. Analysis of the leachate from such sites was done by direct sampling and by using TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leashing Procedures) method. Based on the analysis of physicochemical parameters of the filtrated water from the sites Zitkovac, Grabovac and Balaban and analysis of the samples of surface water and groundwater from the site Grabovac, possible steps for removal and reduction of the existing pollution were proposed. Potential permanent solution in form of purification of municipal and industrial waste waters as well as leachate from illegal landfills was suggested. The potential implementation of remediation with a unified system for water purification, by using Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR), which includes the process of stabilization/solidification of a residual sludge, would have as an end product a neutral powder material completely safe for the environment, suitable for a variety of applications.

Microbial transformations of toxic monomethylmercury(MMHg) and dissolved gaseous mercury(DGM) at the lower levels of the marine food web are not well understood, especially in oligotrophic and phosphorus-limited seas. To examine the effects of probable phosphorus limitation(~PP-limitation) on relations between mercury(Hg) fractions and microorganisms, we determined the total mercury(THg), total methylated mercury(MeHg), DGM, and microbiological and chemical parameters in the Central Adriatic Sea. Using statistical analysis, we assessed the potential microbial effects on Hg transformations and bioaccumulation. Only in the absence of ~PP-limitation conditions(^(NO–P)P-limitation) is MeHg significantly related to most chemical and microbial parameters, indicating metabolism-dependent Hg *** heterotrophic activity of low nucleic acid bacteria(abundant in oligotrophic regions)seems responsible for most of Hg methylation under ^(NO–P)P-limitation. Under these conditions,DGM is strongly related to microbial fractions and chlorophyll a, indicating biological DGM production, which is probably not metabolically induced, as most of these relations are also observed underPP-limitation. MMHg biomagnification was observed through an increased bioaccumulation factor from microseston to mesozooplankton. Our results indicate that Hgtransformations and uptake might be enhanced under ^(NO–P)P-limitation conditions, emphasizing their impact on the transfer of Hg to higher trophic levels.

Aberrant glycosylation of the anti-Thomsen-Friedenreich glycotope immunoglobulin G in gastric cancer patients

AIM: To study whether alterations in the glycosylation of immunoglobulin G (IgG) specific to the ThomsenFriedenreich glycotope (TF) have diagnostic and prognostic potential in gastric cancer. METHODS: Serum samples were obtained from patients with histologically verified gastric carcinoma (n = 89), healthy blood donors (n = 40), and patients with benign stomach diseases (n = 22). The lectin-enzymelinked immunosorbent assay-based glycoprofiling of TF-specific IgG (anti-TF IgG) was performed using synthetic TF-polyacrylamide conjugate as antigen, total IgG purified by affinity chromatography on protein G sepharose, and lectins of various sugar specificities: mannose-specific concanavalin A (ConA), fucose-specificAleuria aurantia lectin (AAL) and sialic acid-specific Sambucus nigra agglutinin (SNA). The sensitivity and specificity of the differences between cancer patients and controls were evaluated by receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Overall survival was analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Time-dependent ROC curve statistics were applied to determine cut-off values for survival analysis. All calculations and comparisons were performed using the GraphPad Prism 5 and SPSS 15.0 ***: The level of TF-specific IgG was significantly increased in cancer patients compared with non-cancer controls (P < 0.001). This increase was pronounced mostly in stage 1 of the disease. Cancer patients showed a higher level of ConA binding to antiTF-IgG (P < 0.05) and a very low level of SNA lectin binding (P = 0.0001). No appreciable stage-dependency of the binding of any lectin to anti-TF IgG was found. A strong positive correlation between the binding of AAL and SNA was found in all groups studied (r = 0.71-0.72; P < 0.0001). The changes in ConA reactivity were not related to those of the fucoseor sialic acid-specific lectin. Changes in the SNA binding index and the ConA/SNA binding ratio demonstrated good sensitivity and specificity for stomach cancer:

Reduction of Trihalomethanes Forming Potential by Adsorption of Natural Organic Matter on Ionic Exchange Resins

In a sanitation process of drinking water, carbon from the organic matter reacts with chlorine, forming by-products, among which are trihalomethanes (THM). These substances are carriers of mutagenic and can-cerogenic potential and hence should be removed in drinking water treatment. Since the natural organic mat-ters are precursors of THM formation, their removal from the water decreases the concentration of THMs. The THM forming potential is the most reliable indicator in evaluation of organic matter removal during drinking water treatment processes. The results have shown that the reaction producing THMs follows sec-ond order kinetics. The second order rate constant ranged from 0.024 M-1s-1 to 0.065 M-1s-1 at 22 °C and pH = 8.2 for 96 hours. The removal of 78.4% of natural organic matter, by adsorption on anionic exchange res-ins, resulted in the THM forming potential reduction by 63.1%. Various fractions of natural organic matter differ in their reactivity with chlorine, which is important when it comes to selection of the adsorption me-dium in the drinking water treatment processes.

