A New Potentiometric Sensor for Determination of Pethidine hydrochloride in Ampoules and Urine

A simple, precise, rapid and low-cost potentiometric method for pethidine determination in pharmaceuticals and urine is proposed. A chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE) for pethidine hydrochloride (PDCl) based on pethidine-phosphotungstate (PD-PT) as ion-pair complex was prepared and fully character-ized in terms of composition, usable pH range, response time and temperature. The pethidine electrode showed Nernstain responses in the concentration range 2.1 × 10–6-1.0 × 10–2 M with a detection limit of 7.3 × 10-7 and usable within the pH range 3.5-6.6. This sensor exhibited a fast response time (about 5-8 s), good stability. The value (dE/dt) of the electrode was found to be 0.00071 V/?C, which indicates fairly high ther-mal stability. Selectivity coefficients determined by matched potential method (MPM) and separate solution method (SSM) showed high selectivity for PDCl with respect to a large number of inorganic cations, organic cations, sugars and some common drug excipients. The sensor could be used successfully in the estimation of PDCl in ampoules and in spiked urine samples.

Clinical Variants, Rates of Post-Operative Recurrence and Malignant Transformation of Sino-Nasal Inverted Papilloma

Background: Inverted Papilloma (IP) is the most common benign neoplasms arising from the mucosal lining of the of the Sino-Nasal tract with single or multifocal attachment sites. The high propensity to recur, local aggressive behavior and possibility of malignant transformation attract considerable interest. Objective: To assess the factors affecting Sino-nasal IP, malignant transformation rate, and post-operative recurrence rate. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out on all cases diagnosed as Sino-Nasal Papilloma between January 2010 and December 2020 at Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain. Data gathered from medical records were analyzed using SPSS. A total of 49 Sino-Nasal Papilloma cases were recorded of which 37 were IP. Factors affecting Sino-Nasal IPs are presented. Results: Sino-Nasal IP was recorded in 37 cases, composed of 28 males and 9 females with first presentation average age of 45.86 years. These involved 20 cases in the left side, 14 in the right side and 3 were bilateral. Recurrence in males and females was found to be 35.7% and 33%, respectively, with an average of 12.6 months. The symptoms include nasal blockage (97.3%), epistaxis and postnasal drip (13.5% each), headache (8.1%) and hyposmia and rhinorrhea (5.4%, each). The main recurrence was at stage T2 (60.5%), while in smokers (26.7%) and non-smokers (50%). Malignant transformation occurred in one patient only (2.6%). Conclusion: IP is the most common type of SNP with male predominance. The recurrence rate is high with an average of a year and the malignant transformation occurred in 2.6 % of the cases.

AIM:To share the results of a national screening program for amblyopia in school children in the north of ***:This is a prospective national screening study for *** program rolls first and second-grade children(6 to 7 years old) in the north of *** eye examination included:best-corrected visual acuity,cover-uncover test,and cycloplegic *** visual acuity was tested using an ETDRS visual acuity chart without ***,children were tested with full cycloplegic refraction when the test criteria were *** amblyopia was defined as a best-corrected visual acuity difference of 2 or more *** comparison,bilateral amblyopia was defined as a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or worse in the best ***:The prevalence of amblyopia for the total sample tested(n=17 203) was 2.78%(n=479).The most common cause of amblyopia was hypermetropia(64.45%),followed by previous ocular surgeries(15.1%),myopia(10.43%),strabismus(9.39%),and congenital cataract(0.63%).CONCLUSION:This is the first and only study,identifing modifiable risk factors in Jordanian children with *** their first couple of years of elementary education,many Jordanian children are affected by amblyopia and pass unnoticed.A more governmental effort is needed into screening programs to improve vision in the Jordanian population.