武术项目在拉脱维亚共和国发展已有20余年,越来越受到拉脱维亚人民的欢迎。本人作为北京体育大学研习武术项目的留学生,肩负着为祖国的武术运动发展进行理论学术研究的责任。因此本人通过研究,分析全面调查了解武术项目在拉脱维亚共和国的开展现状,并得出可行性方案,使武术项目在拉脱维亚更好地普及和发展。拉脱维亚共和国成立于1991年,建国以来,拉脱维亚政府一直重视发展体育事业。本文通过查阅文献资料,发放问卷调查法,专家访谈法等对拉脱维亚共和国武术项目发展现状进行了调查,分析结果显示每年武术习练者数量逐年增加,拉脱维亚武术项目发展越来越好,同时,亟待解决的问题也不少。如,虽然武术俱乐部领导对武术项目的发展和教学较重视,可是拉脱维亚政府和相关部门对武术项目没支持。本文将着眼于拉脱维亚共和国目前武术项目发展现状及对策研究,并找出发展拉脱维亚武术运动的不足之处及障碍,同时借鉴参考世界各国武术项目发展经验,从而寻找符合于拉脱维亚国情的武术项目发展路径,进一步深化拉脱维亚共和国武术项目改革,推动拉脱维亚共和国武术项目在新世纪发展的同时,也对构建拉脱维亚共和国和谐社会有着重要的意义。

Do Circulating RSV-Genotypes Affect Established Biennial Epidemic Periodicity in Zagreb Region?

Objective: The biennial epidemic pattern of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) circulation in Croatia has been preserved and could not be related to climatic factors and the predominant RSV subtypes. The possibility that the circulation of different RSV genotypes affect the outbreak cycle in children in Croatia (Zagreb region) over a period of 3 consecutive years was explored in the paper. Methods: The study group consisted of inpatients, aged 0-10 years, who were hospi- talized with acute respiratory tract infections caused by RSV, in Zagreb, over the period from 1 January 2006 to 31 De- cember 2008. The virus was identified in the nasopharyngeal secretion using direct immunofluorescence method. The virus subtype and genotype was determined by real-time PCR and sequence analysis, respectively. Results: RSV infec- tions identified in 731 children. RSV subtype A caused 399 infections, and subtype B 332. Two subtype A genotypes (NA1 and GA5) and three subtype B genotypes (BA7, BA9 and BA10) were found. During persistent RSV biennial cycles namely four succeeding outbreaks, the new genotype from the previous smaller outbreak persevered into the up- coming larger outbreak. Conclusion: Our molecular-epidemiology study of RSV subtypes and genotypes during calen- dar months demonstrates that the biennial RSV cycle cannot be fully explained by the dynamic of the predominant cir- culating genotype of RSV. Other unknown factors account for the biennial cycle of RSV epidemics in Croatia.).

Immunoglobulin G(IgG)is the most abundant plasma glycoprotein and a prominent humoral immune *** composition affects the affinity of IgG to ligands and consequent immune *** modification of IgG N-glycosylation is considered to be one of the various mechanisms by which sex hormones modulate the immune *** the menstrual cycle is the central sex hormonerelated physiological process in most women of reproductive age,IgG N-glycosylation dynamics during the menstrual cycle have not yet been *** fill this gap,we profiled the plasma IgG Nglycans of 70 healthy premenopausal women at 12 time points during their menstrual cycles(every 7 days for 3 months)using hydrophilic interaction ultra-performance liquid chromatography(HILIC-UPLC).We observed cyclic periodic changes in the N-glycosylation of IgG in association with the menstrual cycle phase and sex hormone concentration in *** the integrated cohort level,the modeled average menstrual cycle effect on the abundance of IgG N-glycosylation traits was low for each trait,with the highest being 1.1%for agalactosylated ***,intrapersonal changes were relatively high in some cases;for example,the largest difference between the minimum and maximum values during the menstrual cycle was up to 21%for sialylated *** all measurements,the menstrual cycle phase could explain up to 0.72%of the variation in the abundance of a single IgG glycosylation trait of *** contrast,up to 99%of the variation in the abundance of digalactosylation could be attributed to interpersonal differences in IgG *** conclusion,the average extent of changes in the IgG N-glycopattern that occur during the menstrual cycle is small;thus,the IgG N-glycoprofiling of women in large sample-size studies can be performed regardless of menstrual cycle phase.
